Ok, It´s time to show a current project.

The "Inverted Shuttle Coaster"

Spaceshot01.jpg

Features:

- complete NXT controlled

- 1x Servo for Lifthill 1

- 1x Servo for Lifthill 2 (still missing)

- 1x Servo for pullback system for thze station

- 1x Touch sensor for Lifthill 1

- 1x Ultra sensor for Lifthill 2 (still missing)

Explanation of the functions right now:

- Chaindog is coming down the lifthill 1

- Chaindog connects with a magnet to the train

- Train is going up lifthill 1 until the touch sensor stops the servo

- The train is released mechanical by an axle, which cuts the connection between the magnet and the train

- Train is running down the track, with screaming minifigs ;-)

- In the station the train is being pulled back by a washer connecting to the train magnet

To Do:

- Building Lifthill 2, with servo and sensor

- Extension of the train to 6-7 rows, depending on the behavior in the loop

- Possible Extension of lifthill 1, to get more speed

- The Logo need more space to the track rails

This is a long time WIP project, please except no fast success.

Ok, that´s it for the moment. A Video i still uploading to YT, I will post the link when it´s ready.

It is HD content, it should be ready in the next 2 hours.

I hope this is an interesting project. Feel free to ask anything.

regards Klaus

:-) As told in my personal introduction, my english could be better, so please be considerate.

this is really nice work, do you have a video?

Read my post ;-)

oops overlooked that one :sceptic::laugh:

Very very cool. that must have taken forever to get the track working!

tim

Hey Tim, you are right. There were a lot of backslides.

For example,

I got several exploding trains due to centrifugal forces.

I got selfdestructing tracks due to high friction.

The loop should be a real loop as Clothoid, it was to huge, the lift had to be min. 1m (3 feet) higher.

The NXT servos destruct the structure, because the train stucks on track and the servo still moving.

And so on and so on and so on.........

I´m a bit proud about the status right now, but I don´t want to imagine what will happen with the full train at the top of the loop.

Stay tuned for more desasters.

Today I recieved the missing wheels and the hinges.

Spaceshot02.jpg

Progress and fall-back for today:

- the original train magnet is pulling 5 rows, with 4 minifigs each row, that´s it.

- the train is still running smooth after lubricating the wheels with WD40

- Now I can really imagine how high the lifthill have to be, I think I have to add 1-2 feet. :hmpf:

Next steps:

- Getting the right colors for the train and maybe reducing the weight to add another row.

- Starting an additional support structure for hill number 1. I will need much more black technic beams.

Stay tuned and have fun.

@ BobBongo1895: I like your Lego SpaceShot inverted roller coaster a lot. You may find that you will have to brace your black support columns more with X-bracing to prevent it from shaking apart. If the coaster were to go all the way around the loop, the uppermost section of loop may pull apart from centrifugal forces. Are you planning on raising the height of the big incline to allow the coaster to have enough speed to go through the entire loop?

Hey Dluders,

you´re right, the bracings are still missing and the loop needs more support structure.

In my job I´m working a lot with Prolyte trusses, so I know the importance of bracings very good. The triangle will be my friend forever.

Subject to the hill, as I told in the thread, it have to be min. 1-2 feet higher. Nor sure, but I hope that will be enough.

Hard to say, but this is a failed project right now.

What happend?

I extended the lifthill up to 1m (3 feet) more, but the train is still reaching the half height of the loop.

To get the train through the loop, there will be only two solutions.

1. Extend the hill to an unrealistic height, compared to the loop.

2. Change the wheel assembly to none Lego, for example ball bearings.

Both of this solutions are not in my sense, because in this cases I have to glue the train assembley to avoid centrifugal damage.

So, I decided the hard step and stop this project.

Sorry for this, but it´s a better to stop a project, than to try the impossible.

But I don´t really worry, there are a lot of other crazy things in my brain and for sure some other kind of coaster ideas.

And the biggest advantage, there is big bunch of pieces back in my stock.

No elaborate Lego Technic project like this is a "failed" endeavor. Kudos to you for trying! This Carnival Ride evokes a lot of fond memories at real amusement parks!

I will thank you for your support guys. :-)

You are right, I have learned a lot during this project.

Stand up and watch forward, that is my way of life.

kind regards

I really liked your project; it's one of my favorite types of hardware that I've seen modelled in Technic.

I got to thinking that you might be able to make this project work by 'adding energy' to the passenger car at the bottom of the hill. When I was a child, I had a toy that had this wheel at the bottom of the hill that spun very quickly. The passenger car would contact the wheel and would accelerate to sufficient speed to climb a hill and perform a loop, then coast down a hill back to the spinning wheel. I'm not sure if this is feasible for your model, but I thought I would mention it in case you still have the model and wanted to try it or something similar.

Thank you for sharing your work.
