legotechnicblue Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 I am planning on building a lego flatbed trailer to haul of my lego technic vehicles. My dimensions are 24 studs by 70 studs long. This will be pulled by my 8110 unimog. I'm looking for an easy way to connect a hitch to my unimog that will also be easily installed on the trailer. Quote
dr_spock Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Here is an example of a drawbar hitch I did for my mog. Or are you looking for a 5th wheel type hitch? Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 (edited) you could mount one of these on the Unimog. Then use one of these on the trailer. That's what I did on my tractor. Edited January 20, 2013 by dhc6twinotter Quote
Aussie BJ Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 I used this one on my latest MOC. This worked ok for my requirements, but I'm guessing you'll need it to pivot up and down as well? Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Quote
legotechnicblue Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 (edited) Thank you. Now do you have any ideas on how to make a strong working crank jack? Aussie BJ can I see the rest of your trailer as I am also looking for a way to connect the hitch to the flatbed part. I am kind of going for something like this: But longer with three axles Edited January 20, 2013 by legotechnicblue Quote
matias bendtsen Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Thank you. Now do you have any ideas on how to make a strong working crank jack? to the crank jack i would do something with a gear rack, and a ratchet, to stop it going up again. Quote
legotechnicblue Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 Thanks i will try to incorporate it into my trailer. Quote
legotechnicblue Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 Now all I need is the angle in which the hitch mounts to the trailer Quote
Aussie BJ Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 My trailer was a folder camper which was pretty light so the strength of connection didn't need to be to extreme. more pictures here http://macleannsw.com/handyman/lego/Discovery.htm I've done a few what we call in Australia 'Jockey Wheels', this was the strongest smallest version I've made thus far. Also another trailer hitch system I've used before. I can't open Alasdair's 'Trailer Legs' doc has anyone got a picture of it? Quote
legotechnicblue Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 (edited) I am on my iPad so i can't open it but I looked on the laptop and it is cool Edited January 20, 2013 by legotechnicblue Quote
Moz Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 (edited) or this Sorry for the awful images, but they're crops from the edges of photos of my road train. It's very similar to Aussie BJ's one, except that's the receiver rather than the trailer (the trailer is just a liftarm, pic here http://moz.net.nz/le...isc/trailer.jpg of the arrangement I used) I made the receiver pivot up and down because it simplified the build. The receiver on truck hitches is already the mechanically complex part, and this way the pivot goes in under the trailer where it's not as obvious. I found the 3 long axles and half bushes were necessary to stop the receiver pulling apart under load. But I was hanging 3kg / pulling 20kg with it, so for less silly builds that probably isn't necessary. Edited January 20, 2013 by Moz Quote
Pat-Ard Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Hmmm, I like the hitch discussion. Did anyone ever tried a hitch to open and close with pneumatics? Pat Quote
Lakop Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 A ball and socket connection is what I would recommend with some sort of linking bar (if that makes sense). Similar to what the third poster has said. H Quote
legotechnicblue Posted January 21, 2013 Author Posted January 21, 2013 A pneumatic hitch would be cool. Someone should try it Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 A pneumatic hitch would be cool. Someone should try it I have made one of those too. Quote
Johnny P Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 my trailer is hooked on with a towball and socket. works well for me and moves in every direction you want and looks realistic. but now i am looking for ideas on how to build a remote controlled fifth wheel hitch . not automatic . remote controlled. @ legotechnicblue sorry for hijacking your topic but its in the same theme i suppose? grtz Johnny Quote
legotechnicblue Posted January 21, 2013 Author Posted January 21, 2013 O that's fine. I was looking for a fifth wheel hitch but then realized a bumper pull trailer is easier. I figured out my jack and hitch but it won't let me upload it? Any suggestions. I want to show it off Quote
Pat-Ard Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 @legotechnicblue: do you have a Dropbox account, there you could place it in the public folder an deeplink the picture... Pat Quote
Paul202 Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 A hitch by itself probably wouldn't be that hard, and if you want to run an axle through it you could easily do it with one of the new joints from the Unimog set. Quote
legotechnicblue Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 What joints are you meaning Quote
Pat-Ard Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Hi, here is my pneumatic trailer hitch. It fits the 8110 Unimog. Pat Quote
Paul202 Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=92910 http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=92911&in=S The best part is that you can transfer drive between the joints if you want to. Quote
