I have just bought the Emerald Night for our Xmas display to go with the Winter Village Bakery, Toy Shop and Post Office. I want to get a track for it to run around the Winter village & I've looked at the Lego site and contacted them & they have confused me.

What do I need? I assumed a motor and a battery and it would have an on-off switch. Do I need to have a remote control as it's only going to go around a track & do I need a special track? or can I just get away with a motor (of which there seem to be many) & battery. Do different motors fit different trains. It's all getting rather complicated.

Can anyone help?

If you've actually bought an Emerald Night I'm a bit confused as to why you feel the need to ask. It's very thoroughly explained in the building instructions - which very clearly state what extra parts you need... or am I misunderstanding your question completely?

I haven't received it yet and as a woman I don't do instructions, I just want someone to tell me what parts I need to have a single speed train running round a single track, preferrably as cheap as possible. Especially at the mo as there is a deal this weekend on the lego site so if I wait for instructions I probably will miss the offer.

Thanks for your help.

Here is exactly what you are going to need:

Required:

  • Power Functions XL-Motor
  • Power Functions IR Speed Remote Control*
  • Power Functions IR Receiver
  • Power Functions Rechargeable Battery Box**
  • Power Functions Transformer 10VDC***
  • Track

*Note:

  • Remote requires 3 AAA batteries to operate

**Note: you can substitute this for

  • Power Functions AAA Battery Box

*** Note you can substitute this for

  • 6 AAA Batteries

Optional:

  • Power Functions Light

I would go with:-

Battery box 88000 (You will need AAA X 6 batteries as well.)

XL Motor 8882 This is the one that fits correctly in the EN.

IR Receiver 8884 This will work with the remote to control speed and direction.

Lights 8870 If you want it to have lights on the front.

Remote control 8879 which works with the IR receiver to control speed and direction. (Also needs 3 X AAA batteries.)

This is what I am using for my own version. I am not sure if it is possible to run it without the IR receiver and remote, it probably is but I imagin it would be going a little fast for a small circuit and may fly off the track on the sharp bends? I know I keep the speed on mine right down. The correct motor as in the instructions is the XL one. I am not sure if you can fit any smaller ones in there as to be honest I have not tired.

...as a woman I don't do instructions...

Period? That's hilarious! I thought it was men who didn't read the instructions - until something went wrong :D

Glad to see that you're being helped, though. If you haven't received the set yet it's quite understandable that you haven't read the instructions - regardless of your womanly preferences.

Edit: If you change your mind and want to see the instructions, you can click here. Flip to page 28.
