Mr Benn Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Having just recently put several of the boxed sets together, I just wanted to see if the things that bug me about the building process really do it for anyone else too... So as it's just after Christmas, we've all had to spend too long with our parents and so a good rant is really good for all of us! So, to start off, I hate... 1. Seeing x2/x3/x4 in instructions after a very dull little build 2. Seeing in the piece call out box 'x32', usually when it's hard to find 1x1 or 1x2 plates 3. Finding out that the 1x2 brick you need at step 45 is the one that you mistakenly used at step 4, right in the middle of the wall that now has a lot of delicate structure around it! I'm sure you all have plenty more... let that rage out! Quote
Darkdragon Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 1. Seeing x2/x3/x4 in instructions after a very dull little build Yes, it would be much better if the beginning of the little build would state x2 (etc) so that we can just build them all at once instead of finding out when we get to the end. I'm getting better at knowing this (by knowing the end model and thinking ahead), but it's still frustrating if I forget and find out at the end of the small build. Quote
CMP Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Spending 20 minutes looking for a brick you're sitting on. Quote
ibecks Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Colours looking really similar. Then right at the end of the build you discover you used the wrong colour earlier. Quote
just2good Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Colours looking really similar. Then right at the end of the build you discover you used the wrong colour earlier. This is a major annoyance to me, too. I usually get the pearl silver, grey, dark grey, and black mixed up with each other due to the instruction book's printing. Quote
Cwetqo Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Seeing up to five instruction booklets for medium sized set, each one sized differently. Quote
snaillad Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 I hate having a 'mad panic' when I cannot find a brick, think its gotten lost somewhere opening the packet or that it was missing. Then after 5 mins or so realise it was right in front of me all along, then I feel daft! Quote
Jedi master Brick Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Spending 20 minutes looking for a brick you're sitting on. That is mine, except today when building the pod racer set 2 bricks got stuck on the tape that was on the box, took 15 minutes to find Quote
Flipz Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 I really hate it when a single bag has all the parts for a given part of a model...except for that ONE piece, forcing you to open the second bag early. (Which means you have to open it up, pour out/dig through the pieces to get the one you need, and then you have to be careful not to spill those parts into your chair/couch from then on...) I really like numbered bags, HOWEVER... The other thing I really hate is when divisions between numbered bags make no sense. Really, Lego? You needed an entire bag for ONE wing of Lightning Dragon Battle? A separate bag for both wings, or a separate bag for each wing would have made sense, but for just ONE? Obsessive-compulsive madness, go! (Separating the wings from each other was justified, it actually addresses my third peeve, I just don't see why they had to throw the first wing in with the body section.) The third and final thing I hate is when I mess up and confuse a left-facing "wing" or "wedge" piece for a right-facing one (or vice-versa). Trust me, there is nothing more infuriating than realizing you put the piece in backwards, making a wonky-looking angle along the side of your build at one point. It's even worse when it happens in MOC-ing, because then you have no one but yourself to blame. Quote

Then after 5 mins or so realise it was right in front of me all along, then I feel daft! Same here. Happens all the time, I hate how in a few sets (I'm kind of picky with this) you have to align the stickers JUST RIGHT to make it look good. I hate stickers altogether.. I really like numbered bags, The same thing happened to me when building the 2008 Republic Gunship. I had about 6 bags of Lego open at once, and it made me so pissed. -Sci Edited December 27, 2011 by CM4S Quote
______ Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Colour sorting bricks is so annoying. I took days doing it last time when none of it was colour sorted, and still have tonnes more to do... In regard to instructions, I hate mixing up dark grey with black, I can't tell them apart in the booklets Quote

It does do that, putting a little 'x(X)' in the small box where it shows the overview of the model, right? Quote
Darkdragon Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 It does do that, putting a little 'x(X)' in the small box where it shows the overview of the model, right? Not in the set's I've built. They all have the xN at the end of the small model. Here's another thing I hate: When S@H shows an item as available and an hour after I order, while it's still showing as available on the website, they email me to say the shipping is delayed and the item is back-ordered. Then the next day they send me an email saying that portion of the order was cancelled. Quote
ProducePrincess Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 My worst annoyance when building castles is baseplates not sticking on top of other baseplates. This is particularly with transfering already built structures on to a base. It seems to bend and pop off. That and not having a brick seperator and having to pull off a piece , friction has no mercy. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 It annoys me to no end when steps are spent aligning plates next to each other with no physical attachment. Quote
Fallenangel Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 It annoys me to no end when steps are spent aligning plates next to each other with no physical attachment. ...Followed by you attaching the plates anyway due to a misread and later having to correct the mistake halfway into the build. Happens to me all the time. Quote
Hrw-Amen Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Oftem my wife and I build big models together. She likes to do the building so I sort and pass her the bits. I get really annoyed when every so often she drops a bit, (Always a small bit.) into the bin at the side of her chair. I then have to empty the cotents and go through the garbage to find a small 1X1 plate or whatever. Sometimes I think she does it on purpose? Quote

Andy D Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 (edited) Colours looking really similar. Then right at the end of the build you discover you used the wrong colour earlier. This exactly my annoyance. But, If have a spare, and the misused brick doesn't spoil the looks I will just use the spare and move on, but if no spare, I disassemble and reassemble. The Yellow Brick Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Finishing a technic set and realising it's main function doesn't work because you missed a small step in the instructions. making you disassemble it or in some cases ripping it apart just to find a tiny problem! (I had this problem with the 8455 Black Hoe took quite a while to fix it back up) Quote
