fred67 Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 I am sure I can put this across without de-railing this topic completely and I do enjoy this movie. I am making a comparison and higlighting here, is because the killing portion and concept of a lone survivor at the end of it is the same as Battle Royale. Storyline, yes is different. Concept of the controlled environment is definitely quite similar. If you have watched it before on how the killing works, you will realise how similar it can be. Of course, I can list the details of the similarities of both such killing mechanisms and other relevant controlling factors. This is not something 'new' to me. I agree it's similar to BR, but the problem I have with that is that both have historical and fictional groundings... from the real gladiator games to stories like "the lottery" and "The Long Walk," so while there are a lot of similarities, there are a lot of previous stories (and real history) that they both borrow from. I think that's why the comparison bothers me - because while the Hunger Games is hardly completely original, neither is BR. Yet THG had my emotional level up quite high from before the "reaping" until the final moments... and less than half the movie was the actual "games." It's much more focused around a dystopian future and manipulative government, and how someone plays the "game" (not just the actual games) to win over the crowd. In fact, that makes comparisons with "Gladiator" even more valid... gladiator takes down Commodus by winning over the crowd. I could go on all day about what's "borrowed" from what; it doesn't lessen either BR or THG in my opinion, but there is one important distinction: THG is much more focused on the politics (not sure that's the correct word for it), the "games" did not even start until well into the second half; BR is much more focused on the "battle." So the US Release of the DVD and Blu Ray was on the 18th and soon its coming here to the UK! Anyone else excited? I myself am looking forward to seeing the 15 Rated version of the film (Blu Ray Only) which is out on 03/09. Need to get to preordering the Asda (same as walmart one) exclusive with the pendant. The Pre-Order promotions in the UK seem to suck! Quote

In the UK the one shown in the cinema was the 12 rated version. If you live in the UK, the dvd version will be the 12 rated version and the Blu Ray the 15 rated version! The 15 one includes some bloody action sequence! Quote

I don't see how it's the same as the U.S. version, then, all we got was shaky-cam nonsense without any real blood or violence - not that I'm complaining, I'm not into torture porn, just that's not what I recall seeing on the screen. Maybe it's because I haven't seen it in many months... maybe the UK 12 version cut out the after-the-fact blood, but you never actually see anything, AFAIR. I would rather have seen a little more (they could dispense with blood splatter), and a little less shaky-cam. During the final fight, I couldn't even tell who was hitting who. Quote

Some things I just couldn't understand; Why such a shiny bow, you're in the woods, no black/camo version? Same goes for the backpack with that huge orange patch, easy marker!? Also when Peeta Mellark is all blended in with that rock, how can he do that. Makes no sense. There should've been more 'survival trap kills'; dead fall full of spiky sticks, impalling snares etc. No fire 'coal' element during the game? As it was all hyped up. 'Hunger' games, I haven't seen them eating grubs Ray Mear's style. The end seemed to be rushed, no kill cams of the last couple of kills. So 'meh'. Quote

I can get over that though, but the total lack of violence and bloody battles was disappointing. Especially when Thresh is meant to hit Clove with a rock, whereas in the film he simply takes to whacking her against a wall in a boring way... Quote
