Good old Lego builder Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 Hi all, A few years ago, when my son was born, I picked up all my old Lego at my parents home, and rebuild all my 'City' stuff from the early eighties. It were a lot of great sets and I even bought some new sets. So I have a nice complete village. It's all in bags and now, wainting for my son to play with it. (Just this weekend he build his first little car with an instruction, so at nearly 4 years of age he is on course to be a great builder! (Thank you Shell!!) However I was left with still a box full of Lego. Technic and other old stuff. So now and then I try to build something with that. 2 years ago I build a Scania L76 Towtruck which I quite liked. (It's still standing on a shelve) And then some other stuff that didn't survive. SO, after this long introduction: I'm now trying to build the DAF TurboTwin X1, from 1988 Dakar race, in Model Team scale 1:25. I'm building it mainly with my very old bricks, so I have limited myself (when it comes to shapes of bricks and techniques). For the first time however, I have ordered some parts on Bricklink, like fitting wheels, since I simply do not have them. I'm waiting for the wheels, so I took the, for me, unusual approach to build the body first. In the picture you can see where I am right know. Please keep in mind that I do not intend to buy a lot of bricks, so it is pretty robust, old school and studded. But I think it does look like the real thing. Tips or hints thus far??? Quote
Lakop Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 (edited) Welcome. Have a look at the topics around trucks. I think you need the wheels from set 9397, the logging truck. You can use some studded technic bricks to fit them on no problem. Happy building and hope to see the completed model soon. H Edited April 23, 2013 by Horace T Quote
Good old Lego builder Posted April 23, 2013 Author Posted April 23, 2013 Yeah, I that are the kind of wheels I have ordered. I have done some scaling with pics, and I think those almost match the right scale. (very very slightly too big.) Quote
AndyCW Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 There was a blue one of those on the forum not so long ago. It was much bigger and remote controlled, but it may provide some inspiration. BTW welcome to the forum and it looks like you have a well thought out project. v/r Andy Quote
Someonenamedjon Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 Welcome to EB! It looks really good! You should check out VFracingteam's! http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=73264 Quote
MarkusOSX Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 (edited) Hi and welcome to EB. VFracingteam made this some time ago. You´ll find his post here Greetz Markus Edited April 24, 2013 by MarkusOSX Quote
Good old Lego builder Posted April 24, 2013 Author Posted April 24, 2013 I have seen that one! It's mine's big older brother! Cool thing with the PF. I think my MOC will have the sole working function: steering. Quote
timslegos Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 I like your studded approach, it should look great. tim Quote
Good old Lego builder Posted April 25, 2013 Author Posted April 25, 2013 Thank you! It's a bit old school, but I like it. Today the wheels and some small parts arrived, so now i am goiing to build the chassis. Quote
legomuppet9 Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 I Love the old school effect nice work, now how complex will your chassis be Quote
Edwin Korstanje Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 (edited) Where is VFracing?:) I haved a lot off work the last weeks rm8 . Best Good old Lego builder, i like your studded old school version of the X1 and yes mine studless one is from 1987, but the only Turbo Twin that wins the Dakar race The Turbo twin X1 from you whas the fastest Dakar truck ever build. The other X1 from the Daf team crashed and lose a teammember and Daf pulls the complete team out off the race. The X1 whas faster than the Peugeot 405 from Ari Vatanen, he wins the race in 1988. Keep going your nice work. Edited April 26, 2013 by VFracingteam Quote
Rijkvv Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Great work, good old Lego builder! I like your good old classic approach here. I can't wait to see it with wheels added. Or the complete result for that matter. @VFracingteam: two corrections: the crashed truck was the X2, basically the same technique of the '87 truck, but with a body very similar to the X1. Vatanen didn't win the race in '88, his car got stolen and was only returned when it was too late to start the next stage. His teammate Kankkunen did win. Still one of the most famous and most impressive actions of rally history: (at 1:00 the actual action takes place) Quote
Good old Lego builder Posted April 25, 2013 Author Posted April 25, 2013 Thanks! Yeah, I remember from when I was young how fast the thing was. Recently saw the TurboTwin racing the 405 on Youtube. Amazing sight. I visited the DAF museum recently, so that inspired me. I intend to build the chassis 'realistic', so some sort of 'spaceframe' like the original. I don't have grey beams, so it will be black. And studded of course! By the way, I did read, VF Racing, that the X2 (crashed) was build the with the same types of engines as the TurboTwin II, so it was a bit slower. Well, as we say in dutch: we zien wel waar het schip strand! And while I typed that, someone was ahead of me! Watch that! That is one fast truck! Quote
Good old Lego builder Posted April 26, 2013 Author Posted April 26, 2013 That Kamaz is looks great! Of course, if DAF would not have withdrawn from competition, it would have picked up a lot more victories.... Quote
efferman Posted April 26, 2013 Posted April 26, 2013 (edited) Kamaz have won that race 11 times;) no wonder when nearly no manufacturer get in competition on the dakar rally against kamaz but anyway the trucks are great and fast and this model looks gorgeous Edited April 26, 2013 by efferman Quote
Good old Lego builder Posted April 28, 2013 Author Posted April 28, 2013 Well....... that went well. The wheels arrived and .... I'm not happy with the scale. Wheels are just a bit too big. So I'm gonna rebuild things and scale up a bit. I think it will be 13 studs wide, but I have redo my drawings first..... At least it keeps me busy! Quote
Good old Lego builder Posted April 29, 2013 Author Posted April 29, 2013 So, I have completed a new picture in the right scale (13 studs wide, amazig what a difference a few studs make), and I thought, ok, easy, let's build. But..... I'm gonna build it with classic technic bricks, and of course everything from back then is 'even'. (2, 4, 6, 8 etc studds). So has anybody experience in building 13 stud wide with classic bricks? Because i'm wondering how to build the steering for example. Or isn't this important at all? Just wondering. Quote
Edwin Korstanje Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 There are olso bricks and plates in 1 and 3 studs Quote
Good old Lego builder Posted May 1, 2013 Author Posted May 1, 2013 HAHAHA! You are correct VF Racingteam! I'm currently rebuilding everything, although I don't have much time unfortunately. Rescaling things with the wheels as a starting point makes the cabin 14 wide and the rest a few studs longer. I'll post some pics when that part is finished. Is it still Model Team scale? Quote
Good old Lego builder Posted May 3, 2013 Author Posted May 3, 2013 (edited) Spot the differences! The bodywork is roughly finished. 14 studs wide. Now the chassis. Edited May 3, 2013 by Good old Lego builder Quote
Someonenamedjon Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 Very nice changes! It makes it look much smoother! Quote
