Freekysch Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 I was wondering what is your favorite mid-range Lego Technic set, because i saw there are lots of topics about favorite flagships. I think one of the best mid-range sets is the 8265 (Front Loader) from 2009. I own it and it is superb, very nice detalis, nice functions and great looks. So, Technic addicts, what is your favorite mid-range Lego Technic set ? Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 The scrap handler is a good model from this year. I also like the backhoe loader from 2009. Quote
Technic Gearhead Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 It's funny - I was thinking about these sets this morning on the way to work. I like the 8070, 9396 and 9397 a lot. Of course the 8265 would be in the conversation as well. Quote
D3K Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 IMO the best looking (flat nosed at least) truck they ever made! Also, the functions are really innovative, and the build is great! Definitely the set I have that surprised me (in a positive way) the most! Quote

Hmm, disagree - looks well is right but the functions based on the LAs are not - i never understood why the 8265 is ranked so high.....playability is near zero if you do not want to get a typewriters cramp...8265 needs essentially motorization....but the standard way looks not very well and some existing full motorized MODs are quite expensive to build and far away from the out-of-box-model... IMHO this one is a much preferable model of a front-loader: The 8455 Backhoe is even a better model, it is a marvel concerning all criterias (Design, functions, realism, playability) My third one would this crane - full of functions (apart from a fake engine even more than the 8421 flagship), all very well done: These three are IMHO by far the best midrange models TLG has ever made... both of them beat the 8265 easily... but of course: just my 2 ct Edited April 12, 2013 by Kumbbl Quote

Kumbbl Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 i cant find the backhoe you are referring to. no wonder - there is no backhoe in 2009 Quote
Kumbbl Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 I think 9395 or 8069 are mine. for 8069 i would say more or less the same as for 8265: unplayable without motorization with one difference: whereas 8265 is at least somehow motorizable the 8069 isn't - at least not without disturbing the well done look...the problem is: LAs are IMHO completely unplayable without a motor...so: you can have fun building these (not motorized) LA-models, have fun looking at this models (a certain short time) but what what comes then? answer: dust and more dust... or breaking apart and using the parts... apart from that the 8069 is a well done set full of functions, agreed... andythenorth Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 8069 Backhoe Loader nicest model, more so because it wasn't expensive. Quote
Wiseman_2 Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 8109 and 8438 are probably my favorites in this range... 8109 packs some great functionality into probably one of the better looking Technic sets I've seen. The fact that there is no wasted space inside the model - at all - shows how well designed it is. As for 8438, the crane is also very well designed and looks great, but I actually prefer the B-model. There are not very many knuckle-boom crane trucks in Technic (I think 8258 is the only other one, unless someone knows better) and 8438's is a great example: Quote
Kronos Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Definitely 8069. That set brought me out of my dark ages. (That and 8070, but it's high-range.) Great playability, functionality, and a GREAT build. Quote

Alasdair Ryan Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 i cant find the backhoe you are referring to. no wonder - there is no backhoe in 2009 Opps....2011 was what I meant to say. Quote
Lost_In_Noise Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 8053 is an excellent model, and so is 8069. Quote
skylinedan Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 8053 for sure, 8265, 42006 , I think those are my favorites so far, I,m sure if I think about it for a bit, I can come up with some more, LOL. Dan Quote
MrNumbskull13 Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 I have flatbed truck, it is my biggest set but it is still quite middle range. Quote

Hmm, i would not rank 8053 as midrange: with near 1300 parts this is IMHO a real high range set... there were a lot of years with flagship models with about 1100 - 1400 parts... if you count 8053 as a mid gange then you can also count 8880 as mid range - and this would be quite nonsense, isn't it? But here is another excellent mid range - the fantastic tractor 8284: another one is the 8862 - both the A and the B model (very well done combine harvester): Quote
shadowhearth Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 IMO the best looking (flat nosed at least) truck they ever made! Also, the functions are really innovative, and the build is great! Definitely the set I have that surprised me (in a positive way) the most! I am with you on this. This is not just best mid range set, but it is my favourite technic set ever. Fun build, looks fantastic. Some very clever building ideas too. I am no expert, but I am pretty sure it will go in price a lot. Future classic! Quote
Rijkvv Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 I'm surprised I see some flagship sets. Personally I think the two backhoes can be counted as such. They may not have a very high piece count, but were among the most complicated sets of their respective era's. Piece count doesn't say everything. Today's sets contain many pins, increasing the piece count. As a result, a recent set will be smaller than a set with the same piece count 20 years ago. So, I think you can count 8053 as mid-range, but not 8880 - neither 8455 and 8862. The 8865, the flagship of 1988, contained a mere 900 pieces. That means the 2012 pick-up wouldn't count as a mid-range set! I think you have to compare the set with more sets from their era. In the late '80s till the late '90s there were many great mid-range sets. It's hard to pick a favourite, so I picked two: -8460/8431/8438: IMO still the best mobile crane. Better functionality than 8421 for less money. -8459/8464/8439: The best front loader. It has been with good reason these two sets were re-released twice. Quote
skylinedan Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 Yeah, the 8053 is kinda on the line far as parts count, I really like the 8284 too, that would be one of my favorites too, dont care for the buggy, but the tractor I think is dead on. Dan Quote
AKM_76 Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 I'm surprised that so many people love construction sets. I like them also but they are not my favorite ones. I'm quite new here and what also surprises me is how many people love retro 'studded' sets, I'm not a fan of them personally ;) Quote
