Since this set came out, I have been bummed with the new theme for Lego Technic that all large sets must have electric motors in order to be great. My favorite is still the 8285 Tow Truck from 2006. Great looks, great function, and most of all great playability.

So, I decided to change the 9397 Log truck to all manual action. The four functions are still activated under the doors, but now are hand driven. To accomplish this, I switched out the "powered" gear box for the "manual" gear box. In my opinion, it's a lot more fun as I can load the logs faster now than with the motor. Here are a couple pictures:

This is my answer to "if you don't like how Lego designed it, change it."

Let me know what you think.

I like the idea of the manual playability as an alternative. Do you have any video of how quickly and smoothly your solution performs when mounted in the truck?

No video yet. I will see what I can do next weekend. Thanks to the 20-12 gear increase, the movements work quickly, but at the same time smooth enough for playtime and best of all, they didn't slip!

I like the concept and agree about the motors. Where are your tan gears - do you like the LBG ones better? I do! :)

I do have tan gears, just didn't have enough to make the gearbox without taking my other mocs apart. Next bricklink order will include more gears.

I love this, I do get somewhat annoyed with all the power functions in sets when they could drop the function(and the price by at least $20) and just have the power functions as a addon.

TLG is listening. 42006 is proof of that.

I agree with the manual funtions on technic models. The 9395 with manual functions was a wonderful kit and a very solid build. That was my favorite kit for 2012 although the 9398 Crawler was equally as solid and made the most eyes roll when I showed that to friends.

I think LAs are bad enough even with a motor, even worse without. Well, you did ask

Would you like to share your version with pneumatics?
