DarthSion Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 I'm surprised no one has started a thread, so i thought i would. The first trailer was released a few days ago, looks like, well JC typical amazing work. http://au.movies.ign.com/dor/objects/80031...id=i1hbr02g6od2 Quote
user Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 This is already being discussed in the avatar fan thread. Quote
DarthSion Posted August 24, 2009 Author Posted August 24, 2009 (edited) Perhaps you should read again, that thread is about that hentai stuff, and the M night movie. This is about James Camerons Avatar, 2 very different movies. JC movie is call Avatar, MNS is called the last air bender. This has marcus from T4 in it. In the future, Jake, a paraplegic war veteran, is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na'vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture. Written by Giorgio_C http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/ Edited August 24, 2009 by DarthSion Quote
5150 Lego Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 Though the animation looks good, the story sounds lame. Don't care for the humannoid designs either. Look like over grown elves. The military vehicles looked cool. Overall nothing to great. Quote
Batbrick Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 Perhaps you should read again, that thread is about that hentai stuff, and the M night movie. Woah woah woah woah! Not hentai. REALLY. NOT. HENTAI. to the Brickmobile! Quote
Commander Flash Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 Absolutely no hentai I don't know if I like the movie yet. Possibly in the future I'll be more interested in it. Quote
HumanPackMule Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 Looks like a very cool movie. Can't wait to see it. Quote
darkrebellion Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 Is the NEW Sci-fi movie of the guy who gave us Terminator 1 and 2 so what could go wrong ><!!!! ( ). I am really looking foward to this movie. Everything in it sounds and look awesome in my opinion. The James Cameron filmography is one of the best in the whole industry and they have been working with this one for over 4-5 years so I really expect a masterpiece from it . The story sounds great to me and CGI is one of the best ones since ROTS. The concept is fresh too so I don´t really see how this movie could be bad at all. Quote
nintha Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 I can't wait to see the movie either, the story sounds good and the trailer was great. On a sidenote I have been trying to make one of the power suits from it. I like how all creatures look too. Quote
Forresto Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 Just saw the trailer and woah! It looks pretty cool! Everything looks so alien. I like that the storyline is about technologiclly advanced humans invading an a primative alien species. I mean it's almost the first major movie where we (humans) are the alien invaders. The special effects and animation looks incredible especially the aliens since they are coming up with it from scratch. Very artistic, very awesome looking. I hope it holds up to my expectations. Though the animation looks good, the story sounds lame. Don't care for the humannoid designs either. Look like over grown elves. The military vehicles looked cool. Overall nothing to great. To a certain extent so are the vulcans, so I really don't see a problem. They might look like that for a certain paticular artistic reason. Quote
HumanPackMule Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 I think the natives in this movie look more like the trolls of WoW than like elves(common fantasy version) Quote
Oky Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 New Theatrical Trailer! Man, this looks really good! It's no surprise that James Cameron is behind this masterpiece! I can't wait to see it! However, after watching that trailer, there is no doubt in my mind that this movie will totally kick the other Avatar movie's butt. It was pretty clear from the start that this would happen, but I was still hoping it would be the other way around. Quote
The Crazy One Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 (edited) Let me say this. This film is visually changing, it really pushes the boundries of CGI, best I have seen, but the story is utter crap! I mean, as soon as you see the first 3 mins you work out the film. If your wondering why I saw the film early, I was lucky enough to be invited to a preview with my friend. ( He writes film reviews ). Edited October 31, 2009 by The crazy one Quote
Forresto Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 It looks incredible. I do agree with the crazy one that the story is easy to figure out but still this movie looks enjoyable and entertaining. Quote
hollisbrick Posted November 1, 2009 Posted November 1, 2009 Wow, this actually looks awesome! Haven't really taken noticed til now! Quote
The Crazy One Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 (edited) I just went to see it again, but in 3D, and wow. Stunning. The 2nd time I have to say made me like this film so much more, and infact, it is now one of my favourite films. I have no idea why though, it was a very thin plot. Sandy Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 I just returned from seeing it, and I have to say that the visuals were truly breathtaking and stunning, but unfortunately that was about that for the movie. The plot was very Disney-esque, aside from the bursts of violence and explosions, and there were really no surprises or unexpected twists to it. The characters were boring archetypes. So as beautiful and aesthetic as the movie was, it really lacked emotion and excitement. Shame, truly. Quote

The plot only had a few surprises. However, I love action films so the action scenes in 3D and all the atmospheric moments in 3D were the best I've ever seen. The best 3D parts were the aerial fight at the end and scenes in the rainforest at night, with all the blossoms and glow in the dark plants Quote
Corvus Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 I just saw the 3-D version and: Holy-crap-I-have-a-new-favorite-movie. Perhaps it's because my standards were very low at the moment, as the last movie I saw in theaters was "Ninja Assassin." Maybe it was because I hadn't seen a 3-D movie in a long time, and was expecting the red and blue cardboard glasses. I admit I wasn't surprised about the ending, but I did worry about the secondary characters more. I fully expected the female Na'vi (Not going to try to spell the name) to do something stupid at the end when she was hiding behind the tree. Oh....and unobtainium? The Na'vi had a lot more 'dangerous' feel to them than, say, Ewoks. Judging by the size of their arrows, I would run for my life from one. And yes, the gunship/helicopters did succeed in blowing a lot of them to kingdom come. There was a suspicious lack of Napalm, Agent Orange, and tanks, though, which is what I would have used against them. I have a name for the sequel: Avatar 2: Revenge of the Shareholders. Quote

Haha, that last sentence made my day. I was sad when one character died unexpectedly ( Human in the helicopter thing ) but, it added to the action. I really thought, though the majority of the charcters where stereotypes, that the female Na'vi was a beautifully thought out character. I have to say, she was the best character. I really enjoyed that film, and it is now in my top five with the new District 9. Quote
~Wrack'n'Ruin~ Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 This movie was utterly brilliant. Those who complain about the plot should go and jump in a lake, this movie takes a familiar concept and does it really well with a massive sci-fi twist. Quote

The movie was extremely artistic and the plotline was pretty good. Sure it might not be the most heavy plot but it did'nt need really need one. It had great sci-fi romance, incredible special effects, and good characters. If you don't like the movie you should maybe go see it again, possibly in 3D, and give the movie another chance. If the reason you don't like it are because you're nitpicking little details then you're not enjoying it for what it is. Sci-Fi is having a great year and it's only getting better. By the way if you're going to see the movie pay the extra money and see it in 3D because it's amazing. I was skeptical of the movie at first and I never saw a movie in 3D so I was'nt too sure at first, but I have to say it was WORTH it. Quote
JCC1004 Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 I was shocked that this movie cost 300 million! Quote
Tyrant Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 (edited) This movie was utterly brilliant. Those who complain about the plot should go and jump in a lake, this movie takes a familiar concept and does it really well with a massive sci-fi twist. I guess I had better pack my swimsuit. The plot was unoriginal at best. The villains (aka, most of humanity) were evil just to be evil with no real reason. We have no idea why they want that metal so badly and are left to wonder if they would really do all of this just to get something that is really shiny (space gold, perhaps). The movie uses every chance it has to tell you that humanity is evil and you should enjoy seeing people get killed by the "noble savages". While it was an okay movie, Cameron should have spent the last 10 years working on the plot and characters and not just dreaming up the effects and figuring out how to convey his anvilicious message. The man makes good movies, but they have flaws. Big flaws like all of his villains (that I have seen) amounting to cartoonish in nature with no motivation other than "they're evil, duh". I have problems with movies like this in general. You have a group that is vastly more powerful in some respect deciding it wants whatever the noble savages have and deciding they are going to take it. The noble savages meanwhile have an affinity with nature and talk on and on with the "traitor to his own people" character about nature this and nature that. Sometimes they have a very important message to remember in tales like this (in nature, the strong prey on the weak) and sometimes they don't. Either way, that's how nature works. Eventually though, the noble savages don't think it's fair that natures law is biting them in the backside pretty severely when their typically technologically superior opponents start beating them pretty badly. It turns out bothering to learn things like science lets you make some pretty awesome weapons as opposed to learning how to "commune with nature". So, in the end, the noble savages are hypocrits. Either they are all for "the way of nature", except when it beats them up and takes their stuff, or they really believe they are above that (being sentient and all) which makes you wonder what they are preaching about the whole time. Of course the real irony is that without technology and civilization we wouldn't have these stories that are supposed to make us all feel bad about being people. We would be too busy hunting animals and fighting the next tribe over (which never seems to get played up, I wonder why) to have these stories if it weren't for this awful, evil technology and advancement. Kind of like the Terminator movies. They need computers to make those great special effects but the message is that your computer is planning on nuking your race into oblivion and using your bandwidth to research time travel and robotics. Of course, I am content knowing the humans will probably just come back with nukes and take care of the Na'vi. Since all of humanity is evil to the core, they won't let themselves be beaten by space hippies when they can just nuke them. It's not like they plan on living there. Yet another movie with a happy ending until you really think about what probably happens next, like Return of the Jedi or The Matrix. Despite my complaints I was entertained, if completely unsuprised (the only suprise for me in the whole movie was that the Colonel's power armor had a combat knife). Cameron's movies are good, some are even fantastic (Aliens, T1,2), but they would all be so much better if he just spent a little bit of time making his villains real and not just cardboard cut outs. Or maybe try the moral gray zone for once and not have everyone as black and white. Edit to add: And another thing. Unobtainium. Really James Cameron? How long have you supposedly been working on this (otherwise known as "barrowing ideas from other, sometime obscure, sources") and you can't even think of a real name? I've heard this name used for a material in another movie. That movie was The Core. It's probably used in other movies that I don't know of, but anything that reminds of The Core reminds me of said movie and I generally think less of anything that reminds of The Core.
