morris Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 I got a letter a couple of weeks ago asking me if I wanted to join NAGTY, the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth, and my application was accepted yesterday.Apparantly this means i'm in the top 5% of the country academically. Of course, i'm not one to blow my own trumpet ;-) . Time for a bit of shameless advertising: the NAGTY website so which university accepted you? HARVARD? YALE? MIT? Quote
Brainbox Posted May 28, 2007 Author Posted May 28, 2007 so which university accepted you? ? NAGTY is an organisation, not a university. Quote
The Kid Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Are you going to any upcoming events, Brainbox? I'm thinking I'll go to the Chinese Taster Day, and possibly the Film/Media thing. Have you been to any of these? TK Quote
Brainbox Posted May 29, 2007 Author Posted May 29, 2007 I've not been to any, but I may go to some in the future. Not just yet though, I want to get my exams out of the way first. Quote
JoeMI6 Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 Well done guys, hope you can use your superior intellects to EB take over the world ;-) Quote
zouave Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 I don't live in Europe so I don't have a clue what NAGTY is. *wacko* But I can tell it has to do with college and education.I'm about to recieve an award for taking and getting a high score on my ACT.[i got a 18] I'm getting the award because I'm not even out of middle school yet.It was some DUKE tip thing. Congrats to the NAGTY guys. :-) Quote
Brainbox Posted May 30, 2007 Author Posted May 30, 2007 Congratulations. What's an ACT might I ask? Quote
The Kid Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Hmm. According to the latest e-mail newsletter NAGTY's closing down. TK Quote
Brainbox Posted July 19, 2007 Author Posted July 19, 2007 I can't find anything on the website, though. Although I've not really looked that hard. I didn't bother with the e-mails, but does it say any more than that? Anymore than 'it's closing'? Quote
The Kid Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Uh, yes. Oops. LordGalewind Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 I dont think its something incredible to be a recognized person of these orgainzations. Its nice to be in one, but there are many places recognizing people just to boost the confidence of the academic public. They may offer many benefits, but the thing is they really cannot bring you further into what you can do, its just on organization, not a university. It is simply just saying that your smart and thats it. If you truly want to show that you are gifted then accomplish something. Sorry to say but I've been through several of these, and they have either told me things I know, are useless, and dont amount to much. I can tell you, I'm the salutatorian in my class and universities are more willing to look at what you can do than what you are involved in. I do hope you have good fortunes in the future with your academics. Quote
zouave Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 Congratulations. What's an ACT might I ask? It's a test you take to determin what class of college you can go to. Quote
Starwars4J Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 Yes, an ACT is middle-america's version of the SAT ;-) Quote
LordGalewind Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 The ACT is the american college test covering first the multiple-choice tests containing English, mathematics, reading, and science and the writing test, which is optional, measures skill in planning and writing a short essay. Quote
Brainbox Posted July 22, 2007 Author Posted July 22, 2007 Ah right, thanks. I dont think its something incredible to be a recognized person of these orgainzations. I never said it was. It's just nice to be properly recognised. Sure, my friends have always thought of me as 'the clever one' and my marks reflect that, but it's nice to have it stated as 'fact.' They may offer many benefits, but the thing is they really cannot bring you further into what you can do, its just on organization, not a university. Actually, I've not really gained anything much from it yet. However, when applying to Uni, or writing my CV, it's just an extra thing I can add. It 'looks good.' If you truly want to show that you are gifted then accomplish something. Not reallty my style. I prefer to be 'silently brilliant' :-D . But all my friends rely on me all the same. I do hope you have good fortunes in the future with your academics. Why thank you. :-) Quote
