Same here. I typically prefer to keep sets either intact or partially disassembled if possible. I like to put everything back in the original box even the extra pieces. I suppose it's because I'm not much of a MOC'er at the moment.

I think if I wanted to really save space I would break the set completely down, bag it in durable zip-loc bags, and put them in a plastic container. At which point I would flatten the box and store all the boxes together. Instructions could be filed away in a drawer or filing cabinet.

Part of the reason I prefer to keep sets together or partially-together when transporting them is so that I can be confident I'm not missing any pieces. It's easier to recognize a missing part on a completed set than in a pile of parts, after all. To an extent, though, it's just the routine I've gotten used to after taking my sets to and from college so many times. Ziploc bags would probably be smarter than the original boxes in many cases so there are no cracks for parts to escape through.

The fact that I've been a BIONICLE/Hero Factory fan for so long, and those sets have containers usually designed for storing the completed set, was probably no small influence itself.

I recently went through most of our collection and tried breaking things into smaller sections and placing them in ziploc bags inside 18L Rubbermaid containers. It works quite well, and I can put about 4 times as much sets/bricks in a container than before.

It helped that Target and our grocery store have 2.5 gallon (10 l) Ziplock bags right now...probably for hunting season and large cuts of meat. I stocked up on the larger bags and gallon sizes (4 L) as well and am using them to store similar bricks inside the Rubbermaid containers by set or color. That way I can pull out a bag with a specific part when needed. The sorting has taken a major part of my life, but I enjoy handling the bricks.

I did the same with most of my large Duplo collection, and it takes up a lot less space. It is very easy to find the set bags each with a large number on them.

I recycle all of the boxes eventually because they take up too much room broken down, and we have no plans of selling any Lego. And those boxes become fire hazards because they burn so easily. And parts do fall out of them.

I do hope that they continue decreasing the size of their boxes as it is such a waste of space and resources for all, and parts shake around too much getting damaged before the buyer opens the box. Great topic BTW!

Smaller boxes FTW! I hate the big bulky ones, especially when I have to carry them home from the shop in the train, and when it's windy it's a real pain to manoeuver the bag . It's good for storage this way, too.

I feel the same way about bringing large boxes home even in the car. They are a pain to haul around.

Above I made a mistake about the 2.5 gal bags; they are by Hefty and are called Jumbo Multi-Purpose. The SKU is

0 1370084314 3, and it looks as if they were introduced in 2011. Target and Kroger have them in my area, and they were on sale for around 3USD. Hope this helps! :sweet:
