88high Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Hello everyone! you may have seen my other topic on how should I make my I-beam suspension. And as i read through some of the replies, i came across saberwing40K's reply, and i saw that he used angled beams for the I-arms So, that got me thinking... maybe i could use them too! So, i gave it a whirl, and had one of those AHA! Moments, when everything fit together and made perfect sense. So, i just stared by building the mount, and working on the I-arm beam connections. so, after making two symentrical and equally-spaced I-beams (by using one shorter and one longer angled beams, and extedning the shorter one on a stud over, i was able to make my I-arms both equal !)So, with the equality figured out, i went onto bracing it (a easy task) and also steering. steering took me a while to figure out, because i have to get the links in the right place, and not have them move the hub when the suspension went up and down the range of travel. my only possible solution to that, is to use the small A-arms with ball joint, and the hub carrier that matches for those, and some 9L links. but my issue as i found out, was that the suspension geometry had to be in the exact center. and of course, that is imopssible with the 9L links, because there is that STUPID little bar going across the link ball socket . So, i had to whip out my razor, and carefully cut off the small bar, so i could stick a axle through it. So, once that was done, all i did was mounted the shocks. And what did I just invent??? The VERY first Lego Technic I-Beam suspension!!! I feel very happy, knowing the challenges i overcame with the suspension geometry, and the I-beam overlap centering! I am also ery proud of myself for making the very first version of this (to my knowledge). So, I just made a short video with iMovie demonstrating the suspension, the travel, and the steering. Also, here are a few pictures (i will put up some better-quailty ones soon): Enjoy!!! Thanks for reading! If i get enough requests, i will make instructions!!! Quote
DLuders Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 If you are not a Lego purist, I think it has great merit: Quote
Lipko Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 I made a similar suspension some time ago, although it was a double wishbone suspension, but with a huge overlap like this I-BEAM suspension. It also had steering with relatively big steering angle. It was a failure though, it was very weak and overly complex for actual application. Good work, I want to see this in your next desert racer Quote
88high Posted May 15, 2012 Author Posted May 15, 2012 Thanks for adding in the video Dluders. You are really helpful :D And to lipko: that's cool:) but I'm sorry it was a failure. Thanks for your support:) Quote
88high Posted May 16, 2012 Author Posted May 16, 2012 Hey everyone! here are the PICTURES ON MY BRICKSHELF GALLERY and a better video of it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=lzE1Ttdd1TI Quote
Paul Boratko Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Was there another thread about this I-Beam suspension? I could have swore that I read a similar thread. Quote
88high Posted May 16, 2012 Author Posted May 16, 2012 Was there another thread about this I-Beam suspension? I could have swore that I read a similar thread. Yes there was, but I wanted to make one announcing my success in making it Quote
Paul Boratko Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Gotcha... So what all did you have to do here, just drill out the sockets of the 9L Steering links? Quote
DLuders Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 @ 88high: Nice I-beam suspension! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzE1Ttdd1TI Quote
Meatman Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Is the steering supposed to not be very practical in this type of suspension? I am not very familiar with this kind at all. Quote
vmln8r Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I think you've done a good job on the chassis; it appears quite compact. However, I find it somewhat irksome that you've presented someone else's idea as your own (not for the first time, I believe). It wouldn't hurt to provide some credit where it's due. Quote
88high Posted May 16, 2012 Author Posted May 16, 2012 Is the steering supposed to not be very practical in this type of susp ension? I am not very familiar with this kind at all. Yes, it is very hard to get the exact geometry right, but I think I have it down:) I think you've done a good job on the chassis; it appears quite compact. However, I find it somewhat irksome that you've presented someone else's idea as your own (not for the first time, I believe). It wouldn't hurt to provide some credit where it's due. It wasnt exactly his idea. The only thing I took from his design is the angled beam thing, which I only used two of the same part he used on one side. So technically speaking, I was only inspired by his design. The rest is completely mine. I would advise you not to judge creations before seeing the differences between his design and mine. They are almost completely different. My suspension has: •a 5Wide suspension arm mount •equal arm spacing •A-arms attached onto the beams •a completely different mount •a completely different witdth and range of travel His suspension has •pivot brackets mounted on I-beams •7Wide bracket, different mounts •1-stud difference •longer range of travel So, with my clarification, I hope you get it now. timslegos Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Looks like a good setup. Looks like it works well to. tim Quote
