xtremegoogler Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Came across this review of the ninjago theme on bliptv: http://blip.tv/familiar-faces/cheap-damage-lego-ninjago-5944077 Don't know who made it, but it explains the whole theme rather well in under ten minutes. Quote
pawcanada Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 The video was made by Chad Roco, aka CR. He's both an artist on DeviantART and a Web Critic on That Guy With the Glasses. I happen to be a fan of him as both an artist and a critic (his main video series, Familiar Faces, is about lesser known side characters from TV shows, films, comics etc. and is quite fascinating). I should mention his style is similar to other such web critics like That Guy With The Glasses/The Nostalgia Critic, The Spoony One and Linkara (i.e. cut away gags, in jokes, parodies etc.) so the humour may not appeal to everyone if you're familiar with the work of such people. I do agree with what he says about Ninjago in sense of it being a spin top game and costing perhaps a bit too much (though I am more interested in the figures than I am the game). Quote

I'm more interested in the building sets and figures than I am in the game as well, but having gotten a couple of spinners anyway I can vouch for the game being fairly awesome in its own right. Maybe not up most AFOLs' alley, but certainly a better attempt at a LEGO-integrated card game than that of Orient Expedition or Knight's Kingdom II. Quote
SirSven7 Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 I really liked the little video he remineded me of Yahtzee from zero-punctuation. still I am not a fan of the game Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 That was a brilliant video, I didn't know all that about Ninjago. Now I want some, and I think I even like the game. Let's just say it is slightly more sophisticated the throwing bricks at each other whilst being drunk. Quote
Lyichir Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Alright, I finally watched the video (hadn't gotten a chance before). It gives a pretty fair review of the game. I'm not going to deny that there are a number of flaws, but I would argue that, since the videographer was reviewing it primarily in the context of RPG-style games, it obviously wouldn't be found 100% to their liking. The spinner aspect is one of the primary elements of the game, so skillful spinning plays just as important a role as the weapons and cards. Quote

That's true, especially with today's "scroll cards" that essentially instruct you to set up a minigame for your spinners. That makes it so that it's no longer just a matter of knocking your opponent off his or her spinner. You have to actually have some skill (or luck) at making the spinner go where you want it to go and do what you want it to do. Quote
just2good Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 (edited) Yes! CR is getting some recognition! I think it was a great review. I always liked his 'Cheap Damage' and 'Familiar Faces' series. I'm just curious how he found the old Ninjago spinners for $3 at Walmart. Edited May 8, 2012 by just2good Quote

I passed up on most of the spinners last year, but $3 is hard to beat. Quote
