Bart Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Hello peoples, Last week I was fooling around in LDD, and tried to (not for the first time) to make a dragon. Unlike most others this attempt didn't look that horrible. Finally proportions of the head seemed to match up. The jaw is locked it isn't put on hinges but is angled via studs. It cannot close any further because of the teeth. it can open one or two millimetres more at most. After I extend the head to wards were it connects to the neck I had a good look at a lot of pictures on the web. And found that the connection is shielded by flaps (ears?) working as a sort of collar. So I added those to hide the difficult part of head-neck attachment. As for the neck I want it to be able to move. Or fixate in a pose. So thats not very easy. My first attempt came up with this; As you can see the neck is way to thin. So that has to change. But that may not certainly be a bad thing because when its bigger you have more options to make a scale look. Not quit thought of how to do that though. I am aware of the fact that in real live I might have some gravity problems with my design, but there is not much I can do about it at the moment. If there in the future is a change to build this in real bricks that are problems for that time. thank you, Bart PS: are there any other moc dragons around? I can't seem to find them, and I could use something to have a spy on to see how others worked around some problems. Quote
CptMugwash Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Hey Bart, great moc, I love dragons but have to try and make one, yours looks awesome, I agree about the neck being a bit small but you can always add more to it, as for the weight issue I've seen alot of mocs use these for support A more recent cool dragon would be Stormbringer's Toxicrill here on EB, but it's a bit small compared to yours, I done a quick search on google and there's a few dragons on there similar in size. Hope this helps. Quote
JackJonespaw Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 This looks nice. I would buff up the neck, but other than that, it looks good. Quote
Bart Posted February 28, 2012 Author Posted February 28, 2012 Designed a new neck; an octagonal ring design, which has a 'spine'. As you can see I also experimented with the colours, nice thing about LDD two clicks and you have a different look. What do you think? I extend the spine back a bit. The spine can hinge alternating up/down and left/right. Ball-joints take up to much space in my opinion. And is a bit difficult transition from Technic rounded parts to plates and bricks Also to have a visualisation about size I added some Technic-beams wings. those Technic parts are not the definite design. But the shape is how I want them. I think they need to scale up even more. But maybe build the body first to judge on that. And another view. Tell me what you think, please. Bart Quote
CptMugwash Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 The neck definately looks better and I like the studs showing because it looks like scales and I'm digging the colour, I'd say do body first, the spine looks good too. What kind of dragon will this be? a traditional one with 4 limbs and wings or a wyvern with 2 legs and wings? Quote
Khorne Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Nice work on that second version of the dragon. You asked for any good examples of big Lego dragons. Well, I believe the dragons from the Chronicles of Ikros are some of the best ones I've seen floating around. Maybe they can help inspire you . Quote
Bart Posted February 29, 2012 Author Posted February 29, 2012 I hope to pull of the traditional type. so 4 limbs 2 wings and a tail ;) Thanks for the link to the Chronicals of Ikros. they indeed have some very nice dragons in that story. but the story itself is also pretty good. I'm definitely going to read it fully. Bart Quote
