Electricsteam Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 Here is a MOD of my favorite set 111. P.S. I know its not much , but I thought it was nice for a first MOD Front. Back. This is the box of set 111 The starter train set and this set holds a special place in my heart Here is a side view of what I have done. An angled view. What I have added to the set was 1. added a Plow 2. Added a few side bricks to make the boiler not as thin. 3. added the platform at the bottem and moved the wheels one stud closer on each side. Another view of the train. A sad end to a classic brick . P.S. I dont know what that dark spot is Quote
Phoxtane Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 Compared to more recent Lego train sets, this set certainly sends out the 'toy' vibe. It makes me think of Brio trains, in fact! Quote

Indeed. The thing is that until the late seveties/early eighties and the beginning of the technic range, there were far less specialized parts compared to now and sets had a very toyish/blockish look. I remember that things (i.e. many new parts appeared) changed when the first technic sets came out (1977) and the (classic?) space adventure started (1978) Quote

Also I found one of the two sets of these I own in a thrift store it didn't have much of the set but it had lots of random parts from the sixties like an original mini fig and a broken block I need help identifying and the second one I got on eBay for 20$ Update : I will update this post once I find my camera again and when imgur stops acting up. Hrw-Amen Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 I recall having a set like that as one of my first trains, not sure if it was that one though(?) but similar in about 1970. I had a lot of trains back then, most had 4.5V blue motors and battery boxes and were great fun. Does anyone remember that train carrying black ferry boat that the ends lifted up on? I had hours of fun with that loading the trains on and off. I found the baseplate for it the other day in a load of old bricks. I thought of trying to rebuild it, as it was one of my earliest favourites. Quote
zephyr1934 Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Does anyone remember that train carrying black ferry boat that the ends lifted up on? Looks like the baseplate is the hardest part to fake. Have fun... Quote

Out of curiosity, do you own the international or the Samsonite (USA) version? They have different baseplates. The Samsonite version has a plethora of studs in the center, while the TLG version had only the necessary studs on the edges. In either case, I'd hang on to either - they're worth a pretty penny. On topic: Nice to see where it all began - not to mention a MOD possible at the time of the set's release! I'd like to see someone tackle this simple train and use it as the inspiration for a modern MOC.. Edited November 28, 2012 by sixoh Quote

peterab Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Does anyone remember that train carrying black ferry boat that the ends lifted up on? I remember wanting that before I had a train. Despite going on a post dark ages binge buying up a lot of the sets I wanted as a kid I've still not bought that one. It's sort of my holy grail. I do have one of the black hinges though :-) Quote
Locomotive Annie Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 There's a delightful innocence of a simpler time about that set. Quote
