The plaything rolled by, seemingly in defiance of physics at one or two points. Hoke rose and made his order. "Sorry Hoke," she replied picking up the orb. "I do not wish to harm you, you were my comrade in the cave, fighting the undead and against those mercenaries. I am not corrupted as you all seem to think. I am still Tesni, I hope you will all know this. As a friend, I do not wish to unleash my berserker rage against you." She paused as Cysgodion seemed to pulse. "I am going to consult a mage about this blade of mine, once we get back to the hall."

She looked over in the direction Wren had disappeared. "Besides, to fight now would feed the chaos."

<Sorry guys. I'll spot Hoke my next loot, seeing as we seem to end up on the same quests!>

Hoke brought Vintul to bear as Tesni spoke. Her cool manner and speech seemed not her own, as if she was reciting something she was told. As much as Hoke wanted to prevent this possible and seemingly inevitible disaster, he relaxed his posture. Vintul's bare blade whistled softly in objection, but Hoke slid the great sword back into its sheath

"I will take you at your word."

The swirling purple fire seemed to smile in Tesni's eyes.

You don't need to spot me anything. As much as I selfishly want the plaything, WB picked you. I'll just use it for role play purposes now. We can wrap this quest up. Thanks Zepher and fellow questers!

Haldor caught the diamond that was thrown to him. He turned it in his hand, it glistened like a thousand stars. The pure crystaline gem was pure in form and soul as the heavens from which it shined. It would remind Haldor of the beauty and purity of Jess when they were apart, it was his link to her soul, and the chain that bound their hearts together.

But Hoke had seemed anguished at Tesni recieving the dark orb, and had nearly raised a blade at her. Haldor was not one to judge Tesni on owning yet another evil object, but there was no doubt that she had changed since the dark blade...

The beasts had fallen, but Wren was still standing, as much a demon of chaos as the creatures that lay felled. The heroes had tried there hardest to make the world a better place, and maybe they had failed, but during their time they had learnt more about themselves than any would expect.

Thanks for the amazing quest Zepher! It was amazing, the story was intricate and intersting. I am glad I signed up, but do I get my reward for you-know-what? :tongue:

I look at the cookies and- with nothing better to do- eat them.

I guess that's it then, isn't it? As I look on the battlefield before me I can't help but feel a sence of... irony. Here we came to assist a rise of chaos, and here we leave destroying what represents it. How the blood-soaked ground contains the littered bodies of one-time ally past and present. One-time allys we felled. The Dark Lady Wren still lingers in these lands, I fear. We have not- and perhaps never will- see her end. How does one fight choas? The battles we wage agaisnt it only seek to grow it. And yet pacifisim can not hope to stop it. So how do we defeat such an entity? How do we stop it's growth. The answer alludes me, heroes. Perhaps, it is one of those questions that shall never be answered. Life goes on. And so shall we, heroes. Let's go.

<Legonator, if you wish to eat the cookies, you need to specify what about you to improve (health v. power v. gold). Likewise, I'd wait until you return to the hall... you wouldn't want to use an item now :tongue: >

The Guards march over the hill and view the field of dead Rebels. McColt walks over to them. He talks to a number of them, and explained who the heroes are, where they are from, and what they have done. The war is over.

The heroes re greeted as heroes in the town of Haddon. McColt sets them up in the palace and for three days, there are celebrations of them and what they have done. The people of Haddon cry out, thank you, and the heroes are greeted with smiling faces everywhere.

Finally, the celebration ends, and the heroes must return to the hall. McColt is the first of their companions to say good bye to them, at the edge of Haddon, very near where they originally met with Hans and the Fake Felton.

"Thank you for all you have done, heroes. I am not a very smart man. I am not a very worldly man. Before a week or two ago, I did not know that there was a place named Heroica. I did not know that there was a witch named Wren. I guess I knew, but I never really accepted, that there were hardships beyond my town. I am, however, a dutiful man, a loyal man. This town was my life, my sole duty, my true loyalty. I am the third in my family to be a protector of this town. I do not know if I could have protected it without you. I thank you for what you've done. We all do. Here is a token of the town's appreciation. I know you can hardly accept it, you are heroes, but we as a town insist." McColt hands each of the heroes 100 gold. "And on a personal level, if you ever are in need of a true friend, of an honest and loyal ally, send for me. My town is finally at peace. I may travel, and I can prevent evil elsewhere."

The heroes thank McColt and head towards the town where they originally disembarked their ship from Heroica. Now they must say more good byes. Vipera is the next.

Vipera lifts off and sets out across the Cyrstalline Sea. Then there is just Hans, Felton, and Poletad.

It may not be very chivalrous to say, so I'll hope you'll forgive me, but she deserves what's coming to her! Fare well heroes!>

The heroes board the ship and sail back to Uland. They get off the boat, dust themselves off, and set off to the hall. Just before they arrive, Jess stumbles, and falls to her knees. She begins to hack up the black tar that streamed out of the Chaos Beast of Zoot, and suddenly, without warning, she is passed out. Dyric runs to the hall and collects a Paladin or two, who bring her to a room in a near-by inn. She cannot be woken. In the hero’s minds, a small whisper, a sweet, cold voice, speaks up one final time.

The Side Quest

Please note, these are not all the posts, just the select few required to tell the sketch of what happened to the heroes.

An hour or so after your allies disappear, troops from the village of Haddon pour over the cliffs into the minute valley that you're currently in. They slash and burn their way through the camp, making their way for you.

The heroes congratulate each other for a few seconds as they clean blood from their weapons. As they do so, Jess sees Head of the Guard McColt sneaking up behind Hoke. He mouths "I'm sorry" before whacking Hoke over the back of the head. Hoke goes limp. The last thing Jess sees before the butt of a sword connects with her head, rendering the world black, is Felton, in the uniform of a City Gaurd, shouting at soldiers to stop as they begin to burn the camp.

<Do not fear, we will pick back up shortly. You're just unconscious for the day, wait until your party begins the new day, and something new will happen, pinky promise.>

"...I'm telling you... there at all..."

"Well then what in... listen, this doesn't..."

"..right here, let's ask them, they...."

"But if they're-"

"I trust them!"

"But what if they don't trust you. Who knows how much damage the rebels may have done."

"That elf in there? Jess? She knows me. She'll help. We can figure this out, McColt."

The heroes slowly open their eyes. Vipera nudges Hoke, but without Skrall there is no way for the two to communicate. They are in a holding cell. Over them stand Head of the Guard McColt and Felton... in guard's garb.

"Alright, we've got a few questions for you!"

"They're prisoners until proven otherwise. I don't like it, but it's the truth. They may have been tricked... but still. I want to know about this whole Felton business!"

"That's true. Listen, heroes, I will be more than happy to answer any questions you have at whatever time you feel fully recovered, but first, tell me, and I know this seems strange, have you seen me at all over the course of your stay in Haddon?!"

Hoke sits up and tilts his head side to side, popping his neck and loosening his shoulders in an effort to alleviate the pain in his head.

"If not you, then someone who looks like you and uses the same name."

Hoke holds out his arm for Vipera to join him.

Vipera flies up and perches on Hoke's shoulder. She lets out a little cry and shoots a puff of smoke out of her mouth.

"But... how. That doesn't make any sense. We must get to the bottom of this. Another man by the same appearance and name... this is too troublesome. Is Hans alright? Have you seen Wren yet?"

"I thought you said only one question, Felton. Listen to me heroes, we do not have much time. The rebels are mobilizing... soon. Felton, fill them in on what you know."

"When Hans and I were passing through the mountains, we got separated. I stumbled out in the town, he must have stumbled out else where... I befriended McColt, and immediately realized what was happening. Wren had lured Hans and I into a trap. She had planted information of her being here, but she had planted the information to point to her being on the side opposite of the one she was on. She is not assisting the town watch, as we originally thought, but rather she's assisting the rebels! I immediately joined with McColt, and while I searched for Hans I met a warrior named Vonnetate who made it more than apparent that I could not get near him. He told me Hans was fighting on the right side, and then tried to kill me. Hans has been protected by too many warriors since then, I can not venture near him. And then... I suppose you arrived."

We would have warned you of the situation, heroes, Felton begged me to send out troops, but I have a war to fight, and I can not spare troops to collect Felton's friends, you understand, don't you? But this other Felton today... what could it mean?"

"The supply train that was attacked, where was it headed?"

"It was heading here. The rebels are a bad lot, you're lucky we got you out on time. You know... it's just dawned on me. Perhaps the fake Felton is... well, is it possible? Lady Wren? The soldiers say that they've heard rumors of a witch who can create a copy of someone... dear lord."

Before Felton is able to complete his thoughts, a guard rushes in.

"The enemy is at the gates."

McColt turns to the heroes.

"If you want to earn my trust, and trust me, you do, you'll help my men defend the wall. This must be a rebel distraction, maybe your friends are going after another factory. We need those to keep our troops well equipped!"

"The factories... oh my god, wasn't there a chaos beast in one?! Did... did the other Felton, the Fake Felton let it loose do you think? If Wren created him... and I'm just spit balling here, but maybe she created him so that she could use him to directly trick you heroes... to keep up the allusion of the rebels being right..."

"We'll get to the bottom of that when we can. For now, we have a battle to fight."

The heroes, along with Felton and McColt, rush to the wall, and see a number of troops attempting to break in. They rush down a number of staircases and McColt points to a door that is nearly broken down. He rams his shoulder into it and send the rebels on the other side flying as it comes off it's hinges.

"Heroes, I understand your reserves. You're good soldiers, you're hired to do a job, and you do it. Ask any questions you need, now, to prove to yourselves that we are in the right and the rebels are in the wrong. In the mean time, Felton will get to the bottom of this other Felton business." McColt nods to Felton, who scurries off. "I don't like the two Feltons. I don't know if mine is the one to trust. Do not forget, heroes, that I am no fool. I am a soldier like you, I know to not trust blindly. So ask your questions, pick your side, and then we together, hopefully, will figure out which Felton is real and which is fake." A terrible idea occurs to McColt. "Of course, if our Felton is the fake one... then Wren must be supporting our side for some reason..."

"Hands off, boys," Jess said as the soldiers drug her back to the others.

Jess turned to McColt. "Let me question your Felton. I battled with him in the arena, and I could probably figure out who was who."

"Certainly, as soon as he comes back. Though, of course, Wren was, if what Felton tells me is true, at the Arena as well, so if she has made a double, I fear it will be a good one. What I would like to do is assure that my cause is the just one. How may I convince you of that?"

"Tell me the exact details of what you're fighting for. Money? The villiagers? I want to know everything about who you've employed in your army as well. I want to know who you work for."

"What is this 'Chaos' we are hearing about?"

"Who do I work for?! I'm the head of the City Guard. I work for the man in charge of the town of Haddon. He's been moved out of the palace with all the rebel movement, but he resides in a near-by town. His family is in fact the family of Haddon, they have been the ruling family as long as I can remember. As to what do I work for... I work towards the safety of the town, as did my father and grandfather before me. I am proud to say that I am the only McColt to reach Chief of the Guard, however. Oh, I'm blathering. Point is, yes, I do make a little coin, but not much, and just enough to live on. Don't you heroes take money as well? A man has got to eat."

"As for the Chaos... well, I'll be honest, haven't seen any myself yet. Felton warned me, when he arrived, that if Wren was in the area she'd have them with her. Apparently, he, Hans, and tthis other hero... Crutch? Crunch? Whoever, they ran into one on the way out of the Arena. I thought it was poppy cock until this morning when I was alerted that Felton and you folks had fought one. Best I can figure, it's a rebel weapon, trying to destroy our factories, though I can't imagine how in the world it got in..."

"Why do the rebels want to destroy the factories? Why is there a rebellion?"

"They want to destroy the factories as it is our main strategical advantage over them. As for the cause of rebellion... well, there are rebellions every day in this grand world of ours. These people want power. We do not oppress them, they just want the crown, simple as that."

Felton trudges back to the castle.

"I saw him, my double. Just barely. I was climbing up to the factory where you saw him this morning McColt... and he, he slipped through my fingers."

The sun begins to set. Felton turns to the heroes.

"Now, do you have any further questions, or can we move on to the next phase? We have a lot to do, now that we finally have you here. You were called, officially, to help the just side of Haddon win a war, and if you're not opposed to it, I think you should do just that. It turns out we were wrong about which side to help, but the help is still needed."

Jess turned to Hoke, and whispered "we're going to have to trust him for now. But sometime in the near future, we need to get them both together and question them."

Turning to who she tentatively called "Felton", Jess said "we'll go ahead and help you... For now."

Hoke nodded in agreement to Jess.

"Lead on. I want to see this finished and the matter settled."

OoC: Sorry, no, I just lost track of the thread, I thought I was waiting on you two, I'm sorry. I've had a very busy start to the new year, but I think it's winding down.

The heroes are led by McColt to a room filled with maps and little tacks. It is clearly the war planning room.

"I am promoting you two to generals. Don't have much choice, you see, we've lost a lot of good men to those rebels already. When war strikes, you will be given 125 troops. I'll explain battles later, when we get to them. Until then... well, here's a little show of our appreciation. We need you heroes."

McColt hands each of the heroes 100 gold.

"I don't know who to trust or what to think. The two Feltons confuse me, the war drains me, but Heroica has always been a symbol of power and peace. I pray to Oleg it will remain one."

<And now you're on pause until the second part of the Quest begins. Again, I'm sorry, but also, I doubt it will take over... five days. Five days I'd say.>

...well, I was wrong on the amount of days you'd miss, but from here on in, you won't be missing a beat! :thumbup: Just be happy you weren't stuck out of my quests BEFORE I knew what to do with side questers. The people stuck in cells were there forever, and it must have been miserable with nothing to do.

The heroes wake to the sound of McColt hammering on their door. They have been moved from the prison into guest rooms of the palace. They dress quickly and follow him outside, where and and Felton start to walk. The heroes follow. The air bites at their skin. It is a cold and clear day. Felton and McColt wore their warrior's clothes (aka, finally made their stats realistic).

RULES FOR WAR

1) Assign a number of troops to the position. The Rebels will do the same.

2) You are given a Phoenix’s Smoke for each battle. You will fight the enemy troops, your number of enemies will depend on the amount of troops the guard have assigned to the battle. After you flee, if your remaining troops outnumber your enemies’ remaining troops, you have won the battle. The troops you used (not lost but used total) will be subtracted from your total number of troops. Remember the Rebels will fight your troops so your troops will not be as numerous as when you began either.

3) Combat, in war, is slightly different. Bombs and shields that affect all enemies instead only affect six enemies. You should specify which six you wish to damage.

4) You will have to fight 3 battles, don’t use up all your troops in one go.

5) To win the War you must win 2 out of 3 battles.

Before the battle you must complete the following:

a) Assign the number of Guards you'll use.

b) Assign the number of Captains you'll use.

c) Assign who in the party will carry the Phoenix Smoke.

(Each battle will have a specific set-up, please read them all).

Battle of the Plains - Enemies will come at you in three waves, all equally divided.

"Hm. I assume that our friends will be leading the rebels? I'm not sure what to think about that. How about you, Hoke?"

"I've never led mass formations before, and leading some against our allies does not sit well for me. Perhaps I can send our newest ally to speak with Skrall?"

Hoke reached up and scratched the chin of the small dragon perched there.

"Do you think I have not thought of attempting to contact Hans? What would Vipera say to them? To call off the attack? The attack will happen either way. The other Felton no doubt knows that you are now with us, and no doubt knows that you are working to stop the rebels, and surely he has prepared for the event of you reaching out to them. He will lie himself into their hearts."

RULES FOR WAR

1) Assign a number of troops to the position. The Rebels will do the same.

2) You are given a Phoenix’s Smoke for each battle. You will fight the enemy troops, your number of enemies will depend on the amount of troops the guard have assigned to the battle. After you flee, if your remaining troops outnumber your enemies’ remaining troops, you have won the battle. The troops you used (not lost but used total) will be subtracted from your total number of troops. Remember the Rebels will fight your troops so your troops will not be as numerous as when you began either.

3) Combat, in war, is slightly different. Bombs and shields that affect all enemies instead only affect six enemies. You should specify which six you wish to damage.

4) You will have to fight 3 battles, don’t use up all your troops in one go.

5) To win the War you must win 2 out of 3 battles.

Before the battle you must complete the following:

a) Assign the number of Guards you'll use.

b) Assign the number of Captains you'll use.

c) Assign who in the party will carry the Phoenix Smoke.

(Each battle will have a specific set-up, please read them all).

Battle of the Mountains - Enemies will come at you in five waves, all equally divided. Captains will ride horses, and will be hastened until they are hit once.

"The rebels are at a disadvantage now. The spy says that they have 55 troops left. He also says that they're sending 30 troops and 1 captain. We can send 50 troops and 5 captains now, and still be even with them if they somehow pull this battle out. Thoughts, Hoke?"

Felton throws the Phoenix Smoke, and the heroes retreat. In the smoke and fog, McColt is lost. The heroes hear a roar and a cry, but they do not have time to investigate as enemies pour forward.

"Ha! These are the people you want to kill me?! They're heroes! Haha! Hello heroes, hello friends, I see you've met the other Felton. Ha! Ha. What a fake, am I right? Siding with the guards, clearly the trickery of Wren. Oh, my, you guards really are silly. You think that they'll kill me?! They want to join me!"

Felton walks over to talk to the Orc guard, and then over to the heroes again.

"Gregor is correct, heroes. The guards have left it to you if he should live or die. They do not know what to do, and they trust you. McColt detailed that you were to lead the forces in his disappearance. He trusted you." Felton pauses for a second before continuing. "McColt has not returned from the battle."

What will the heroes do?

"It is not just condemn a man to death without surety. I say we have him bound and guarded. What do you think?" Hoke whispered to Jess.

"I don't particularly like killing anyone. I don't think we should kill him. We could need him later."

"Agreed."

"Felton, have him bound and guarded."

Gregor is bound and taken away.

You set out to rendez-vous with the troops... as you travel, you see a number of figures...

<You may once more, after probably far too long for you poor souls, post in the Quest topic. Thanks for being my Side Questers! Hopefully your joy in seeing your fellow heroes once more won't be only acting now. We're two battles from the conclusion, good luck, keep it up!>
