Is anyone intereted in a Technic draft at BrickCon 2012?

I participated in 2 Technic drafts while at BrickFair this year. it was really fun hanging out with other Technic builders, and i got a nice pile of parts too.

the first draft at brickfair was for 5 copies of 8110 unimog. 1 person purchased all the sets. then shares were sold at $20 each. you could buy multiple share and get multiple picks each time around. this way took a long time because there were over 30 shares sold so it took forever to go around and let each person pick.

the second draft was done with 1 copy of each of the following sets: 9396, 9398, 8043, and 8110. 4 people participated in this draft. 1 person bought all the sets. the total cost was split up 4 ways. at first i did not think you could do a draft with 4 different sets but there are lots of common parts in all these sets. all 4 sets were opened up, dumped in 1 big pile and sorted. This draft was very quick with only 4 people choosing.

Please post here if you are interested.

I might be interested, although I'm only about 90% sure I'll be at BrickCon this year.

We had a Technic parts draft at BrickMagic last year, and I think we had 15 or so people. We parted out some log trucks. It turned out good, although I think I would have preferred more smaller, non-motorized sets.

Yeah, I think I'd be interested. I've never done a draft before, but that's mainly because they never seem to have any Technic parts.

What you guys do is go out and buy 4 or more large/medium sets at the Lego store at the 30% discount and then do it yourselves...

Yeah, that's what we did at BrickMagic. It was very impromptu and not an official part of the event.

I'd love to get my hands on a few small pneumatic cylinders. :D

What are rules in those?

From the Brickcon 2012 website, the existing (non-Technic) rules of the "Draft" are:

"To participate, bring an unopened copy of LEGO® set(s)

“Small Draft” 9463 The Werewolf (236 pieces, about $20) Lego Shop.com

“Large Draft” 9476 The Orc Forge (347 pieces, about $40) Lego Shop.com

A Draft is where several copies of the same set are opened (sealed sets only, please), sorted into individual piles of unique shape or color, and each player (in turn – determined by lots) takes one pile for their own.

To participate you’ll need to bring one (or more*) unopened copy of the official Draft set(s). Everyone cooperates to sort all the pieces into piles of like elements. Players discuss combinations(1) and separations(2), draw lots and, in order, pick up the pile they want. Play continues until all pieces are claimed. At the end of each draft cycle the draft order reverses (1-2-3-4-5-5-4-3-2-1-1-2…).

* Multiple copy drafting is at the discretion of the Draft Coordinator.

(1) Combinations – Elements are often paired or naturally ‘go’ with others. It is common to combine these elements into groupings. It is also usual that the combined groups are then divided into the number of lots equal to the number of pieces combined. Example: A pair of left and right wedge pieces. The lefts are combined with the rights and two (equal sized) lots are formed. Each (new) lot contains both L and R parts. This can be used for any combination of parts – Minifigs (legs/torso/head/etc.), wheels/tires, ball/sockets, etc.

(2) Separations – Sometimes a part has a high quantity in a set (say 5 or 10 per set). Discussion is opened to separate very large lots into smaller, multiple (evenly sized) lots. This allows more people to get some of that part. Also, there are some very desirable parts in a set that “everyone” wants. This type of part may be separated into multiple lots if the group agrees. The extreme on this is where “Everyone just keep THIS part.”

You provide set(s). Unlimited participation. No need to sign up."

We drew black axle lengths(shortest axle picked last) to determine the picking order with a snake draft: #1 guys picks, then second, then 3rd, then 4th gets 2 picks, then 3rd, then second, then first gets 2 picks, etc... and we kept it simple, for example, all 4(or 8 if you will) of the portal axle and hubs were in one group to be picked at once, all 4 unimog tires were in another, each motor was separate, all of the 15L liftarms were together, if there were parts where there was only a few, then we agreed to place them into a another group...

The one we did at Brickfair was very fun...

this will not be an official event on the BrickCon schedule. but i would like to do a draft. so i'm trying to see if i can get a few people interested. if we can get enough interest, we will hold it on Saturday evening 7pm or 8pm in the main event hall. we need to know how many want to participate, which sets we should draft, and how many sets to buy. i will purchase the sets at the LEGO store in Seattle with the 30% discount. i'm also from Oregon so i usually do not have to pay the sales tax. this way everyone does not need to bring a $200 set and the buy in into the draft is much lower. i'm shooting for around $100 or less buy in for each person.

so far we have:

Bob YES

Eric YES

Daniel Maybe

add your self to the list if you want to participate. and suggest the sets you would like to draft.

i suggest we draft 1 copy of these 4 sets: 9396, 9398, 8043, and 8110.
