jonwil Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Here is my latest MOC, an Octan petrol station built in the style of many petrol stations here in Australia. It features a convenience store and a place to get your car repaired. I am still working on further detailing such as more Octan signage and maybe some form of sign board listing prices etc if I can come up with a custom sticker for it. Need more detailing along the front of the driveway baseplate too. Front view showing the pumps, fire extinguisher, garbage bin and recycle bin. Top view: Side view showing off the Octan sign and the green and red striping: Overhead view: ' View of the pumps with the roof off. Note the RediATM sign indicating that one can find a RediATM ATM inside the convenience store: View of the front of the shop with a place to get your BBQ gas bottle refilled, some newspapers for sale and some various brands of oil, engine coolant and other fluids (including some Octan branded products in the red and green containers) View of the pumps with a customers Lamborghini: Interior of the convenience store. There is a RediATM ATM in the corner as well as a coffee machine, fridges containing soft drinks, fruit juice, sports drinks, bottled water, energy drinks, milk etc plus shelving containing motor products, snack food, convenience items etc: Inside the store an employee is sweeping the floors: Another employee (safely behind the counter protected by the keypad entry door, alarms etc) is serving the owner of the yellow Lamborghini outside who is buying a coffee and some petrol (he is paying with a $100 note because the Lamborghini uses so much fuel :): Meanwhile the mechanic fixes another customers Ute: More views of the station: Please let me know what you think of my creation :) Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 (edited) Very nice work jonwill! I always love a good Octan gas station. Especially when there is attention paid to products sold inside. TLG always seemed to skimp on that feature like fuel is all cars need. Too bad they don't make wide garage door panels. It'll be tough to change a tire. Really great job Edited February 22, 2013 by LEGO Guy Bri Quote
jonwil Posted February 22, 2013 Author Posted February 22, 2013 I might put a rack of tires out the front (in front of the gas pumps on the front group of studs), thanks for the idea. Quote
Bamos Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Jonwil that is a gas station every LEGO city would love to have. We don’t have any more like this in my town they either work on cars or sell gas but not both. Bill Quote
Kristel Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Nicely done, Jonwil. You've captured the essence of an Aussie petrol station perfectly. My only suggestion is that the interior of the shop could use some tiles. Quote

My only suggestion is that the interior of the shop could use some tiles. Great idea, Might go ahead and see if I have enough white tiles to do the job (and maybe I can find a way to use my 2 x 2 Octan logo tiles in the floor too somehow) EDIT: I think I need to visit a few local-area stations to get a feel for what material/color they tend to have on the floor and use that as inspiration (not sure that white would work, a gas station wouldn't use white as dirt shows up too easily) Also thinking about doing a signboard sticker complete with the usual "save 4c per liter" type discount offer on it. But for that I need to also visit some petrol stations and get a feel for just what the price of petrol actually IS these days (not having a car means I dont actually need to buy the stuff :) Edited February 22, 2013 by jonwil Quote
Locomotive Annie Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 A really great petrol station MOC. We still have this kind of petrol station in the rural area in which I live, but with most of them the lube bay and workshop has been closed down and the work area is only used for storage now. Quote
lightningtiger Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Now it's time for the tiger cast his eye over someone else's service station........excellent, a really, really excellent creation 'jonwil'.......though the workshop is a tad on the small side eh ? You need mirrors up in the store to stop theft and I totally agree......a rack of tyres out front ! Brick On 'jonwil' ! Quote
Captain Settle Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Nice MOC. I like how you made the interior. Quote
SalvoBrick Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 (edited) I like it, simple and complete at the same time. Edited February 22, 2013 by SalvoBrick Quote
jonwil Posted February 22, 2013 Author Posted February 22, 2013 You need mirrors up in the store to stop theft I have been thinking about how I can put some security cameras in (forget mirrors, security cameras are where its at these days) but haven't found a way and place to mount them that I am happy with yet. Andy D Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Excellent service station! Makes me long for the days when we had full service stations. For your tile, maybe a checkerboard pattern, maybe not white at all. The little details are great, and a tire rack would add to that. Too bad we even have to consider mirrors or security cameras, but that's "real life". Andy D Quote
Roger_Smith Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Very nice MOC, hasa realistic vibe to it. Gas stations don't look much different around here, too. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Fantastic MOC, I like this creation because looks like an official Lego set from the eighties! The garage with the sliding opening is my favourite detail! Quote
greg3 Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Nice!! Apart from the repair bay) it looks like the sort of petrol stations we have here too. The interior of the shop is especially realistic... Thanks for sharing. Quote
jonwil Posted February 24, 2013 Author Posted February 24, 2013 Have tiled the interior of the shop in light bluish grey 2 x 2 tiles in a grid pattern. Also changed the petrol pump hoses slightly and added a "service" sign to the service bay and replaced the black underside of the roof area over the pumps with white. Haven't figured out what to do with the front of the station other than a place for the tanker truck to unload its load. Thought about an air&water point and a tire rack but cant come up with good designs for either :( Thinking about how to mount a security camera pointing at the counter area to catch armed robbers. Also need to figure out what to do with the empty expanse of roof (e.g. more Octan signage, maybe the Octan flags I have) Quote
lightningtiger Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Remember how I did the air & water points in my designs 'jonwil'......they are easy. Driveway roof problem eh ? Lighting.....you need lighting at night do you ? Security cameras can be as simple as a trans-clear slope piece on a headlight brick in the wall up high or mounted on the ceiling. Oh, yeah for the pricing signage out the front why don't you copy the one from that Lego World display last week or your own version of a BP or Coles Express one. Your project is driving me further to start work on my roadhouse rebuild for Cuusoo......well anyway keep going and Brick On ! Quote

Thanks for the tips, I added a security camera (modeled after one in one of your ANZ bank MOCs). And for the air&water, I took inspiration from your Shell roadhouse for that. As for pricing signage, because making and printing stickers is hard (and because I dont have a clue if my printer works right now or if the expensive ink has expired and needs replacing) I am thinking of building a tall sign with just Octan logos (similar to the Shell sign on your Shell roadhouse and also to a Shell sign that used to be at a Shell station near me before it was rebuilt and got a full signage board) then use the trans-blue signage board flag from the last City Octan gas station set. And on the station roof, maybe some lights on the underside could work if I can come up with an idea that looks good (ideas would be appreciated) but what I am really stuck on is what to do for the top surface of the roof as right now its totally blank and boring. jonwil Posted February 25, 2013 Author Posted February 25, 2013 Slowly adding more details to this, will post some new pictures soon :) Still need design ideas for a tire rack and ideas for what to do with the top of the roof (both the shop roof and the driveway roof) and maybe for for the price board. lightningtiger Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Take a look at my past tyre bay workshops for rack ideas 'jonwil'. Quote
jonwil Posted February 25, 2013 Author Posted February 25, 2013 Thanks for the tip, saw your Bridgestone tire dealer which then pointed me at the orange City Garage (which you used as inspiration for the Bridgestone dealer) which gave me the idea I needed to build a nice Octan tire rack :) Just need to figure out what to put on this vast expanse of roof and how and where to add more Octan printed parts (especially the ones I have with the Octan yin-yang logo) Quote

Ah, now the roof issue.....perhaps a sign similar to that on 7993 ? Quote
jonwil Posted February 25, 2013 Author Posted February 25, 2013 Hmmm, taking a look at various petrol station roofs on Google Maps, I can see that most of the driveway roofs have essentially nothing on top Maybe stick an air-conditioning unit on the roof of the shop area might work but I dont really see any big signage on the driveway roof (not with the big sign-pole I already added) I gave thought to submitting this design (when its finished) to Cuusoo but I decided not to as all it would do is take votes from other petrol/gas station MOCs. Quote
lightningtiger Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Trust me, I have three on Cuusoo, Shell at 87. Octan at 36 and BP at 23 so I'm not sure how that one would go and mine except the Shell seem like a waste of time....like they are way off 10K. I guess less might mean more......you may not have too add too much to the roof.......you don't want to over kill it do you ? . Quote
