LaForge Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 (edited) Hi, after reading here for a while I decided it is time to start my own creation. Inspired by the gazillion of fantastics buildings I've seen here I wanted to create a modular apartment building. It took my a while to familiar myself with LDD but finally I got the hang out of it and started with my creation. Unfortunately I can not post links, so we have to live with plain text urls. The front and the back. Use this for the LDD-File http://www.hpdoelle.de/Lego/Modular_Appartment_Building.lxf[ Please let me know what you think about it. Ecclesiastes Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 (edited) That's pretty impressive! You can use the button insert image when you post. But first try the resize the pictures, they are pretty big! Edited February 22, 2012 by Ecclesiastes Quote
BrickBox Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 (edited) Very nice row of appartment buildings, they look like they could be standing in my own neighbourhood. I guess on the images you've put four identical buildings side by side, or is it all one building as a whole? Did you also do interiors? Edited February 22, 2012 by BrickBox Quote

The are really modular buildings on 2 16x32 plates (32x32) side by side. As for the interior, I only did the stairwell in terms of handrails und stairs. The rest is pretty much without any interiors except floor plates. I'm thinking about building at least one house. Depending on how it works I probably will do interior. Mr Copperhead Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Very nice! That would be quite impressive to see built. Quote
Dakar A Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Wow! That's an amazing rendition of an apartment complex. I especially like how you have all of the windows with awnings. If this was to be built in real bricks, would these each be seperate units, or would it be one gigantic, solid building? Great job, and welcome to Eurobricks! Dakar Quote

Each floor can be removed. 1st floor http://www.hpdoelle.de/Lego/Modular_Appartment_Building_1st_floor.lxf nth floor http://www.hpdoelle.de/Lego/Modular_Appartment_Building_nth_floor.lxf roof http://www.hpdoelle.de/Lego/Modular_Appartment_Building_Roof.lxf Quote
The Dutch Guy Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Very nice apartment buildings. They look a lot like the apartments build in Germany just after the war. You can't come to a large German town and not seeing apartment buildings like these. Would love to see you do some interiors to. Quote
Brickmamba Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Nice modular but you wouldn't want 4 in a row like that do you, too repetitive in my opinion Quote
streifen Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Nice Block of Apartments! shuold be quite costly if u build it. u gotta have the interior done up and occupied. that will inject plenty of life into the building!. Quote
LaForge Posted February 23, 2012 Author Posted February 23, 2012 Thanks for the feedback so far. I will try to create an interior database (actually templates for LDD) which would make it much easier to decorate. As soon as I have some basics I let you know and share my decorations. Quote
Henchmen4Hire Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 My only suggestion is to make Groups in LDD to separate the floors easier, as is it's a huge hassle to see the insides of the buildings. Separate LDD files for the separate floors is a clunky solution Anyway, looks frikkin' cool, amazing what can be done with LEGO! Quote

I have tried to group levels together, but (at least on my mac) there is no difference. If i klick at one brick inside a group, only this particular brick is selected and not the complete group. This is the reason for me to separate each level into individual files. Quote

You have to go to the groups tab and select the group there. This is how it is supposed to work, so that you can still select individual bricks where necessary. Quote
woolie Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 I tried large models like this using LDD but gave up, because the group system was too clunky and awful to use. I use BrickSmith, which is an MLCad/LDraw compatible designer for Mac. I put each major component into a sub model, and can view/edit that section independently from the rest of the model. Also, can use multiple references to submodels, so items that are repetitive I can design once and then clone. Quote

BrickBrackBlock Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Amazing! Try imagining the price though. Quote
LaForge Posted March 5, 2012 Author Posted March 5, 2012 (edited) @wollee, I've tried Bricksmith, unfortunately it does not work as smooth as LDD. @AwesomeTaylor, next weekend I will group my model and upload the new files. @BrickBrackBlock, too bad that "design by me" is no longer working, otherwise I could easily figure out the price. Star2705 Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Wow, this is fantastic! I like top floor the most. It would look great built with real bricks. And with interior... although I believe you'd need a mountain of bricks! :) I wish there was a little more greenery around, like a bit wider street with a row of trees in front... Quote
woolie Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 It's not as smooth, and it is more difficult to use. But I find it's actually usable. And it doesn't delete bricks from release to release. Quote
LaForge Posted March 9, 2012 Author Posted March 9, 2012 I gave Bricksmith a good tryout but it is not "my" program. Even with all the benefits over LDD it does not "feal" right. Quote
