harmacy Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Im currently in the middle of building a rather large MOC, and am wondering whether to post WIP progress pics up here on EB. While I see the advantage of getting other peoples feedback and hints to help finish models, there is something magical about presenting a fully completed model that just blows people away without warning (like Anios UCS models and Cavegods Sandcrawler). What does everyone here think? Is it better to wait till completion, or do people like to see half finished models in anticipation? Quote
Brickdoctor Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 I think it depends on how much you've invested in the creation and how good you think you can make it without anyone else's help. If you're going to be purchasing a lot of bricks, I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to post a WIP to help you refine your idea before you go and spend all the money. If you're unsure whether you can create that magical, incredible MOC by yourself, then I'd post a WIP, because I think it would be better to have a quality MOC than to be able to unveil a mediocre one. I think there's also a third option, and that is to privately contact some respected, skilled builders who can help you behind the scenes and won't tell anyone what you're working on. Quote
harmacy Posted June 2, 2012 Author Posted June 2, 2012 I guess another option is to do little preview pictures of portions of the MOC - like a movie preview / teaser, and what Lamborghini did with the Aventador a few years back - just show little ambiguous snippets of details. That way, its not so much about the construction, but about the presentation of the parts that are done, or nearing completion. Quote
charlieboy Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 I personally love seeing WIP's. It means we get a peek behind the scenes and an idea of how much work really does go into some of the better mocs. Some builds on here are truely awesome and it would be great if we could see how certain parts were put together using techniques that I would never have thought of! If you are unsure you could always post a thread with the finished moc and include some build pictures in there too. Either way members get to see how things were accomplished. Quote
purpleparadox Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 I don't mind WIPs. It's awesome to be blown away by that fully built huge MOC, but I also love seeing it come together piece by piece! It gives me some ideas about the building process. I also really like Brickdoctor's idea of getting private help with a WIP. Quote
Darth Dino Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Hi i am fascinated by WIPs of Derfels medival landscape. He regulary posted his progress in a very high quality. But i really dislike WIPs that will never e updated. You will see some interesting photos and then: nothing. No follow up, no update. And even there is an update, both posts are split over pages by many additional posts. So i really loved the way Derfel did his guide by slitting WIP stuff from the talk. Doing a good WIP topic i hard additional work (like a good review). You have to stop you work several times. Then you better post "surprising MOCs" without a long WIP history. Dino Quote
Lyichir Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 I don't mind WIPs, so long as the model is big or complex enough for them to be worth it. A WIP pic of a Vic Viper or other small MOC would be overkill, but there's nothing wrong with posting the "skeleton" of what will be a large Technic model, or one of the walls of a massive castle. If the WIP doesn't spoil or detract from the awe and amazement of the finished model, I'd say go for it. Quote
Aanchir Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Posting WIPs can be valuable if you think other people's feedback will help you improve and complete the model. However, you're right, there's something special about waiting until a model is finished before making it public. So it's your choice. Quote
