davidmull Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Iv built up my collection of flagships the last year and iv got all the good ones,my question is what is the best of the best that I'm missing? Currently I have the following! 8043 8258 8868 8455 8421 8110 8436 8265 I think that's it,it's also a lot of money to spend in a year as even the older ones were misb :) So what's the best of the best I'm missing?im not liking 8275 Or 8285 tho but opinions on these too!what about 8880 or 8466? Traktor Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 I think 8285 is much better than 8436. So you should get that one to. Quote
Conchas Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 You must definitely also try this one: 8479 IMHO, one of the best flagships, after 8455. Quote

Why do people think 8880 is so great,I'm just curious because super cars never have very interesting functions but u here lots going on about 8880! Quote

I guess you need to build it and find out. I don't know what you think is interesting, but to most of us 8880 is it. It was also the very first time a lot of things were done that we take for granted now. Quote

Alasdair Ryan Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 (edited) I would love the space shuttle or the air claw rig,i don't like cars i am not a car fan. I don't buy old sets my self i would rather spend it on parts from bricklink or job lots from ebay, you can never tell what you are going to get in job lots which can be fun, i got some tread with 2 studs and some rather old electric stuff a while back. KEvron Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Why do people think 8880 is so great you've got to put it into context. at that time, 8880 was, by far, the largest technic set ever released. it's HUGE inventory was a treasure trove of practical elements featuring not just one of the then-new differentials, but THREE! it also featured several of the then-new 16t clutch gears, 81.6mm tires, steering hubs and a new transmission shift. it was also a promise of the monstrous sets that would follow. 8880's success was the precursor to the 'mog. allanp Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 8880 wasn't just great in it's time. For me it remains the best car (and only proper supercar) that technic ever made. 4 wheel drive, four wheel steering and four wheel suspention. Pretty slick by todays standards. Whilst it only has four gears as opposed to the 5f+1r, it's gear change mechanism is far superior to what was found in 8448/8466, so much so that I build more MOCs with a 4 speed transmission than a 6 speed transmission just so I can use it. I also think it just looks amazing, better than any other technic car official or MOC (although Eric Leppens Zonda might be the exception ), it's a work of art DESPITE being built from only straight beams and hinge plates. davidmull Posted December 29, 2011 Author Posted December 29, 2011 Today was my lucky day I picked up a second hand 8466 in great condition for €50, i need to replace a few universal joints and one hub has worn damage, what's even More funny is it was a lad I knew that had it,I didn't think he was big into Lego :) I really wanted the huge wheels too,I can't believe how big those tires are! They make the unimog ones look small :) Iv it all dismantled now and I think everything is there but I'll recheck on brick link inventory, I normally buy misb sets but I couldn't turn this down and the wheels and tires are mint :) Happy days!
