Freakin' sweet! About time we got some new tools. WAITASECOND! That set is from 2007 according to Brickset. How come I've never seen those parts listed on Bricklink? And there's also a sprue wheel of the old tools listed in the parts list of the set. Hmmmm confused.

Basically, this is a sneaky one.

Option #1 - updated inventory (pretty likely)

Every once in a while, LEGO will update a set-- that is, they'll keep the set number the same, but update the parts list. One example that horrified me was 9320. It used to come with TONS of chrome elements, but then they changed the inventory totally so that it no longer had nearly as much chrome. Anyway, it's quite possible that this set is getting an updated part list, and this new tool set is being included in the new inventory.

Option #2 - screwed up data (unlikely, but possible)

That part list comes from LEGO-- and the source for it is... sketchy. Take a second and go to LEGO.com's "replacement parts" screen, and check out the available parts that come from set 6166. You can see the part right there:

Now, the inventory data that LEGO uses is pretty reliable for "current" sets. But for older sets, it tends to be ... lacking. I did a little bit of scavenging there a while ago-- They had "inventories" for sets as far back as 1997, but there was a LOT that was missing. In other words, they'd have an inventory for 6097 Night Lord's Castle, but they DIDN'T include the red window frames in the inventory. So the inventory data was incomplete. It's also possible that some things were mis-labelled. For instance, things that have an updated element ID, but retain the same design ID. I don't really know on that one, but it's possible. All I can say is that the data for older sets isn't all that great. So it's POSSIBLE that because this is an old set, the inventory on LEGO's online parts replacement database is just screwed up for that set.

Hmmm. Thanks Dave. That kind of explains it for me.

Well I suppose if One were to hazard a guess, The new parts in will come with next years Great vehicles breakdown truck set. They definitely look more City styled than Friends. Though only five of the tools are new. Socket wrench, wheel nut brace, adjustable spanner, screwdriver and rechargeable power drill. Still, that's five tools that will prove a boon to any garage or workman.

The reason a lot of stuff seems to be "missing" is that LEGO Customer Service's site only lists the parts that they happen to have uploaded images of. It's not a matter of parts being removed from the inventory or otherwise being left out deliberately.

And it's not just older sets that have incomplete inventories. It can take months for new parts to be added to those inventories. Some Hero Factory and Ninjago parts from the past two years still don't have images uploaded. That doesn't mean you can't get replacement parts for those-- you just have to manually enter the Element ID.

Replacement parts do get updated on the Customer Service site when direct replacements are created (for instance, if midway through a set's production run they switch to a new variant of a part). However, I'm surprised they do this for sets so old. I guess since people ordering replacements could need parts replaced from sets released at any time, they just do a batch replace for all sets that include the element ID they're creating a replacement for.

The most likely answer is that this is simply a new version of the tool wheel element (with new and updated tool designs) that is going to appear in future sets (and possibly future batches of existing sets) similar to how they recently re-designed the life jacket element and how they replaced this propellor http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=4617 in certain sets with this one http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=92842 (the yellow seaplane was one set that had the propellor replacement)

Yeah, I suspected that was the case, although for some things, I thought it might have to do with the on-hand inventory of replacement parts fulfilment-- but that's just speculation on my part as to possible explanations. It sounds like you've confirmed with someone internal?

And it's not just older sets that have incomplete inventories. It can take months for new parts to be added to those inventories.

Yeah, I've noticed that a few times-- a particular part may be missing for a recent set, and then suddenly show up. I know I saw that happen with the Duplo ball tube in set 5601, as well as a couple other things.

However, I'm surprised they do this for sets so old. I guess since people ordering replacements could need parts replaced from sets released at any time, they just do a batch replace for all sets that include the element ID they're creating a replacement for.

My assumption was that that's when the database's history starts. When I was verifying colors with LEGO's internal DB back in 2003, the person I was working with said that he thought the database went back through the mid-90's somewhere, so 1997 seems like a possible fit. I didn't try many 1996 sets, but I think the few I tried didn't work.

If that continues, though, I wonder what'll happen when/if we start to see re-used set numbers!

I think that's a pretty good guess. I'll throw another one out there, it looks like the new City Fire Station also has a tool chest, so this might be in that set as well.

Great vehicles Flatbed truck 60017 only seems to come with a spanner and the back of the cab is taken up with a winch mechanism so that kinda rules that out.

Fire truck 60002 also comes with a box of tools in the back of the truck though the pics we've seen don't show anything new.

Bricks and more 10659 Blue suitcase is a mini gas station with tools so it might appear there. I suppose in the end though if it's replacing the old tool sprue wheel it'll just filter down in places like the S@H pick a brick section. And replacement parts.
