eliminator Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 (edited) I think alot of us had an unforgettable year with Lego. What moment(s) stood out and will be remembered by you for years to come? It can be a build, a purchase, a new theme, anything. As well, what do you have planned for 2012 and your lego hobby/addiction? For me, the following stands out: 1) Finally getting into Lego trains. I put it off for so long. Picked up the Red Passenger Train, Yellow Cargo Train, Emerald Night, multiple Maersk Trains, several train related sets and lots of track. Kinda went "off the tracks" 2) Finally got a city layout set up. For the longest time my Lego collection was not in one place and more of random small scenes rather than one consolidated collection. Now all my Lego in limited to just one room in the house. 3) Finally visited a Lego store and had an opportunity to do the Pick a Brick. Always wanted to do it, but Lego stores are several hours from where I currently live. For 2012, I'm going to focus on my layout and build up what I have, rather than going nuts on the 2012 sets. Probably just buy the Pet Shop and some smaller city sets. More track and PF for sure. Edited January 1, 2012 by eliminator Quote
Ralph_S Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 (edited) I built lots of new stuff, had some of my things blogged on TBB, had models in Brickjournal, and had more than a million views on flickr, but the same is true for 2010 I think the LEGO-related highpoint of my year was attending Brickfair in the DC area. I've been to a lot of events in the UK and a few in the Netherlands in the past, but this was my first event in the USA. I finally met a lot of people whom I'd more-or-less known on-line in real life, got to see great models, met fantastic new people, bought ridiculously discounted LEGO and to top it all off won an award. Next year I'll be going to AFOLCon (in the UK), the Great Western LEGO show (UK) and back for Brickfair 2012. I'm already looking forward to it. Cheers, Ralph Edited January 1, 2012 by Ralph_S Quote
Vindicare Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 May favorite part of 2011 were the new and way to short lived themes, PQ and AC. I really think they both deserved more than one run. Maybe they'll be back soon. Plans for 2012 and my Lego, is to organize my collection a little better. Right now they're just in big plastic bins in ziploc bags. I still plan on keeping them together as sets, but looking for a stackable or draw unit solution... Quote
K-Nut Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 1. The announcements of Super Heroes, LotR, and (hopefully) Phineas and Ferb. 2. The new sets that have introduced me into new themes, such as Potc (QAR) and AC (Earth Defense HQ) 3. Joining EB to make friends and learn new building tips. (I know, a bit corny, but it's true! ) 4. The new themes (PQ, Potc, AC, Ninjago) Overall, 2011 was my best year for Lego, and I hope many more like it to come. Quote
Blondie-Wan Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I'll remember going to the grand opening of LEGOLAND Florida (and a preview day, and once again during the countdown to Christmas), the news of the Marvel, DC and Middle-earth licensed themes, the revelation of LEGO Friends, and all the LEGO sets I added to my collection this year. On the downside are the announcement of the closing of LEGO Universe just as I was finally able to begin playing a little more regularly, along with the discontinuation of far, far too many sets before I (and so many others who wanted them) were able to get them. On balance, though, it was mostly an excellent LEGO year, from where I sit. Here's looking forward to a great 2012! Quote
ibecks Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I'll remember my first post-dark-ages visit to a Lego store, AFOLCON in Manchester and the awesome VW Camper (and the entertainment it gave me and my friends building it). Quote
Brickdoctor Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 There're a ton of things I'll remember from EB. I became an RA Teacher, was asked to be a Rebel Blogger, hosted my first Heroica quest, remade the Star Wars Advent Calendar, and played a true mafia game in which I didn't play like a MegaBlocky n00b. As far as LEGO in general, I bought my first train, the Emerald Night. The snow play area at LEGOLAND California was also pretty cool. Quote
SilvaShado Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I'll agree that joining EB was one of the biggest defining moments of this year. It's really expanded my horizons. I love castle so the Mill Village Raid and the Blacksmith Shop were the best sets of 2011 for me. I was so happy to see more peasants after the Medieval Market. I can only hope that LEGO continues this trend whenever they get back to Castle. Hearing about all the new themes coming out in 2012 was also very very exciting and memorable, especially with all the rumor discussions. And then building my own creations was also very memorable. I've really grown as a builder this past year as I've challenged myself. I'm looking forward to next year as I have many plans floating around in my head. I hope to make even a fraction of them reality next year. Quote
CMP Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Customizing my first figures, and arming them with my first BrickArms order. And my Xenomorph, who shall not be disassembled. Heroica's a big plus, as well Historica, which I've yet to really do anything with. Most of all, learning about the Lord of the friggin' Rings license! Quote
Tamamono Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 2011 was an amazing year of LEGO for me, and there are lots of things that I will remember about it. The things I will remember most about 2011 are: 1. I finally joined Eurobricks after lurking for several months and made lots of great friends here. 2. I played in five mafia games (although there were a couple that I didn't do so well in. ). 3. I started collecting modular buildings, and I made giant leaps with my tabletop town. 4. All the great LEGO themes that have been announced! (LotR, Monster Hunters, DC, Marvel, Friends, etc.) I hope 2012 will be just as good a year as '11 was! Quote
lightningtiger Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Ah, 2011...made a few more friends here, improved my building and decor skills....spent more money on Lego ! The best thing about 2011 was the now and future licensed sets....POTC and 2012's SH and LOTR....my son is going to make me broke. Let's all hope 2012 is even better and not just about Lego neither. Ash Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 (edited) * My kid "graduating" from Duplo and at the same time reawakening my own long dormant love of LEGO. This was around the same time as the AFOL con in Manchester and we were at the museum on the same day. I was really jealous and wished I'd known about it sooner (a mistake I won't be making this year). * We both became annual pass holders at the local Discovery Center. Frankly it's a bit pants, but living so close it's still good value for money as we go every month or so. * The big one was the announcement of the Lord of the Rings license. This tipped the balance into full-blown LEGO mania for me and even inspired me to finally start a blog! * The biggest double edge sword was the discover of Brickset's amazing Amazon bargain sniffing page. Goodbye money, hello 50% off bargains. I really lack the space and funds to be a full-blown MOC building AFOL, but at the moment I'm just enjoying the ride and having fun rediscovering LEGO. Kayne Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 For me, 2011 was a huge Lego year. I came out of my Dark Age in January of 2011, so almost everything was new to me. After about 16 years of being away from Lego, I came back due to the interest my kids found in Lego. I still had all of my old bricks, so that is where I started. However, I also discovered Bricklink this year, so my collection quickly grew. Most recently though, I think that the announcements of LOTR and Superheroes were huge for me. As a castle builder that was in the Dark Ages during the Fantasy Era, I think that LOTR will really help me to grow that portion of my collection! Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 2011 was definitely a big year for me. I doubled my set number and have never built so many MOCs. But the thing I will remember most is the fact I took down and boxed my entire city at my house to repurpose the closet for my entire collection storage. It stood since 1997. I decided I did not want to keep the rest in the attic as the temperature fluctuates heavily. As well as it is much easier to move them when I need to. 2012 will bring my focus to the new city sets from last year and now Quote
L@go Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 (edited) For me, 2011 has been my most Lego-filled year thus far. It's been a couple of years since I came out of my dark ages, but in December 2010 I posted my first MOC on Brickshelf, and after having created a Flickr account in February I've kept building - I've got four modular buildings (of which I've only posted three so far), a re-coloured train, one vignette and a bunch of vehicles, and particularly those have been very well received by the community - which I'm obviously very happy about. I've also been blogged by The Brothers Brick (yeah!!), paid three visits to LEGO stores abroad (we don't have any in Norway) and spent more money on these addictive bricks this past year than I've ever done before (and far more than I'd planned), so much that I'm constantly considering whether I'm descending into madness... I'm going to have to decide soon what I want to keep and then sell off something, not so much because I need the money, but because I need the space! :) I've also spent a lot of time here on EB, which has provided tons of inspiration. Without you fellow builders out there, I probably would have built a lot less. Edited January 2, 2012 by L@go Quote
Rook Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Good = Two new Lego Stores in Canada! Bad = Glued Magnet Sets. Lego = Fail. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 I came out of my dark ages in late 2010, so 2011 was all about my new interest and the new sets. What I remember most is how much money I've spent on sets throughout the year!! I've never added it up, nor will I ever. I joined Eurobricks and discovered Bricklink in 2011. Both are much needed and I don't know where I'd be without them in regards to Lego, that is. My daughter first got into Duplo this year, so that is exciting. Although, now we have to buy both Lego for me and Duplo for her, so it will be even more expensive this next year. I am most excited for the super hero sets, but hopefully the next wave will be more amazing since my excitement has died down. In 2012, I will be organizing my Lego room more, and hopefully MOCing more Harry Potter themed buildings/locations. Here's to a great 2012 for everyone! Quote
PhaTic Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 For 2011, I was able to build great ApocaLego MOCs, and was very proud of them. I also attended BrickFair in Virginia and had a great time. I met lots of people I chatted with online. Quote
dr_spock Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 2011 was a pretty big Lego year for me. Attended my first AFOL convention - Brickfete. Assembled a bunch of sets for a brand new Lego Store opening. Went to my first Lego Store grand opening event. Bought way too many sets and PAB for my own good. Quote
Andy D Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 (edited) 2011 was a fun LEGO year for me. I after building the Café Corner from parts from Bricklink in 2010, I purchased several Modulars in 2011. Bought parts for Green Grocer from Bricklink and assembled the Green Grocer and Grand Emporium. I have not yet had time to assemble the Pet Shop or Fire Brigade. These are not the only sets I bought and have yet to assemble, got a closet full. Yep, I bought way, way too many sets and spent too much time collecting sets and parts for future projects at LEGOland CA and PAB wall. I completed my first MOC (I still need to take good photos and present it here) I hope I have time to assemble sets, MODs and MOCs in 2012 and don’t exercise my credit card quite as much in 2012. Less spending, more building is my motto for 2012! (yeah, good luck with that one ) Andy D Edited January 2, 2012 by Andy D Quote
Haltiamieli Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 As 2011 was my first full year as an AFOL, I don't have much perspective in these things. I will probably just remember how the obsession started to show signs of staying instead of fading away after the initial burst in the latter part of 2010. Helping in this was the great (and all too soon axed) Kingdoms summer wave with Mill Village Raid as its crown jewel. Lord of the Rings license is great, but in retrospect I will probably remember it rather from 2012 than from 2011. Same applies to Kingdoms Joust, which I have yet to buy. From 2012 I presume I will remember the LotR theme, as mentioned above, and the desperate attempts to acquire enough money to hoard all the sets from the said theme. As a result I will also probably lament that I didn't have surplus money to buy any Dino theme dinosaurs from Bricklink or Dracula Castle from Monster Hunters or... Quote
brickmack Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 This was my first year going to Brickworld Chicago, which I'll hopefully attend next year also (And any other conventions within reasonable distance of home). Many good sets, such as the Unimog, VW camper, and several others. Lots of new parts came out this year as well (And new colors). Quote
Xenophilius Studz Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I thought 2011 was an interesting LEGO-filled experience. This was the first year since becoming a FOL years ago that I felt little appeal towards any theme this year (not including Alien Conquest and Pharoah's Quest, two themes which I enjoyed greatly and will be said to see go). I picked up some small sets from themes like Ninjago and Pirates of the Caribbean, but the themes seemed lack luster compared to previous years. In 2011, I felt a stronger urge to MOC instead of buying sets. And it has finally happened. I built a spaceship and ordered parts from Pick a Brick to begin the official rebuilding of my LEGO Town. Also, I got my first Modular building (the Grand Emporium) this year. I now wish to collect more of these buildings and MOC my own. The GE is possibly my most favorite LEGO set and most appealing set to look at ever. Quote
Perry the Platypus Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 1. Announcement of the Phineas and Ferb LEGO game. 2. Unveiling of Friends. Quote
Miss Kyle Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 For me it was the year of getting back into Lego completely. I joined Eurobricks, went to one funny meetup in London and the Eurobricks event in Windsor, made great friends and had an amazing time. There were a lot of great moments, as the discovery of the CMF series. But the best probably was the announcement of Super Heroes and finally getting my hands on brand new Batman sets. I really was in geek heaven, and I still am. Thank you, Lego!! Quote
