rriggs Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Hi all I was looking at my 7498 Police Station the other day and wondered how much work it would take to turn it into a fire station. Change the blue bits for red and change the cells in a dorm. Sounds easy... What I didn't take into account was the fact that the police station vehicle bays aren't tall enough for a fire engine. So, I needed to raise the roof by two rows of bricks which also then meant modifying the stairs and walkway over the garages and made the rebuild of the cells into a dorm more fiddly. However, it's done and the overall effect is one which makes it look like the fire station I imagined plus doesn't look like extensive work has taken place which was my concept from the start! Venunder Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 A good modification and it looks like a good Main Station for a city. When I build my city I was going to use two of last yeas Fire Stations but now I might do something similar to your creation. :) Quote
eurotrash Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 What an effective conversion job - It looks really good! Thanks for sharing it with us! Quote
lightningtiger Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 AWESOME and realistic conversion 'rriggs', any chance of interior photos ? Brick On 'rriggs' ! Quote
rriggs Posted January 14, 2013 Author Posted January 14, 2013 AWESOME and realistic conversion 'rriggs', any chance of interior photos ? Brick On 'rriggs' ! Thanks for the feedback guys. I didn't take any interior photos LT as the interior is pretty basic. There's not much that you can't see through the windows from outside... There's two single beds and a TV in the dorm and a few desks and coffee machines dotted about in the main building. Cheers Rog Quote
Veynom Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 If you replace all the white bricks by red ones, you will end up with the same color scheme as in the 80's for Lego fire stations. ;) Quote

The whole concept was how easy the conversion was going to be and I think changing the white to red would be a big job..... Speaking of 80s fire stations, you might have just pre-empted my next project..... Cheers Rog Edited January 14, 2013 by rriggs Quote
rriggs Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 I ventured out through the snow today and got hold of 60001 and 60002 to go with my newly converted fire station. Only problem, nowhere to park them so I spent this afternoon extending the fire station to have two extra bays: As you can see the two bays are full height bays big enough for fire engines although its current the support van and the chief's car parked there. There is also now a fireman's pole next to the external staircase and their very own fuel pump at the far left hand side. Other alterations include the relocation of the helipad to the roof of the new garages. The helipad has in turn been replaced by a new radar. The chopper itself is a recoloured version of the police chopper from the forest police station. There's also a new bigger tree out front (again pinched from the forest police!). I have also included an interior shot (as requested by LT!) which shows the chief's office on the top floor with a storage area below and reception at the bottom. The dorm has a chair, coffee and a TV as well as two beds. Cheers Rog Quote
rriggs Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 (edited) I'm thinking of extended the fire station again with a call centre and maybe some extra garages. Question is though - Do I continue to extend lengthways or rebuild into a courtyard with the garages extending out from the offices? Option 1 below if the current layout. The choice is between Option 2 and Option 3... Any thoughts? Option 2 will be much easier which makes me edge towards Option 3 but Option 3 I am unsure how to do the access to and from the garages within the space I have on the roadplates...? Cheers Rog Edited January 22, 2013 by rriggs Quote
tomdobs55 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I'd go with option 3 would look like a nice big city headquarters. Don't forget a mechanics bay to fix the broken down trucks. Our ladder company is almost 20 years old and we always have to use the spare truck;) Quote
scottwb2010 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I like the way you have made the conversion from a the police station to fire station. This makes a decent "CITY" fire station/HQ even before you added the extention. Great job well done. As far as your new extention options go may option 2 might make it too long, but if you modify option 3 slightly you could be onto a winner. If you changed the garages from facing each other, because imeadiatly as they leave the bays they have to do a sharp turn and swap them placea with the offices and call centre so that the engines drive straight out the courtyard. Keep the dorm and helipad above the garage bays and have the offices and call centre tothe sides opposite each other! Just my opinion. Quote

It's getting out of the garages that I was wondering about too... Your idea could work though. I was hoping for a grand entrance of some sort to the offices which might need a rethink if I go that way... Cheers Rog Quote

streifen Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 That is a nice conversion! I like it! You may want to find a way/place to fix a firemen's pole for fast activation. Looking at the big picture (read 1st and 2nd photos), your firemen may be called into action soon with the 2 giant minifigs looming over the horizon! Quote
rriggs Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 That is a nice conversion! I like it! You may want to find a way/place to fix a firemen's pole for fast activation. There already is fireman's pole. If you look behind the windows next to the external staircase you can see the yello pole that brings the firemen down between the two sets of garages. And, don't worry about the giant minifgures - they're harmless at this time of year. Haloween they can be a pain but in January they're fine... Cheers Rog Quote
rriggs Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 It's WIP at the moment but I started the expansion this afternoon. I think that the pics speak for themselves.... The original plan was to put a call centre on top of the two new garages but I think that there will actually be plenty of room for that in the main building which leaves me the issue of what to put on there instead... The empty grey plate is either going to be a car park or where the training tower will go. Cheers Rog Quote

rriggs Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 Another update. Rebuild of the front of the main office complex to make it less flat/plain looking. Also added a second storey to the extreme right hand side, added an additional staircase, a guardrail on top of the new garages and made the top of the fireman's pole/staircase roof less fussy: Still no decision on the empty grey plate... C&C welcome! Cheers Rog Quote
hush Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 WOW i love what you have done can't wait to seen it develop further Quote
Artifex Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Wow, the station is looking better and better! It feels like your boys could put down global warming! (A different kind of fire but you get my meaning... I hope! ) Quote
rriggs Posted February 3, 2013 Author Posted February 3, 2013 (edited) Some small updates yesterday. First attempt at the training tower is now done. I'm fairly happy with it but can't help thinking it looks like it should be on an airfield rather than at a fire station. I think it's the colours that give that feel so might have to play about with it a bit more. I'm happy with the overall design though... I've also added a low fence/wall around the boundary and a couple of fire brigade signs at the entrance. I've also started planning the interior and have started to get some of the accessories I will need together. Plenty of office equipment and also a couple of pizzas for the canteen. With the grey plate now in use, the next decision is what to put on top of the new garages... Cheers Rog Edited February 3, 2013 by rriggs Quote
Zed_43 Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 I really like your MOD / extensions rrigs!!!! This is a great fire station you made there. However, I really dislike the bows over the doors on the garages roofs!!! It doesn't fit the modern style of the whole station! Your tower is a great idea. Maybe you should work on the design of the upper part. I find it too simple... But, good job done here! Your idea and realisation are awsome! Quote

Thanks for the comments! I agree about the bows/arches and am going to replace them with simple beams to match the rest of the building. Cheers Rog Quote
