Just a quick fairly insignificant question: are there any traditional Smiley lego faces with the minifigs in the new sets? Or are they gradually becoming extinct.

There are a few most most.. :'-( ...are sadly becoming extinct!

How about a fleshtone with a traditional face :-D

Check the new A-wing mechanic ;-)

Still, a disturbing trend. I grew up with smiley faces and some exceptions to it (still, all had smiley faces except for the villains). Nowadays, every face needs to be unique, it seems. Exo-Force, KK2, they all have tons of faces, where most 'old' space and castle figs had smiley faces.

Growing up, i always thought of it as cynical when all that the MF's would do is smile when they're killing each other :-) .

Back on topic, it is sad that there are few (oh so very few) smileys available with new sets. (besides fleshies :-X ). I hope there is more of a mix between non-smileys and smileys, probably not though. :-(

Me too. By having heads with actual emotions displayed, it added character to the figs. Up until I saw the ones in Alpha Team, I looked at Lego minifigs more as "children's learning toys", like the equally sterile Playmobil faces. No different races, nothing but "happy"... bleh.

I don't like the fleshies, but I suppose they can be put up with if just used for licensed characters... though it'd be nice to have yellow versions as well.

Anyway, I think this best sums up how mild the situation at hand is:

Blasphemy! It's to the Gallows for you. :-P

And on another note, I love Yellow skins but I have to admit, fleshies work well for sailor with scurvy.

You can never have enough smilies. :-)

I dissagree. If I was growing up in the 80's, I really would have been ticked off by the fact that every figure, from every age and every location, had the same face and was always happy. That would make for a pretty boring lego collection, IMO.

Totally agree. ;-)

BTW, I actually like that they are using fleshies for licenses. It makes them stand apart from the othe themes, and makes them more realistic.

Go ahead, kill me. :-P

I have to add in a few comments myself.

First off I agree that the new, more emotional heads are definitely above our generic smiley faces. In fact they are quite better in my opinion, especially when it comes to the Castle Theme or for that matter Star Wars. But as someone who who grew up with the generic smiley face, I would surely miss them if they were to disappear.

As for the fleshies, I have no problems with them, I think, in a way you can consider this an up-grade. Oh yeah and the new X-Wing also has a fleshie smiley face just like the A-Wing's two minifigs. Don't for get the Imperial Officers. If I missed any let me know.

Fleshie Smileys On. X-D *wub*

I agree. While the new age emotion (Alpha team) and design (Star Wars) heads are fantastic and allow for a greater degree of customization, I think that losing the original smiley head would be a great loss for LEGO. I hate to sound completely nostalgic, but that silly smile with no eyebrows and nose on a yellow peg is instantly recognizable as LEGO. Just like how the three strategically placed black circles is Mickey Mouse's head. You just simply can't do without it!

I disagree with the fact that the LEGO faces up until Alpha team were boring. Alot of them had these really nice little details that made them all unique. Just look at the Fright Knights! Good ol' Bat Knight wasn't a smiler. Neither was the witch's diabolical laugh face! Also, differences in terms of eyebrows and mouth shape give it life, such as the Star Wars Episode 1 figures. Sure, they didn't have mouths that were half the size of their face, but it was a nice touch. While I love all minifig faces to bits, you have to remember that sometimes, it's the small details that count. Such as young Obi-Wan Kenobi's face. Small change in eyebrow and mouth shape, but it looked fantastic! To this day, it's still one of my favorite heads LEGO has ever produced.
