gundamz Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 I have a bunch of 2x2 bricks from when I was a kid. I am now more of an AFOL and I am wondering if 2x2 bricks are useful at all for MOCs. If so, how would you usually use 2x2 bricks? I just bought MMV, which is more of an AFOL set, and that set uses very few 2x2 bricks, opting to use more 1x2 bricks instead. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 With LEGO you are free to MOC as you wish. The biggest issue is the thickness. If you don't want a thicker wall, then you won't want those bricks. They may be good filler pieces if you don't care about the color. I don't use them very often because I prefer thinner structures, but have used on occasion. Good luck in your MOCing. Quote
Kristel Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 I use them mainly for supports that are hidden, such as for holding up the floor in a modular building where the ground floor is a couple of bricks off the baseplate. I also found them useful as supports for tiered CMF displays. When I first started building MOC modulars, I thought I needed lots of long bricks. While these are useful for doing the sides of the buildings, it turns out that 1x2 (modified or plain) are the most useful for getting detail into a facade! Quote
legolijntje Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 I often use them as support under de ground in dioramas (so for hills and mountains etc.) Quote
1974 Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 This is the weirdest question ever on EB Are you talking 'bout a plain old 3003 brick that TLG so far have put into 2233 sets (15 just this year)? Yes, that brick is quite usefull Quote
Hrw-Amen Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Yes i use them all the time in manners similar as others have said. Also in my modular buildings I like them fairly sturdy whilst maintaining details in the front and rear, therefore I tend to make my side walls 1 brick thick (Which when with another modular then become two bricks thick, one from each building.) bricks thick but the front and rear walls I tend to make two bricks thick so the 2X2 is very useful for filling up gaps. Not quite as useful as a 1X2 but still I use quite a lot of them. Quote
dr_spock Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 I use them in my MOCs wherever it makes sense to use them. Steampunk OG-9 homing spider droid by dr_spock_888, on Flickr Quote
eurotrash Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 The beauty of Lego is that all the pieces fit together and there is definitely a place for the humble 2 x 2 brick! I use them hidden for supporting upper levels in Buildings, use them exposed for things like buttresses, as fill in for Rock and Mountain Slopes, and generally anywhere that the depth doesn't matter. Don't get me wrong I probably won't buy any more of them, but I will continue to use them.... Quote
TWP Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 You could also use them for a minecraft MOC? But if you don't really like minecraft you could always use them as supports, as others were saying. Quote
Lego65200animations Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 I use them as supports from bricks usually on walls. I also use them as floors (if you have a lot of them). Quote
LEGO Historian Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Good Lord.... 2x2 bricks (which along with the 2x4 brick were the first LEGO bricks introduced in 1949).... have lots of useful uses!! Quote
fred67 Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Incredibly useful; for any 2x building (normally with 2x4, but need 2x2 for areas around doors and windows), the recent monorail tracks people have built makes copious use of them; one great trick I learned from EB a couple of years ago is that you can use them on top of duplo bricks - I have a lot of duplo from when my kids were young, now you can use to bulk up supports and inside buildings and build on top with standard bricks by using 2x2. I guess like most of the responders here, it seems like a weird question - like any brick, they can be useful what you're building can make use of them. Quote
happymark Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 (edited) the basic bricks do not seem very useful if you are thinking about minifigure scale - which is the most popular scale. but in other scale, or some sculptures , or see the art works from Nathon sawaya - basic bricks can be very useful! PS. I have to say minifigure scale is so popular , even CREATOR line (used to be non-minifugre scale) now has many minifigure sets.. just my 2 cents Edited December 31, 2012 by happymark Quote
