JopieK Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 I just noticed the NXT set begin discounted at LEGO.com, often a sign of discontinuation. With LEGO so deep into things like the LEGO League etc. it is unlikely they will discontinue it without having an alternative. Or are they just trying to sell a bit more?! Al those sensors etc. are also discounted so I'm wondering... Quote
roamingstop Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 It would make sense with the advent of Arduino and Raspberry Pi that low cost; small; easy to use electronics will become ever more popular... and without the powerful backend of graphics. So with all the sensors also discounted I could easily see something happening... The old NXT motors could do with some improved designs to reduce slippage / windup - and more accurate position control. We finally got PF servo's and Large motors - so there could be something nice coming in the next 6 months.. Quote
Cwetqo Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 I wrote long time ago that we will get new nxt in 2013. It just remains to be seen whether it will be just small change (like in nxt 2) or will we finally see unification with other lego themes and switch to pf standard. Quote
Conchas Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 ... or will we finally see unification with other lego themes and switch to pf standard. I'd not put much faith on such dreams... Quote

Well, small would be very inappropriate, at my school we have almost entirely switched to LEGO + PF in favor of NXT (except for the FLL of course where RCX and NXT are the only allowed platforms). Saberwing40k Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 I just checked the (U.S.) Lego site, and I don't see any discount. I seem to recall Mindstorms RCX 2.0 hanging around for like what, 10 years? I don't think any big things are going to be happening soon. Quote
mx2000 Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 I also saw Mindstorms out of stock at a bigger retailer nearby. I wonder if they will go with wireless communication for the motors/sensors. Would certainly make it easier to lift the 3+4 limit on the current generation NXT. Maybe with built-in infrared, in combination with the new "V2" IR receivers from the rock crawler to connect to existing PF hardware? Quote
