WetWired Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 I'm stepping up my customizing to the next level and I'm going to attempt a 3D printed vest piece via Shapeways. ED-209 did a fantastic job with his decal design but I felt it was lacking the added volume that only a 3D torso vest piece piece could add. Initially I ordered a custom tactical vest that was similar to Bane's from Minifig Cat, the quality was great but I felt it wasn't accurate enough for my liking, though the benefit of the 3D piece was obvious. Here's a comparison. So here's my current work in progress 3D model for the vest. It needs some more work, I want to round off the edges of the front, similar to the way I've tapered the lower back in. Hopefully this will give the chest and front a bit of bulge and stop it looking so flat. Comments and critique are welcome, I want to try and finish it off this week and submit it for printing so I can get it back before the movie is released. Quote
WetWired Posted June 26, 2012 Author Posted June 26, 2012 (edited) Here's the "final" version, I've ordered a couple from Shapeways, now I just have to sit back and wait, fingers crossed that they turn out OK. Edited June 26, 2012 by WetWired Quote

They look pretty good.. What do they charge you for that? Edited June 26, 2012 by LuxorV Please do not quote images form the same page. Thanks. Quote
LMB10 Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 (edited) Not a fan of Bane's design in the film, but this is pretty damn cool. Looking forward to seeing the final results! Edited June 26, 2012 by LMB10 Quote
The_Customizer Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 I must say, I am an absolute fan of this body armor! It looks great for Bane and pretty much any other military-like custom minifig! Quote
WetWired Posted June 26, 2012 Author Posted June 26, 2012 They look pretty good.. What do they charge you for that? It's only about $2.50 to print but it's $20 in postage :( Quote
purpleparadox Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 Wow WetWired! I've gotta say, I'm a huge fan of yours. And this is definitely no exception! It looks absolutely fantastic, just like all of your work. So detailed! I can't wait to see the finished product, and whatever you're making after this. Keep the amazing customs coming. Quote
WetWired Posted June 27, 2012 Author Posted June 27, 2012 Thanks, My first idea for a 3D printed piece was actually Bane's mask, but I figured I'd attempt this first as it's a bit simpler. Whether I take a shot at it next I'm not sure, I'll have to wait to get the prints in the mail, which is probably a month away. If they turn out OK I'll think about it :P I really wanna do another mech "job bot" but having 2 kids now makes it difficult to find the time, plus I have about 15 other custom minifig decals\designs I want to do, too many hobbies :( Quote
ED-209 Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 I love it! The vest looks fantastic, I can't wait to see the finished product!! Quote
WetWired Posted July 9, 2012 Author Posted July 9, 2012 I love it! The vest looks fantastic, I can't wait to see the finished product!! They should turn up this week, however they will need painting. fingers crossed they turn out OK, I've never had anything printed in 3D before. Quote
samiam391 Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 The vest looks great. I'm looking forward to seeing the final product on the Bane minifigure. Quote
WetWired Posted July 12, 2012 Author Posted July 12, 2012 Well my 3D printed Bane vests turned up today via shapeways. Not very happy with the results :( The material it's printed on is quite grainy looking, it's not too bad to touch but on close inspection (as seen in the photos) it looks like it's made of stone, not sure what I can do do fix it though, if anything. Bane Vest Painted by Brent Waller, on Flickr Bane Vests by Brent Waller, on Flickr On the left is the painted one with tamiya primer. In the middle is the same but then coated in sand tan colour paint and on the right is the original raw colour. Also the neck hole was too small, not a huge deal though as I just drilled it larger and filed it clean. Quote
purpleparadox Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 I can see why you're not thrilled, but it still looks pretty good to me! I guess 3D printing just isn't ready for all that detail yet. Whatever you do, don't be discouraged. You're one of the best customizers on Eurobricks! I know I'm anxiously waiting to see what you come up with next, and great effort on this project! Quote
Axis600 Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 I got to work with a similar program in school last year. I had to design a piece of furniture for a class. I had to redo the piece because the first time I actually printed it (for lack of better word), the pieces melded together. You have to make the details really pronounced. Plus it may just have been a crappy print job on the part of whoever you ordered from. No worries, man, you've just learned a way that doesn't work. That'll bring you closer to a way that does. Quote
WetWired Posted July 14, 2012 Author Posted July 14, 2012 Well I don't think I'll bother pursuing this any further since LEGO just announced official Bane and TDKR minifigs are SDCC, they look great and I can't wait to get my hands on them :) Quote
