Deathleech Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 (edited) I haven't seen anyone else really do this so I figured I would since it's soo easy. While the Uruk-hai Army set is great for adding length to your Helm's Deep wall, I have found after 3-4 sets it starts to get a little too long. Because of this I decided to use two sets and build up instead of out. Total this took maybe 10-20 minutes to do. I used only pieces form two Uruk-Hai Army sets plus an additional two or three 1x2 light gray bricks. Front of wall Back of wall Wall with minifig to show scale Double tall compared to regular size wall While I personally was really pleased with how this turned out since it makes the walls scale much better in comparison to the minifigs, there was one major downside. Building the wall twice as big makes it look a little odd when placed next to the rest of the Helm's Deep since it is much taller than most of that set. The wall is almost as big as the front entrance/gate area of Helm's Deep, being only 1-2 flat tiles shorter and it's several bricks taller than the rest of it (other than the tower obviously). I am going to use a few more Uruk-Hai Army walls though and see if I can't somehow raise the rest of the Helm's Deep keep a bit so it doesn't look as odd, or at least make the height difference less noticeable and mesh the sets together a bit better. sorry, I would of taken pics but my Helm's Deep is currently displayed with tons of minifigs around it and I didn't want to move it all. Let me know what you think! Edited July 14, 2012 by Deathleech Quote
CMP Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 I'm doing the exact opposite. I'm lifting the entirety of Helm's Deep around 5 studs with rock, but plan on leaving the wall by itself. Yours looks very nice, although there's not much use in having arrow slits right on top of eachother. I can just picture Legolas surfing down those stairs.... Kudos on not simply repeating the instructions, and making it vertically asymmetrical still. Quote
Deathleech Posted July 14, 2012 Author Posted July 14, 2012 (edited) Yours looks very nice, although there's not much use in having arrow slits right on top of eachother. Ya, I left the second one pretty much entirely because I was running low on bricks so I didn't have much choice. I wanted to build this solely from two Uruk-hai Army sets and almost accomplished that if not for having to add a few of the 1x2 bricks at the very top. I ended up using every last 1x1, 1x2, and 1x3 brick the two sets offered. In the end I don't think it looks that bad. Next time I will probably make the second arrow slit up a tad bit more so one soldier can shoot out it from the stairs, and another can shoot out the bottom from the ground level/beneath the stairs. Stiel Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 That's definitely a good idea. I'm planning on using my extra (after the 2nd or 3rd) wall sections to add height to the existing wall and also to the main gate itself. They could use a little extra height. Quote
TheDarkness Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 I'm glad others are looking at this, it is an interesting start. Having received my sets from BN, I'm currently building Helm's Deep then joining it with the Uruk army set as a guide to begin with, before making it much larger and closer to minifig scale. Whilst I won't have the tens thousands orcs used to attack, my army will be a decent size :) Deathleech, I'd love to see a picture of your current setup with all the minifigs! Quote
WhiteFang Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 I like the way you had extended the height upwards. Certainly made the Uruk-Hais a little more difficult to penetrate through. By the way, did you put it beside Helms Deep? Quote
Legonardo Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 A nice idea, however if it were me I would put the second window higher up the wall and leave the majority of the moss down at the bottom. but thats just me nit-picking as this is great. I look forward to seeing this next to other double walls or even better, by helms deep Quote
purpleparadox Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 That's an awesome (and creative) idea. It looks formidable. Now having a regular sized wall seems a bit wimpy! What I'd really love to see is using the set to build up and out! Quote
fuavarra Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 What a great idea! I only have one Uruk Hai Army set now but now I really want to buy more :) Quote

I look forward to seeing this next to other double walls or even better, by helms deep I will definitely be putting the window up higher next time. With the moss, if I put more of it down near the bottom it would pretty much all be green I fear and might look a little odd. Quote
Niku Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 Nice idea, could you take a pic next to Helms Deep set? Quote
WhiteFang Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 Nice idea, could you take a pic next to Helms Deep set? I am also waiting for such a pic too. Quote
Deathleech Posted July 14, 2012 Author Posted July 14, 2012 Sure, I will take a picture of it next to Helm's Deep later today or tomorrow. Be warned though, I am in the process of moving so I have a temporary set up that is pretty messy atm, lol. Quote
Zilcho Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 Nice idea This adds a lot of authenticity and realism to the set and would make a good battle scene, as it makes the Uruks less significant. On a similar topic: Has anyone managed to remove the bulge in the wall piece only using pieces from the set? Quote
Lynx Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 On a similar topic: Has anyone managed to remove the bulge in the wall piece only using pieces from the set? Yes. I played around for a while since I don't have any LEGO parts aside from those in the LotR sets. I used the curved parts on the outside of the wall since they will be invisible on my display. Overall look with Helm's Deep in the middle, an unmodified Uruk-Hai Army set to the right and a modified Uruk-Hai Army set to the left. Frontal view. The baseplate is aligned with the original Uruk-Hai Army set. I originally had it in line with the adjacent Helm's Deep part, but I like this look better. The outermost part of my Helm's Deep, showing the curvy parts. Rear view. I had to make the most of any tall bricks to get the correct height. Some bricks are poorly connected since I just took the set out of the overall display. Quote
The Blue Brick Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 Great build and design. I like the idea of building up instead of side ways. Quote
Deathleech Posted July 15, 2012 Author Posted July 15, 2012 Here are the pics I promised yesterday of the wall with extra height next to Helm's Deep, as well as the rest of my Helm's Deep display (again sorry for the quality and mess, this is a temporary display till we get into our new place and I have a proper display to put them all in). Double high wall in row with rest Double wall close up Double high wall next to front of keep Back of Helm's Deep looking out Side of Helm's Deep Top down of main keep area Angle shot of back of Helm's Deep Front of Helm's Deep and battlefield As of right now I have 1 Helm's Deep, 1 Orc Forge, and 8 Uruk-Hai Army sets open. I only have 3 walls connected currently and probably won't connect the rest till I get to my new place with more space (and even then will only connect 1-2 more before possibly building everything up). I also have 2 more Orc Forge, 2 Helm's Deep, and 1 Uruk-Hai army unopened. I would like to get at least 1 more Uruk-Hai Army set, unless I can find them cheap on sale in which case I would pick up another 4-8 depending on the price. I also want to get several of the Uruk-Hai polybag. Quote
Deathleech Posted July 15, 2012 Author Posted July 15, 2012 Damn! You sure are going all-in on this! Hehe, ya I guess so. It's the only Lego theme I am currently collecting though so I figure it's all good. Rather than buy sets from other theme that don't interest me near as much, I figure I can just stick to the LotR theme and buy multiples of them instead. I am quickly getting sucked in though, I am kind of interest in the Batman sets now after seeing the new Comic Con pics... Quote
Only Sinner Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 You're going to make the rest of us envious of your massive collection! Quote
SirBlake Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Wow, that's quite an army/fortress you have going there, Deathleech. Thanks for sharing. This, in my opinion, is the perfect way to go about this, eliminating the bulge on the extension. I also like the support you've added under the stairs. Quote
SheepEater Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Nothing like seeing massive armies of cute little plastic people fighting each other to the death Quote
