Need help, up and down motion

i need help in making an up and down motion using the nxt motor with a specific range of motion

i saw a video in youtube mentioning a slider crank mechanism with a parralel linkage, i dont know what does this mean

below. It converts rotary motion to linear motion (much like the reciprocating pistons in old-fashioned steam locomotives):

thank you very much for the reply. i also found the video that i was looking for. instead of having the motor next to the slider crank they have it beside the mechanism

the range of motion depends on how big the wheel part is.

If the diameter of the wheel is 5 studs the linear motion you can archive is 5 studs
