DLuders Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Let's start a new topic about the new (2H2012) Lego Technic 9396 Helicopter set (since there is not one so far). Please post your impressions here. For starters, the online PDF Building Instructions are available for download on this Technic.Lego.com webpage (both the "A-Model" and the alternate "B-Model"): Quote
SheepEater Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 It looks more interesting than the 9398 to me. Probably the next Technic set I buy. I'm willing to wait for the inevitable Toys R Us 20% off sale, though. Do you folks think it features new parts apart from the new rotor blades? Quote
DLuders Posted July 4, 2012 Author Posted July 4, 2012 There are several 9396 Helicopters available in Germany. Has anyone bought one and built it yet? Quote
DLuders Posted July 4, 2012 Author Posted July 4, 2012 (edited) From the link that efferman provided above, "The Mind" posted this picture of the new blade part the on The Doktor Brick Community forum. He said (in a rough German-to-English translation) "The length of the blade itself [is around 25 cm]. The black ends are rubber BTW, is not a decal, but a plastic sheet bonded with the rubber end!" The Mind posted this short AVI video of the 9396's rotor head functions. He also posted this picture of the B-Model pictured on the box: http://www.technicminds.de/9396/37.JPG Edited July 4, 2012 by DLuders Please don't embed images exceeding 800 x 600 pixels Quote
Erik Leppen Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 This looks like a very nice and complex set with a lot going on in terms of functions, and a jungle of levers and moving beams at the bottom (judging by the instructions). It's good to see a proper helicopter set again. The color combination is interesting, but my problem with multi-color color schemes like these is that they just don't work on the alternative models, which usually turn out to be a jumbled mess (8258 is a notable exception). Also I like the appearance of some rare parts like the mini LAs and the 36 tooth gear. Quote
SheepEater Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 I think I can come up with a way to build this helicopter with my current parts, by improvising a rotor blade with enough thin beams. Quote

DLuders Posted July 4, 2012 Author Posted July 4, 2012 (edited) On that same Doktor Brick Community topic, The Mind posted this picture of the new Lego Tail Rotor parts: http://www.technicminds.de/9396/35.JPG Edited July 5, 2012 by Rick Quote
5150 Lego Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 (edited) Set looks really good. Looks like mini actuators are used to lower the rear landing gear?http://www.technicminds.de/9396/24.JPG Curious where the power functions motor and battery box are going to go. Proabbaly in the center passenger compartment. Speaking of which i really like how the doors slide open. http://www.technicminds.de/9396/11.JPG http://www.technicminds.de/9396/13.JPG Edit: Ok, after looking at the main picture in the first post of DLuders, the motor sits in the top of the chassis between the "engines". My bad. Edited July 5, 2012 by Rick Quote
chorlton Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 More interesting than 9398 lol does operating functions buy hand excite u :( 9398 has a lot of playability and obviously the new motors, but from a mechanical perspective there looks to be a lot more interesting functionality in this model. I hadn't even considered buying 9396 until reading this thread. i'm now considering buying this first and leaving the rock-crawler until Christmas. Fun is not the same as interesting. Quote
Rick Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Guys, please stop embedding pictures larger than 800 x 600 pixels. Thanks. Quote
Matt The Tuba Guy Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 More interesting than 9398 lol does operating functions buy hand excite u :( Also he said LOOKS more interesting, and I agree absolutely, the helicopter looks AWESOME! good to get a couple more mini LA's, plus 36 tooth gears. I only have 4, and 4 of the 40's too, so hopefully next year a set has a couple of those. as for the blade, it is obvious someone is going to attach it to a motor and try to gear it up as much as possible, so it is probably for safety, plus it doesn't look too bad anyway. freakwave Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Looking forward to have mine in tonight, latest Sunday night. I will post a review by then. Finger are itching to build it! Quote
Cwetqo Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Why did you open topic with misleading description "Review of..." and then just renders from lego's webpage. I was very happy when I saw "review", but dissapointed when I saw that its just same stuff agin and again. Quote
Wiseman_2 Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 More interesting than 9398 lol does operating functions buy hand excite u :( Not every Technic set needs a motor to make it interesting That maze of linkages in the undercarriage(?) has me baffled... add into it the gearbox and the relative novelty of the model itself and this set has far more appeal for me than 9398 (which I will probably wait for a discount on). Technic Gearhead Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 The Helicopter is the set that excites me the most so far. It looks much more interesting to me and the B model looks to be pretty cool as well. Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 (edited) I've been waiting a long time for LEGO to make a large helicopter, and this one is fantastic. The gearbox is awesome, and it's nice to see the mLA's used for the landing gear. The new blades are really great. I was a bit bummed not to see cyclic control, but since I suspected it wouldn't have cyclic control, I'm not super disappointed. The mechanism used to control the collective is intriguing, and it looks like the shaft slides up/down. Thanks to LEGO for creating a large aviation themed set! IMHO, this helicopter is nearly a perfect set. Thanks, also, for creating another set that doesn't have motors with it. It's really nice to see a large set without an expensive motor and battery box. CP5670 Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 This set looks much more interesting to me than 9398. We haven't had a large helicopter like this in ages and the gearing/transmission setup is more complex than I thought. The mechanism used to control the collective is intriguing, and it looks like the shaft slides up/down. It's a bit like what the old 954 Sky Copter used. I was actually hoping to see a full swashplate from the preview pictures, which I think was doable at this scale, although I do like how it's connected to the control stick in the cockpit. Quote
davidmull Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 More interesting than 9398 ,not a hope ha ha. Maybe if it could fly it would be interesting. Quote

PlaneCrazy Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 I have been hanging out for some more info on this one as I had not been overly impressed with the line up provide this year. I am glad to say this one will be on my list. The fact that the rotor head works as a real helicopter rotor head would is fantastic. Even the B-model looks interesting. As my user name 'PlaneCrazy' would suggest, I am an aircraft nut and I could not bring myself to buy the red aeroplane that was on offer first half of the year as it was so ugly, in particular the B model. But I am pleased to say I would gladly purchase the 9396 helicopter (based on accounts so far). Does anyone know when 9396 will be released in Australia? Jamie Quote
Darth Hagrid Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 (edited) ...Now that's a bit weird. I didn't know this set existed until I saw this thread. Huh. Well, I do quite like the look of it... I'm still pretty happy with 8086, though, so I think I'll stick with it. Edited July 7, 2012 by Darth Hagrid Quote
vmln8r Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Apart form the rotors anything new There's a link to instructions in the first post of this thread. Quote
