captainmib Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 So here is the moc i have been working on for the past couple of months... A Space Shuttle tribute to 8480. It's still work in progress since October 2011 - yes, quite long. I think this is the 3rd build. First, pic's! ------------- A cute little cockpit: ------------- The engines/Afterburners - these guys hold a secret... ------------------ Bottom - looking (very) red ------------ Tail - the red bush controls the direction of the shuttle ------------ As you can see, i'm not finished. The hard part left is building a proper crane, i've build several concepts, but nothing that i really like. The first tries were done with the crane of 8071 and rebuilding the crane of 8480. But this is a tribute, not a copy, so i'm not sure on this part... So, help and ideas would be very welcome! One other job is installing the cargo-doors but that will not be a big issue. Functions: Landing-gear Rudder Flaps Crane - turn-table and one function Cargo-doors No PF - all hand controled. Can you figure out how?!! Vist my brickshelf for more Quote
DLuders Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 (edited) @ captainmib: I like the red-hot underside of your Space Shuttle! I believe that the manual operation is controlled by turning the (wheel-like) rear engine nozzles -- very clever! Are you trying to keep your MOC 100% Technic? If not, there are Lego 4x4x6 Quarter Cylinders that could form your cargo doors. The Canada Arm on the real Space Shuttle is attached to the side of the Cargo Bay; this may be difficult to replicate in your model since there is not a lot of room left: The 8480 Space Shuttle set seems to be about the same size as your MOC: Edited June 2, 2012 by DLuders Quote
Edwin Korstanje Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 (edited) Your WIP it's looks great so far, keep going on it whit the good work so far. Edited June 2, 2012 by VFracingteam Quote
DLuders Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 (edited) @ captainmib: What do you have in mind for the NOSE of your Red Star Space Shuttle? There is this (non-TECHNIC) 87613pb004 "Aircraft Fuselage Curved Forward 6 x 10 Top with Space Shuttle Pattern" that is too small for your MOC: Edited June 2, 2012 by DLuders Quote

Yes they control the functions of the shuttle. Left: turn and use of crane Right: deploy landing gear Top: open cargo doors I'm trying to keep it technic yes. Will probably use the same parts for doors as in 8480. And you are right - the build is very tight. No room for a canada-arm Your WIP it's looks great so far, keep going on it whit the good work so far. Thanks. Don't own a lot of white. Ofcourse this would look awesome in black and white. (don't own those parts unfortunately) @ captainmib: What do you have in mind for the NOSE of your Red Star Space Shuttle? So only a front cover or maybe a logo? Quote
timslegos Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 The white studless looks awesome. Almost as good as orange . WIP looks cool so far. tim Quote
DLuders Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 (edited) @ captainmib: If you're still open to suggestions about your Space Shuttle crane arm, recommend replacing the oversized Technic Turntable with the smaller, mini turntable (Bricklink parts 99010 + 99009). The large one is perhaps too big for this scale, and is taking up valuable room. As seen on this TechnicBRICKS article, the mini turntable can rotate via an axle passing through the lower section: ...and there is room in the center to pass a free-spinning axle: ...or a Linear Actuator (full size or mini LA): AVCampos continued by saying that "We can have a U-joint, axle joiner or other wider-than-axle elements partially inside the turntable:" Edited June 2, 2012 by DLuders Quote
captainmib Posted June 2, 2012 Author Posted June 2, 2012 Interesting idea D! I got one, so i can try to implement it... Thanks for the thoughts so far Quote
allanp Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Always thought the helmet from the technic darth vader set would make a good ready made nose cone, the cut out for the eyes would be where the landing gear goes. Quote
