Kelmanator Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Hey guys, I have recently been trying to build some hills, like big ones, without success. Does anyone have any tips on how to construct some nice hills- or any techniques? Any help is most appreciated. Quote

JackJonespaw Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 What kind of hills do you want? Do you want hills that are short in length in width but are tall? Or do you want long hills that gradually get taller? Quote
Siercon and Coral Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Here's a couple things we find most useful for any type of topography. Use a tone of 'garbage' pieces to build up the stability. Most high volume mocs in the castle theme have a lot of red pieces at their center. So build as much as you can with red, and then glaze it with gray or green. The rock link is very helpful. We most always use 'Burps' and 'Lurps' in our buildings and coat the outside with smaller slopes. Green hills... I have yet to see anyone do this particular technique, but I think it would be novel and a nice design if someone made a 'SNOT' semisphere hill. The shape (perhaps even peanut)could vary greatly, and the option of building the building studs up and walls/fence studs out is very appealing. I think that would be worth the effort. Lastly dont forget to add in extra detail in the ground. Things like Dark gray rocks near water (as if wet), plants, sand or dirt paths, and always plan at least a brick depth if attempting a stream. For larger hills some people even mix in tan and brown to show the various soil layers in exposed cliff sides :) (Blake's 'Amon Hen') Quote

How do people do the hills sideways? I know about SNOT pieces that let you turn things sideways... but i can never figure out how they make it look so good... Quote
soccerkid6 Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 Here are some very useful guides on landscaping: My link, My link, My link Those have helped me before and if I can't find what I want in those, I look around at other people's builds. Quote
Bjornu Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 I think Stacking many green plates would make a nice large hill. You could also try to make just a very colorful hill of all colors you have before ordering the exact pieces. When you´re done you can count each piece and buy them at Bricklink or something ;) Well, thats how I would do it... Quote

Some good guides there. Gives you an insight into how others build hills. I am grateful to everyone who has replied. I agree that most of my inspiration comes from looking at other people's builds and their techniques. I think perhaps sticking lots of green plates on each other may be a bit...costly? Quote
