danielnzlego Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Hi All, Recently decided to get back into Lego in a big way and have been working on my City-themed layout. Please watch my video and let me know what you think. Quote
DaveBey Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Howdy and welcome to Eurobricks! What a nice layout; thanks for sharing! I think you'll really enjoy the mining sets. After the Farm sub-theme of City, Mining is probably the best. I really enjoyed building those sets and can't wait to see how you integrate them into your layout. Maybe you could even add the Harbor inbetween the mining and water areas? Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave Quote
danielnzlego Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 Hi Dave Yes, I'm looking forward to setting up the mining. I'm going to use this picture as my inspiration. I considered the farm sets but decided they were a bit kiddie, and my layout was too small to incorporate them. I've also tried to figure out how to include the harbor set but unfortunately for now it's going to be left out as I also want to have some room for my campervan and caravan to set up behind the beach :) Quote
Vindicare Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 (edited) You have a great start going there. The middle section(on the green baseplates) looks a bit...thrown together. It doesn't really look like a cohesive street. I know you're just starting out, just something to think about. I like seeing 76005 in there as I plan to add that to my layout as well. I'm not sure what the secondary market is for the Creator houses, but as your layout grows, I highly recommend them. 4954 Model Townhouse will probably set you back the most. danielnzlego Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 Thanks for the feedback, and I agree, but I'm hoping once I add the trees, pavements etc. it will look more natural. I really like that townhouse but being a nearly 6-year old set I've never seen that anywhere for sale. It's hard enough down here in New Zealand to get some of the older sets from a couple years ago. lightningtiger Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Very nice layout 'danielnzlego'.....make sure you leave room for the upcoming Town Centre set.....at least you are like me and own a 7993 service station....no new one this year. Keep going and Brick On ! Quote
Bregir Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Poor boy not being allowed to play with daddy's toys! ;) Maybe when he grows up a bit? I shall look forward to seeing more. I a curious as to how much you are thinking to build and design yourself. Do you plan on sticking to the official sets, or will we see some personal creations in between? Quote
danielnzlego Posted February 18, 2013 Author Posted February 18, 2013 lol he can play with them once his motor functions are working a bit better. for example, the way he grabs the train, he derails it in 1/10th of a second. For now I'm mainly sticking with the way sets come, but I have a few ideas about working the environment. I'm not sure I'm creative enough to come up with cool stuff on my own. Quote
Bregir Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I shall be looking forward to seing your work on the environment as much as your boy will be to get to play with it! ;) And don't worry about creativity - give it a go, if you get a good idea! That's what I have done, at least! :D Quote
The Player Nº1 Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I like to see updates from LEGO cities. I'll look forward to it! Keep the good work! Quote

I'm not sure I'm creative enough to come up with cool stuff on my own. I'm with you. I just build a landscape. I have the white 1x4 picket fence pieces for the Creator houses, a ton of flower stems to use as grass, still working on getting 2x2 dark bley tiles for sidewalks. Quote
melbs Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 cool simple layout, funny how we both got more or less the same sets to start our own lego city. Quote
LAKAbricks Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Hi danielnzlego and welcome to Eurobricks! It's a good start, you have got for your city. Plenty of space I agree with Legocrazy81 that the middle section needs some more structure, otherwise it's a great city. Maybe some of the buildings, e.g. the bank and the building from Spider Man, should be arranged around a town square. And as LT says - leave space for the town square set Regarding the hospital, you can replace the green base plate underneath with a cross road plate. In that way, you will get a driveway to the hospital and the city will look less green. I look forward to further updates Quote
Stoo73 Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Definitely a good start for a small city. Adding in the extras like trees, benches, footpath detail will enhance the look and feel and give you a very decent layout. Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 A big way indeed! A lot of great sets in a nice spread. I hope you have plans for many more sets. Will this be a temporary layout, or one you can leave out permanently? Quote
kasmca Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Great start. Try buying off bricklink instead of just relying on sets and pick a brick. You can get better prices and more pieces. Here is a link to Grey 32x32 base plates: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=3811 Quote
