dwarf-brik Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 So, I am expecting a bit of a windfall in cash soon, and I have decided to allocate some of it to spend on parts for castle MOCs. The only problem is, I cannot seem to settle on the pieces I should pick up on BL-I know I need a LOT more light bley 1x2 bricks, as well as 1x1s, 1x3's, etc. etc. But, what else should I purchase? Sloped bricks for roofs, cheese slopes, flags? Looking forward to some ideas! dwarf-brik Quote
glenpinpat Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 I would get 2x4x3 slopes for making the castle mounts as well as hard to get colours. Quote
soccerkid6 Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 I use a lot of inverted slopes, but you definitely can't have to many basic bricks. Some 1x1 modified brick with stud and 1x2 tiles can add some nice texture. Quote
maydayartist Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 Hello, many normal bricks of course, but tiles and plates too. And to set them in a good position specials like: headlight bricks, and the new one with 1 or 2 studs on the side. For example greetings Phil Quote
dwarf-brik Posted February 25, 2012 Author Posted February 25, 2012 Keep the tips coming! They are really helping. Also, as an aside, I went shopping on BL for Light Bley 1x2 bricks, and WOW are they pricey! $0.10 per piece, at the cheapest. This may seem like an overreaction, but I found Reddish Brown 1x2s for $0.05 each. I guess it is down to the old supply and demand conundrum. Quote
BTappel Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 Personally I would just go with multiples of the new joust set. Not too pricey, there are no panels, a nice mix of castle pieces (color and type), and a falcon knight to boot! Quote
brickmack Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 Can't have too many basic bricks, lots of slopes (Especially if you want rocky stuff), plates, tiles, and generally a lot of bleys/greys and probably browns. 1x1 round plates are also used a lot as stones and such, especially on the walls of buildings (like in this), so if you plan on using that technique, get a lot. SNOT parts are also helpful for angling parts. And (at least if you plan on making anything really big) a large bank account. Quote
StuBoy Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Don't forget to get a bit of variety of colours - Dark Bley and Black, Tan, Brown - all make the MOC a bit more interesting. Especially use contrasting colours for inverse slopes or pillars etc. Also don't forget windows and doors, torches and flags, roof slopes... Quote
Angeli Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 (edited) A lot of 1x2 and 1x1 brick. Only a hand full of other bricks (1x3 etc), you do not need them, only few for "special" bindings :) (like 1x16) Edit: you have them on bricklink for 0.01e - blue, red, yellow and black - that is why all my castles are black and red :)) Slope, inverted slope and brick arch - crucial for castle:) Plates 1x2 and 1x1 (and again, just a handful of others); and some "covering" plates (best are 4x6 - because of covering area, price and availability Everything else is a makeup, this is building material. And you do not have to have a lot of makeup ;) Other types of slope (like cheese slopes), trans bricks and plates, round plates 1x1 etc are good for windows, decoration and stone imitation :) Edited February 26, 2012 by Angeli Quote
NiceMarmot Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 2x4, 2x2, 2x3, 2x6, 2x8, 1x3, 1x2, and 1x1 bricks in whatever color you want (I use light bley and tan). Light bley is expensive on BL; see if you can find it at the PAB wall of the LEGO Store instead. I don't know the ratios. Obviously 2x4s are the most used. But I'm always amazed at how many 2x2s and 2x3s I use; maybe 1/3 to 1/4 of the number of 2x4s Arched window frames and lattice window inserts 1x4 arches to go over the window frames 1x6x2 arches to go over the doorways Inverted slopes: 2x2 and 1x2s. Probably 1/4 as many 1x2s as 2x2s. I use these to make the crenellations on top of the wall stick out 1 stud from the wall. 1x1 bricks with stud 1x1 bricks with horizontal clip, for holding torches, as well as supporting doors Door 1x4x6 with round top and window (64390) 6x8 plates (or 6 x anything) for the walkway at the top of the walls Tiles, if you want the tiled look instead of exposed studs, or if you want to have SNOT tiles for texture on your walls Slopes for roofs. You'll need a ton. A combination of angles looks the best. Mostly 45 degrees, but some of the 33 and 75 variety are nice too. Or you could just design a castle in LDD and then look at the parts list (via the WantedBricks or LDD Manager tools). Quote

Yeah, anything Bley goes for tons on BL-sadly, that is my only place to buy them, as the closest PAB is about a 10 hour drive away. Geeze, even the local wal-mart sucks-they carried NO Kingdoms last year, and they only stock 3 of the new Ninjago sets-the 3 most expensive ones... Thanks for all the input, guys! You are making my wallet quiver in fear. dwarf Quote
Vindicare Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I'm surprised nobody has suggested plants yet. Flower stems, those classic "leaf" pieces(can't remember what the name is), bit big and small ones. Those 3 leaf pieces that you can attach flower stems on top of. For me, a good landscape in Castle MOCs makes a big difference in how the display looks. Earth tones would also be good colors to look for. Greys, browns, tans, greens, blues(dark and light of all colors, of course). A good list of accessories would be torches, flags/poles, shields, weapons(for armory). I'd just take a look at the Guilds sub forum to get other ideas. Quote
JackJonespaw Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 A lot of light and dark grey. Include 1 x 1 x 2 slopes, bricks, plants, and small decorations such as minifig parts or animals. Quote
