kasmca Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 (edited) Hi There, I'm new here but am building my lego city on top of my pool table. I have a 4' x 8' area to work with and the following sets: 10185 Modular Green Grocer 10197 Modular Fire Brigade 10211 Modular Grand Emporium 10218 Modular Pet Shop 6754 Family Home 5891 Apple Tree House 7641 City Corner 7939 Cargo Train 7937 Train Station 7936 Level Crossing 7499 Flexible and Straight Tracks also have the following space sets from the 1980's but probably won't include them: 6950, 6970, 6980 also all baseplates shown are either owned or ordered I'd appreciate comments or suggestions on my layout. Also any suggestions on other sets that would compliment the layout? Here are some of my wants in the layout: I wanted complete loops for the train track I wanted the sets to be relatively close to the edge so my kids be able to reach them to play with them I wanted a water area Link to Bluebrick bbm file: here UPDATE: 2013 02 New layout: Update 2015 01: running out of room so my residences have been given the boot. I am thinking of expanding the platform to give 6 x 9.5 tiles (32x32). Edited January 29, 2015 by kasmca Quote
Vindicare Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 (edited) Well, I'd say you've got a great start. I like the way the buildings are positioned. Except for maybe the houses, but given the space restrictions, it works. Edited January 22, 2012 by Legocrazy81 Quote
KeepLeft Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I like the way you have incorporated some of the classic space sets. I would maybe place the blue plates vertically so they form a river and maybe some small bridges for the tracks to go over. I still have not figured the final layout for my town so keep rearranging. tbroyd Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Looks like a great start to me The best thing to do would be to lay it all out for real and see how it looks in real life. Let us know how thing progress (and it would be great to see some photos if possible) Quote
Capn Frank Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Are you able to take pictures of the layout you have done so far? Quote
Vindicare Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I remember growing up, I'd use our pool table for everything BUT pool. It would work as a great LEGO table. Quote
kasmca Posted January 25, 2012 Author Posted January 25, 2012 Why is train track floating on water? Yeah, I'm struggling to get a water feature into the layout. If you have ideas, please share. Quote
rriggs Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Looks good. A couple of suggestions: 1. I always think it's nice with a town layout to have an exit route. A piece of road that goes off the edge of the layout. You can imagine that this is the route to the rest of the world... 2. How do you drive to the train station/space centre? (Or, maybe you're not supposed to?) 3. Your trackes are overlapping/will overlap the bottom right hand corner piece of road. I'm not sure how you could easily fix this though...? Cheers Rog Quote
kasmca Posted March 14, 2012 Author Posted March 14, 2012 Hi there, So I have updated my layout. I just finished assembling the Town Hall and wanted the main street to lead up to it. I also moved the green roads to the outside and the grey ones to the center (Urban vs country). I kept the tracks the same as I think I'm pretty limited with the space and quantity of track I have. I also like having the modulars sort of close to the edge. I rotate them 180 degrees when my kids want to play so they can pull up a chair to the edge and play really close. Pics to follow soon. gotoAndLego Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 (edited) I like the new layout. I think you should turn the two houses around so the fronts are on your main street and getrid of the road behind them. Just have a U shape that wraps around Pet Shop. Then you could make a nice greenspace/park behind the houses. Use a T-Junction or the curve, the one you had behind Apple Tree House, behind Fire Brigade instead of the cross. LEGO Guy Bri Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 (edited) 1. I always think it's nice with a town layout to have an exit route. A piece of road that goes off the edge of the layout. You can imagine that this is the route to the rest of the world... Nah got to keep it 2002 GTA style: no exit roads I like the revision 'kasmca'. A pool table doesn't have a lot of space to work with, but from what you have designed looks promising. Hope you post pics soon so we can see the layout Edited March 14, 2012 by Lego Guy Bri Quote
lightningtiger Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Can't wait to see this in all it's glory 'kasmca'.....will you leave room for the new parking station set coming later in the year ? Brick On ! Quote
gotoAndLego Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Yeah, I'm struggling to get a water feature into the layout. If you have ideas, please share. You can raise the tracks a little with ballast, check out the Train section for ideas, so it will look better when crossing over water. Quote
Vindicare Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Having a street end in the yard of a house seems a bit odd. Also, the lower left corner is a bit unsafe wouldn't you say? The lane just stops in favor of train tracks going on the street? I like the overall format, the layout is pretty nice, a few minor changes will happen once you get it in the flesh, I'm sure. I'm eager to see the real thing. Quote
kasmca Posted March 15, 2012 Author Posted March 15, 2012 Thanks for all the suggestions. Still a work in progress, but here are some pics: Town Hall and main street. There is a family moving into the Pet Store apartment and a wedding taking place at the town hall: More of the main street. When my kids want to play I flip the modulars 180 degrees so they can access the front from the edge of the table: The end of the main street across the train tracks leads to the train station: View from the end of the city: Beach resort for some R&R: We have a ski resort as well as a skate park. The kids put together an animal climic which serves as an outdoor doctor's office until we get a proper hospital: View from the other side where the City Corner is located: Here are the houses: Oh no! The house is on fire! At least it's not too far from the fire department. That's it for now. Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 It looks great 'kasmca'. Glad you got pics up. I look forward to it's progress Quote
Vindicare Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Very nice. I'd definitely suspect that surgeon of malpractice. I like how you included so many CMFs in your layout. I still think that 10224 looks good with the others. Seeing more pictures only solidifies my opinion. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Very original idea merge your city sets with old space sets! The final result looks great! Quote
