Will pneumatics come back or should I buy 8049?

Hello everyone,

I recently started building Technic. I don't have any pneumatics yet, but I really like them. However, I'm on a tight budget, and I definitely can't afford the Unimog at this time. However, a shop in my neighbourhood still has two 8049s, for 49€ each.

Now I don't really think that 8049 is such a great set, but I've read somewhere that the pneumatic parts degrade over time, so I'd prefer to have new ones, and this set contains a nice selection.

I was informed in the 2013 thread that none of the first half sets will contain pneumatics. So my question is: Do you expect pneumatics to come back after that, or will they be discontinued? Because if they will be back, I might just wait a while, hoping that the next pneumatic set will be better than 8049, but if not, I'll go out and spend my last Lego €€€s for this year on 8049.

BTW, would you consider 49€ a fair price, or do you know a place where I can get it cheaper (I'm located in Germany)?

The 8049 Tractor with Log Loader set is not available on Bricklink, but there are many possibilities on this German eBay webpage. According to Brickset, this set originally sold for £49.99 / US$59.99 (about 46.68 Euros), so the 49€ price seems reasonable. I would grab it!

Pneumatics are expensive parts to produce, so even if they make a return soon it's likely going to be in a more expensive model. 8049 isn't the most exciting model ever, but if you can get hold of it for a reasonable price then it's definitely a good way of getting some pneumatic parts.

49 € is a good price, but if you like to make a bargain. List it as a wanted set on BL.

The cheapest right now is 60 € but sometimes there are 8049 to a better price. I bought the super set 66359 for 49 € on BL.

I bought two of these, it's a nice part out set, but the design is not all that special. Another alternative, if you only want the pneumatics, is to order them from Lego Direct.

I just picked up a 8455 on Ebay for less that 200, just waiting on it to get here. Ten cylinders and 7 control valves, two pumps. I,m gonna have over 20 cylinders now with this set in my invintory and a bunch of valves.

Correct, I was just throwing that out there. I,m sure more sets in the future will have pnumatics, The uni mog was a hit, still is. The only draw back I see is we now have the new motor and servo so who knows for sure.

It's not really a set per say, but if all you want are some pneumatic components, that's probably the best deal going right now. I've become very weary of buying pneumatic parts from bricklink or ebay. That parts pack doesn't come with any "T" connectors, so you'll have to buy them separately from bricklink or LEGO Education. LEGO Education also sells the air tanks.

Why do you say that, I have bought dozens of pneumatic parts from Bricklink and never had any problems, I do buy new though.

My crane project currently has 48 cylinders and 32 cylinder brackets and will use 12 small pumps and 6 air tanks, all came from bricklink, (unless I had some left from 8049s that I parted myself, but I most likely have used them already on other mmodels). My unimog was built from parts, not a set.

I've purchased several small pneumatic cylinders and small pumps from ebay and bricklink, and all but one leaked. They were supposed to be new too. I've pretty much given up on buying pneumatic parts from either site, but I may not have a choice when it comes to the small cylinders.
