The big portal axle housings in the Unimog and 4x4 Crawler

Q1: Is there any reason one would wish to separate these two parts?

Q2: Is there a way to do so without damaging them? (Moot point I guess if the unanimous answer to Q1 is no)

@ SheepEater: When Conchas drove his 9398 4x4 Crawler on the beach, sand gummed-up the Portal Axle hubs and caused a lot of friction. One could separate the hubs using a Butter Knife to clean out the sand, using the technique on this
