General Magma Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 One other thing: my wife and I were talking about these when she said "They're missing their Hobbit feet..." and true enough, they feel like they are. I'm kind of suprised LEGO hasn't remedied this by simply painting the feet flesh... Sorry if this has been mentioned or widely discussed already - way too many pages here for me to go and check. It surely could've been nice, but on the other hand, I don't believe LEGO has ever printed feet before. Maybe shoes, boots, sandals and whatnot on figures like the collectible ones, but no feet, and I'm not sure how that would work since TLC never seems to print the back and sides (with the exception of some collectible figures as for the sides) on legs, so I doubt it would look better than what we have now. The orcs look fantastic but I hope that there will be different variations for Mordor orcs, and the others. Not a lot of orcs seemed to have had hair in the movies, so I hope we'll see some bald ones with ears in the future too, and not 3 times the same orc in Orc Forge. ~ General Magma

Im guessing that would be too expensive and disproportionate in size.
Haltiamieli Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Close-up pics in Facebook (closer than I've yet seen at least). Gollum design is growing on me. I don't want to burn it right away anymore. Everything else is more or less pure awesomeness.

TheLegoDr Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 The close ups are awesome. The figures are looking better and better each time I see them. I am not as much of a fanboy I guess to be concerned about how "wrong" some of the figures look. I think they all look great and I plan on buying them happily. Gollum doesn't look the best, but I can't see any other way he would be made. I think overall he is good. I think his arms seem out of place (too long) but other than that, his pose and face is spot on. The orcs look fantastic. The hands don't bother me, but then hands on the one zombie in POTC didn't bother me either. I like the color variation between the two. I do think the ears look bigger on the orcs than Legolas. I never had a problem with the head on Legolas in the poster, but I think the actual minifigure looks a million times better. Boromir still comes off as Theoden to me, but I think he looks great. Aragorn's outfit doesn't seem bad to me, even if he is in black a lot of the film. The hobbits are spot on. Merry and Pippin are by far the most similar to their actors portrayal. I would expect these sets to fly off the shelves, just for the figures alone. But the good thing is, like someone pointed out, 6 months is a long wait to SAVE! Good thing there aren't any other sets I plan on spending my money on, so these shouldn't be a problem as long as they are available.

I'm pretty pleased with Gollum, but I still find that Aragorn looks too much like Boromir :) Maybe it's because both use the same hairpiece, although in different colours.
Seaber Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 I know it's only CGI rendering, but it looks like Boromir at least will have a double sided head.

Rumble Strike Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Loving the close-up pics. These figs are packing a lot of detail without going too far.
wackyfm Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Sorry if it has been said before, but Sting is a new mold. And the sets are fantastic. I can't find how to enclose a picture in iOS.

Everything else is more or less pure awesomeness. Thanks for the link! Great closeups. Not sure I have anything to add to the conversation, but that never stopped us before: Gollum looks OK. I like his expression on the poster better; maybe that head will be issued later in a different set. Looks like legs are not movable, which is a bummer. It also looks like there is a stud on the back of his shoulders, which would be useful, but might look a bit odd. Uruk-hai - looks good overall, nice shape for the sword, helmet, and shield. Hard to see what the torso and head look like, obviously. Shield and armor look way too plain. Maybe decoration will be added for the sets, depending on whether they are Saruman's or Mordor Uruk-Hai? We can hope. I'd definitely like a bunch of shields with big white handprints on them. Ringwraiths - for some reason these aren't really doing it for me. Can't figure out what to do better, but they look a bit blah. Moria Orcs - these look good. The eyes are a bit too round, and the brown around the eyes is a bit dark. I think they've got a bit too much hair, but that's probably because the hairpiece needs to be a minimum thickness or it won't properly fasten to the head. I think the torso could be a bit more detailed, and obviously, leg printing would be nice. Mordor Orcs - pretty much the same comments as for the Moria Orcs. Skin color seems right. Looking at photos, it seems like these often have bigger noses than Moria Orcs, which is not really apparent in the minifig design. Legolas - looks good, except I think his ears are a bit too big Boromir & Aragorn - look good to me Gandalf - I don't think it looks like him very much. Sure it's a grey wizard, but other than that, it's not recognizably Gandalf. They kind of missed the arched eyebrows, the big nose, and the sad, baggy eyes. His beard is too dark. The hat is wrong - it should be more skinny and pointy on top, and not so flat on the bottom. And the staff is very uninspired. I expected better for a character who, along with Frodo, *IS* LOTR. LEGO can really do better. the hobbits - I think they nailed these. No complaints. Coloring the feet flesh colored would be my only suggestion. Gimli - Love the helmet, except I think it should be more gunmetal colored (pearl dark grey?) instead of brown. Eyes should be a bit smaller and more squinted. Beard seems a bit dark, although they're probably trying to stick with the existing color palette. Axe seems huge, although someone pointed out that Gimli has a very wide variety of axes in the movie, including one that was quite large. Would like to see some more decoration on the axe blades. Well, that's my $0.02. In general, I'd say they look mostly really good, although there's definitely room for improvement. I sure hope TLG is reading this thread and taking feedback, because we're sure giving it!

Print on sides of feet. They could do it.
SpiderSpaceman Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 [*]Ringwraiths - for some reason these aren't really doing it for me. Can't figure out what to do better, but they look a bit blah. They could use a bit of gunmetal grey armor in the legs and gloves department.
LEGOman273 Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 The only example I could think of of a minifig with printed feet. By feet, so you mean toes? Many 'Figs have printing on the "foot".
The_Box Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 I think the issue with the hobbits having printed toes is that Lego has yet to have printings on the "short" legs. However, this theme would be a great reason for Lego to start doing that.
Joebot Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Gollum doesn't look the best, but I can't see any other way he would be made. I think overall he is good. I think his arms seem out of place (too long) but other than that, his pose and face is spot on. That's pretty much my opinion too. Gollum is a really tough design problem. He's skinny, gangly, and spends most of the movies in a squatting position. That is the exact opposite of a mini-fig; they're wide, chunky, and don't have knees! I wondered if TLC might adapt those awful jelly bean aliens from the Mars Mission theme. They were sort of spindly and gangly. I'm glad to see TLC was more ambitious, and designed Gollum from the ground up with a custom body. He's a crucial character and deserves the added cost. What they came up with is not a perfect solution, but it's still recognizably Gollum.
Fives Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 After looking at the close up pics in more detail, I've spotted a few things: The two orcs do have white pupils, but they just aren't as noticeable in the orange and green eyes. Also, the Uruk has a section of white between his eyes, which makes me think that all of the Uruks will have a white hand on their face. As for the hobbit caps, Merry and Pippin seem to have the new short capes in the new olive green color, rather than dark green, like Frodo's.
BTappel Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 PHEW. Big sigh of relief. Boromir looks much better. The other figs all look awesome too. Thank you LEGO.

Yope Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 I can't wait to buy these sets now! The figs are awesome, especially legolas I don't see why anyone is fussing about gollum, I've just watched the three films back to back and he looks perfectly like himself whilst still clearly being lego. I reckon aragorn needds a black cape and gandalf could do with hair going round the back of his head (almost like gimli). However, it does say gandalf the grey so hopefully when they release gandalf the white they will have no hat and a new hairpiece ! Nice one Lego, we could do with a few images of the sets now! ps - where's the cave troll? It's down as a minifigure on the side of the box.
Ash Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 (edited) The Uruk-hai accesories are amazing. A really good likeness of the movie. With so many of them throughout the sets I hope they mix it up a bit in terms of looks and what they're carrying. Given how plentiful they are in these sets I think we're going to be seeing a lot of Orc armies soon! Although the first thing that came to mind is Boromir + Kingdom's Joust = DIY Game of Thrones Lego :) Edited January 31, 2012 by Ash
Angeli Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 (edited) if this was before, sorry, but I was few pages back and nothing ;) closeups Edited February 1, 2012 by Angeli
Artizan Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 elf hairpiece and orc hairpice are obviously different, orcs have bigger ears.
Skalldyr Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 if this was before, sorry, but I was few pages back and nothing ;) closeups Frodo? Gimli?
