Kishin Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Why does the TLG not have them? I mean some sets are very popular. If they kept making them for maybe a few years I am sure many people would buy it. Mostly I am thinking about some of the SW sets but this could inclue other series as well. Your thoughts? Quote
Kikuichimonji Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 No. Why? Because TLC is a company. A company needs profit. And one of the ways to keep customers happy(and reach new ones), is to renew your product constantly. Secondly, it would be constly to produce old sets (which would also lower profit). Finally, most products have a limited availabilty time because at some point, the product just won't sell anymore. Lego sets are no exception. It's all about the money in the end... Quote
natelite Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 if people know they can always get the sets later, they will never sell. lego is a toy, not food where you don't mind getting the same thing again and again and again. toys generally last a long time. if TLG only makes 20 sets, what will happen once the market becomes saturated with the 20 sets? tlg will run out of business. and tlg can't keep every single set in production. that will require the maintenance of thousands and thousands of brick molds, box prints and storage space. not doable. best to recycle themes and create new sets. and have release old popular sets once in a while as legends. :-P Quote
Athos Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 lego is a toy, not food where you don't mind getting the same thing again and again and again. But if we could eat Lego... Steve Quote
Kishin Posted January 4, 2007 Author Posted January 4, 2007 Never really thought of those points *wacko* But I do not think it would hurt lego maybe to put out some more legends set, even if they were in limited quantitys. Maybe the Yellow Castle :) It was mostly basic bricks anyway so hopefully the investment to produce it would not be too large. Quote
exo attack Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 I think kishin means new and old sets. But imagine the size of the catalogue! Quote
phoinix Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 having a list of classic sets availiable each year yould be a great sub-theme... IKEA is also a company going for profit but they have a few classic pieces that are always availiable because they sell well... its like the grey suit.. everybody needs one and it never goes out of style.. we are not talking lego should only have old sets all the time.. im talking mostly new and maybe 5 old sets each couple of years.. in other words: more legends availiable for more time.. Clone comander Nodra 999 Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Ive been wanting one of those old monorail bases from the 90's. thos would fly off the shelfs like hotcakes Quote
Grrr Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Ive been wanting one of those old monorail bases from the 90's.thos would fly off the shelfs like hotcakes I'm not so sure on that - Have you seen the amount of MISB 6399's still floating around - it's insane. And in this we are talking about what is on of the most admired sets of all time (have a look at how many people want it on various wanted lists). I think lego should do longer production runs of some current sets however - often I want to get a set a month after release only to find it is sold out, and very difficult to back order. In regards to legends - I think they were a real mixed bag for lego. The castles ones sold like hotcakes - which is unsurprising as they are great parts packs and some of the best sets in history. Other sets like the town main street didn't sell that well at all (though arguably this was an awful choice for a legend). I think lego would do better making legends or similar rereleases of some smaller sets - 6693 comes to mind for instance - that truck still looks as modern as it did 20 years ago. It's a pity they've moved everything to 6/8 wide in the way of vehicles. Quote
Kishin Posted January 6, 2007 Author Posted January 6, 2007 The Castles have a lot of play value so work well with selling to children but they also manage to please the FOL crowd. I guess you could also think of Classic Space this way. Lot of play value and everyone loves them :-) Quote
mutley777 Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Re-releasing loads of old sets is a not a great idea for lego as so many have already said. However i think there is room for a better legends selection. A good idea would be to put a legend set on pre-orders for 3 months so lego can see how many to produce, then take away the abillity to order it and produce the number required! Can you imagine the gallaxy explorer! They would make a killing! Quote
