Recolouring Bricks.

I wasn't quite sure where to put this, because it isn't really related to minifigures, but does do with customization.

I've been expeirimenting with LDD and LDD Manager recently and ended up using pieces that don't exist in particular colors. For instance, dark brown.

I'm by no means a purist, but I was curious as to what other people thought of recoloring actual bricks, and if anyone's done it, what has worked the best?

I think markers and/or model building paint are best. Not lot of experience, but will have soon, recoloring some technic plug -> axle pegs for train motors (adding the middle wheel).
