I dont know if you had such thread here before, but in my opinion it would be a handy thread. Which sets are good buy for parts. The model it self ignored? It should be live thread too as some sets after price drop are great bundles of parts, even if you dont care much about model it self.

So i might start the discussion on few sets i noticed myself.

8070 - i noticed it can be picked up for 74eu from german amazon. I own one already, but for that price it looks like a nice bundle of parts for car mocs. Independable suspension, good wheels, a lot of panels. Good selection of black and red beams too. I love that set,but power function is bad. It would benefit more for not having it, but saying this you still get that m motor and a lot of mechanical bits.

9395 - a tow truck. 900+ parts for about 50eu? looks good. red/black parts, V4, handy wheels. Did i say it was 900+ parts for 50eu? ;)

Would want to hear your opinion on few sets. Logging truck? I sow it on amazon.de for 78eu. Good buy? What about 8880? I like the set and looks like some great suspension, plus lots of studded parts. opinions?

8110, it goes for 130 euro around here.. not bad for 2000+ pieces including 4 big new tires, 2 large pneumatic cylinders, 1 M motor, and a lot of panels and orange pieces.

If you are looking for specific parts, you could just buy what you wanted from Bricklink (or "Lego Direct"), and forget buying an entire set. You could thus avoid getting duplicate parts you already own (and don't need).

For a starter myself, 8110(€162) and 9398(€159) serve me well! I ordered parts from bricklink to mod both of them and it the addiction price have exceeded my 2 sets investment (must really work your sum and part lists before ordering).

I'd prefer to buy sets of the same scale or closed to one another. I've been pondering to get 8043(€183) or 42006.

My main source of extra parts was used 8285s, with patience I have picked up 3 or 4 for an average of 60-70 euros each. I have also seen a bunch of 1:10 ferraris (8386) sell for under 15 euros, but with shipping its still ~20, and the set doesn't have that great a variety of parts.

Cheap unimogs are also a good deal or new parts, although I find it difficult to mix the orange parts with other colors.

9394 jet plane, lot of red panels and flex beams for such a small model and it's cheap. plus it has 2 of the rare 13m black gear rack which imo are very useful in MOCing. i didnt like the model.

8043 motorized excavator, but its beginning to be expensive now. technic set with a lot of pf parts and yellow beams and most number of gears.

8109 flatbed truck, pretty cheap, good amount of red and yellow panels and beams plus two of the rare 13m black gear rack again.

I've heard the philosophy many times that a price point of roughly ten cents [uSD] a part is a good deal, but does that apply to Technic sets? I've only really heard it used in relation to Town and Trains sets.

A think you missing the point of the thread m8. ;)

We are talking about sets who got a nice selection of parts and most important some sets drop in price quite nicely making them a great part bundles.

I might be more of an old fashion lego worm, but I like to have a selection of parts and then just see what works, what doesn't in real time. So when buying a set you get some of the parts you never knew you could use, but them those turn out extremely handy.

I think we got a bit spoiled at this lego golden age. We can get almost any part or srt we need online, just click and here you go. Back when we were children most of us had p work with hat we have. That's how some awesome constructions and ideas came to life!

Agreed. Just bought the 8109 yesterday for the 3x11 red panel, the wheels and the more of the 13 gear racks.

I don't know any better sets in parts/price ratio than the 9394 jet plane. It has red panels that the 8070 doesn't have.

The 9396 is also quite good: three of these 87408.jpg a few of these 98989.jpg, 2 transmission rings and levers, a big 36 teeth gear.

I also agree that (especially in the first year or years) it's a lot better to buy sets than just parts. You can learn a lot in the studless system when building sets, you can meet parts you'd maybe miss when working with a design software. You can see interesting techniques, interesting color schemes (I personally love TLG's sometimes random-ish colors in the internals).

I always buy sets, to increase my parts collection. Usually I wait for some sale that is 30% off or more, at local stores,

or I just buy second hand sets for half of the original price. Recently I bought used 8070, 8071, 8109 and 9397, for 160 €.

For me, any Technic set, newer (studless) or older (studded) is interesting for parts collection, as long as the price is favorable.

I got the 8110 for around 140€ last year. Big deal. And 8070 for roughly 70€. Both great sets with very good PPP ratio in my case.

Not a shop, two seperate sellers. I use ebay mobile app. If I like the deal then bid or buy it now. I try to avg below 5 cents per part after shipping.

The 9396 Helicopter also has the new mini turntable, which was one of the influencing parts which prompted my purchase. I also purchase, partly for the model, but with the parts mainly in mind.
