Ludzik Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 After about a week of rebuilding/redesigning I think I'm finally more or less happy with the rough shape of the castle. The front guard tower seems to be of the right proportions to the rest of the structure and the rear tower feels the right size as well. I still feel like the gate house needs some work: might extend it 1 or two studs to overhang over each side and of course the inside of the castle needs major work. I'm planning to have a small manor in there (more or less centered and raised to have the floor at level with the walkways) Lowest level (basement/dungeon) will have armory, cells, well, and a privy ;) Ground level (bridge level) will have a small stable and troop quarter as well as a kitchen. Not sure if I I want the castle to be surrounded by a moat or just leave it as it is sitting on a rock. Captain Settle Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Nice castle, but I think the colours are a little mismatched. Quote
Ludzik Posted February 13, 2013 Author Posted February 13, 2013 In the base or the walls? The base is supposed to be "natuarl" rock/mountain/growth. Quote
Ludzik Posted February 13, 2013 Author Posted February 13, 2013 Here's an updated view of the front castle - front ] and an updated view of the interior castle interior Now I'm semi stumped as I don't know how to finish off the main level... I want to have a "stable" for about 2 horses, already have an area with a door and a window set aside for a kitchen (the area below the smaller rear tower) Quote
Bregir Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Nice castle :) I like the drawbridge with the chains. And is that a working portcullis? :) I've got two suggestions though. 1) Its very "sqaury" - Have you considered trying your skills with a round or hexagonal tower or so? Maybe the small rear tower? 2) The gatehouse/tower is very slim, when viewed from the side. I think I would make it bigger to make it seem more like a sturdy bastion, protecting the gate. Personally, I quite like the colours. They make it seem less "perfect" and more realistic to me. Brick on! :) Bregir Quote
kermit Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 I guess the usage of black for the interior means that you are working with what pieces you have. I looks good. Is that section above the gate removable? and is the part with the windows a room? Quote

I like your idea regarding making one of the towers rounded or hexagonal. Regarding the gatehouse: I might make it more rectangular rather then L shaped and make the back part a "guard shack" with beds for the guards. I guess the usage of black for the interior means that you are working with what pieces you have. I looks good. Is that section above the gate removable? and is the part with the windows a room? Yeah.. I wish I had more plates of other colors. I might replace what remains "visible" after I'm done populating the ground level. The part with windows is a walkway from the stairs on the lefts side (as you face the gate) to the ladder that's on the right side of the gate house. Also during siege you could place archers or crossbowman there as well. Oh yeah, part of the gatehouse removes (the left part of the L) Quote
Ludzik Posted February 15, 2013 Author Posted February 15, 2013 I've expanded/beefed up the gate tower updated gate tower gate tower top view This next one shows how the gatehouse looks with the top removed. I had to leave a section of top permanently mounted in order to reinforce the gate rails. gate tower, top removed Quote
Ludzik Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 Here's a bit of an update.... the roof is going to be modular/removeable so for now it's kinda of sitting on top of the second story of the Lord's rooms. Entry is from the ground level and there is steps up to the sleeping chambers which is the level with the windows visible here. lord's house Quote
Ludzik Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 Did some more work - finished the roof on top of the lords chambers, and built a roof over the rear guard tower. Now I'm thinking about how to do a small stable (2 horse) inside and if I don't want to put a roofed structure on the front gate house (place where the guards can retreat during rain, etc rear view Quote
Captain Settle Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Wow, this looks much better now. Before when I said it looked mismatched I meant it had too much black, tan and red, but you've fixed that now! You should have small accents of other colours to make it less perfect and to avoid grey wall syndrome, and you've done that. Well done! Quote
Ludzik Posted February 18, 2013 Author Posted February 18, 2013 Thanks! Btw, this is what I"m thinking about doing to the front gate house optional tower gate house It protects the entrance to lower level from elements, gives the guards a place to hide out from the elements and protects the winch mechanism from direct enemy fire. Ludzik Posted February 18, 2013 Author Posted February 18, 2013 Found some corner roof tiles so now there is an option 2 for the tower house gate house tower option 2 Quote
