mobi Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Can someone please explain what features are missing from 9397 which are there in 8258? From YouTube videos I gather that both have very similar crane operation. But 8258 wins on one more axle, pair of extra outriggers and XL motor instead of M motor. I wanted to buy 8258 but missed so I wonder whether 9397 is an equivalent purchase Ebay price for 8258 is twice as much of 9397 price in shops. Quote
Technic Gearhead Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Buy an 8258 now at the inflated price and offset it in the future with a 9397 on clearance. Quote
allanp Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 8258 has a more interesting gearbox and larger, more realitic looking out riggers. It has a v8 instead of an inline 4 and is generally alot bigger and more impressive looking. It also has a telescopic boom section, although it's worked by a control knob that is right next to it so that's hardly a technical function. It also has 4 wheel steering, is alot heavier and built stronger with 8 of those 5x7 and 3 of those 5x11 frames. It's also more densly packed with gears and mechanisms with very few empty spaces. Technic Gearhead Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Basically, the 8258 is a beast and you're going to want one! Quote
mobi Posted March 7, 2012 Author Posted March 7, 2012 After watching all the 8258 and 9397 clips on YouTube, I do think that 8258 is somewhat better compared to 9397. However, I am not going to pay absurd price for 8258. The 9397 is offering almost all functions of 8258 and it is now available in shops. So, I'll probably go for 9397. In addition, 9397's B model seems quite good too. Quote
davidmull Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 I'm not sure why people are even comparing these sets,8258 is a flagship model, way better with more complex and more parts. Quote
Bricktrain Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Most of the parts in these sets are quite common, build up your collection from available sets on sale, and then build them from parts, buying just a few from Bricklink to complete them. Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 I do prefer the logging trucks's crane (9397) it is much stronger than the truck cranes (8258) athough this can be improved quite easily. If you can i would get the truck crane while you can, bricklink do sell the sets but thay are sometimes quite expensive for a 'MISB'. I believe that I started the comparison in another thread. They are certainly not equivalent, but I brought up the comparison because of you were to list the complete set of features of each, it is almost the same. So from a functional standpoint it is useful to compare the way the same functions are implemented. It is also interesting to note that a mid-year set is almost as complicated as a flagship was a couple of years ago. Makes you wonder what might be coming up for even more complex flagships in the future. Quote

I was wondering how hard that would be. Would it be a good idea to just buy a giant lot of legos, how hard would it be to get every piece? Quote
mobi Posted March 8, 2012 Author Posted March 8, 2012 I think there are some sites (Peeron?) where you can select what sets you have and it will calculate what parts are missing if you you try to build another set which you don't own. Quote
