z3_2drive Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 I used to keep this hobby to my family and nobody else, only in past year have I shared it with friends. During computer class my friends saw me looking up various models and sets and were skeptical of my hobby because they thought it was 'childish' and probably thought of duplo...Then I showed them Technic-my models and others' famous creations and they suddenly went from "you play with legos " to "You can do that with legos?" and have respected my hobby since Quote
Bricktrain Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Two weekends ago our new Lug had its first public display. My technic collection covered about 20% of the display tables. On the first day there was quite a bit of interest but on the second day I spent more time displaying the working features of the models and there was much more interest. People were amazed when they saw working engines and gearboxes in Lego models. A common comment was do you import these because we hardly ever see Technic in the shops. Some of course had never seen Technic before. I felt the public probably responded better to the Technic than many of the other exhibitors. I dont recall anyone who has seen my collection ever saying anything bad about it. http://lug4x2.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Screen-Shot-2012-07-15-at-6.53.43-AM.png Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 I'm 29 and just existed my dark ages about 3 or 4 years ago. Most of the people I know are very supportive of my hobby, although one of my co-workers once told me I need to get a wife. She's probably right. Sometimes, at LEGO conventions, people ask how much my models cost. I give them an honest round-a-bout figure, but then I also explain that I don't spend a couple thousand dollars on a video game system that is outdated every 5 years. I explain that LEGO parts that I collected when I was 5 are still compatible with LEGO parts today. My models are built with parts that I've collected for years. That makes sense to most folks. When people make a comment about how much time I spent on a model, I just tell them I don't play video games and watch little TV. I think most people I run across understand that people have hobbies, and while building with LEGO may seem like an odd hobby, people are ok with it. Quote
Paul Boratko Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 I found this very interesting page specifically talking about the insult itself and how it's used against creative people. http://xanadoodle.wordpress.com/2011/06/13/you-have-too-much-time-on-your-hands/ Nice find..! Quote

I will have to find out when the next meeting is and go to it :-) . I don't have much of a social life, being an Aspie, and living through some VERY stressful times in the last couple of years, but my family seems to accept the fact that I like LEGO. Recently, I have been shipping in from overseas because it is cheaper, plus there are some cool older Technic sets I wanted to get. My family gives me funny looks every time a new package arrives on the doorstep! :-P Quote
Foggy Posted July 29, 2012 Author Posted July 29, 2012 Hi Folks, great to hear these various experiences from you all and nice to see I'm not alone . I really apply appreciated all your comments and i'm glad to see many of you get support from families, relatives and workmates. I don't care so much about what others say ,I'll keep collectin' and playin' with technic anyway and most people judge technic be4 see it thinking is like duplo or system. As others wrote, technic is not my only hobby so i don't put all my spare time there so i'm not obsessed by it but anyway people around me don't change their mind about waistin' money and time. Anyway i'm glad to be part of his wndf world :) Quote
Crazydance Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 I personally only tell people who are very good friends or close family how much Lego I have. Only because I don't want random people (who know my address) I can't trust knowing how much I have. I can relate to the guy earlier saying they stop making negative comments AFTER you show them some of your flagship models. Some of my friends start laughing when they see the collection but the lauging stops when I power up the 8275... Then they go all twitchy and almost kill me for the remote. Quote
BasOne Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 (edited) I got mocked about my Lego addiction at work a lot till i brought a couple of models with me, 8258, 8043, 8070 and 8110. Now, they don't mock me anymore They were amazed at what Lego produces these days, they were stuck in the '80's i think Edited July 29, 2012 by BasOne Quote

kabelbinder Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 This is my first post at eurobricks-forum. So far I was just reader at this forum, now i'm happy to read about like-minded people - very nice. Up to the age of 14 years i've built with LEGO every day - 32 years later, i'm extreme re-infected with LEGO when i got the 8043 for my birthday. I love the technic theme and today i've got the money to buy LEGO and the time to build and the sympathy of my wife, daughter, friends ... yes, they understand me! Only my mother looks a little incredulous ... I'm excited about all the MOCs and the creators and i've built many by myself. When the time comes I'll post a few photos, but many models are in experimental phase. Quote
bb15080 Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 I got back of the dark ages because of my girlfriend and I must say all of my friends en family are looking around to see if I have something new of rebuild when they are visiting. I feel lucky when it comes to my hobby @ kabelbinder welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy your stay Quote
mahjqa Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 If anyone looks funny when I mention my hobby I just show them what I build. Gets the message across very nicely. Quote
chorlton Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 If anyone looks funny when I mention my hobby I just show them what I build. Gets the message across very nicely. Yes, but some of us are amateurs and should be more embarrassed by our MOCs than the fact we build at all Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Yes, but some of us are amateurs and should be more embarrassed by our MOCs than the fact we build at all How are you calling a amateur........me? I keep the fact I build with technic a tight secret....... Quote
apps Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Most people I know think it is cool, but if anyone did have a problem with it I would not care. I have said this on another thread but look at it this way. How much do rev heads spend on their cars and for what, something that is constantly decreasing in value (unless it is a reventon or veyron) and continues to cost you money everyday untill you sell it. Trust me us lego fans have nothing to worry about Quote
