Ok I get 8466 has a manual gearbox so can this model be motorised while been able to still keep the gearbox and manually use for differant speeds?i know it might be hard to take off in say 2nd or 3rd gear but is is possible to incorporate and xl motor somewhere?i bought this model and am rebuilding it soon :)

Also are the huge tires a big drag on say if u added motors?

Any info would be great .

Thanks

David.

Somebody tried this before.

I think the person did use XL, overall:

-Gearbox would not stay in the gear, it slips to neutral

-Drivetrain appointed for back wheels had terible friction

-Front wheels turned ok, free of too much friction

So maybe it is possible so :)

mbmc137 has "motorized" his Lego Technic 8466 4x4 Off Roader set, and posted 26 pictures of it on his Brickshelf gallery. He wrote that it is a "8466 fully motorized with PF and updated. Now it has four wheel steering for smaller turn circle. It is a very hard challenge to motorize it, this suspension is not for that, so it is not perfect, but very playable." His e-mail address is in his Brickshelf folder for you to find out more. In addition, he has posted links there to three Windows Media Video (WMV) files.

From personal experience, those wheels are best driven with hub reduction ala MOG portal axles or similar. Pulling out the engine and putting in an XL motor does not work. You really need to avoid the gearbox, as has already been stated, there is too much friction and gearing issues.

Was gear friction a big issue with this model?

I had the big wheels on my unimog there so big ;) I just changed them back and now the 8110 wheels look small ;(
