lightningtiger Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Now I decided to redesign the Ford ute the other day and this is the end result. Comments and suggestions as always very welcome. Avalonia Forever ! Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 I'm not a fan of the new six studs wide vehicles but this Ford looks like the original one! Very good work! Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 19, 2011 Author Posted November 19, 2011 Thanks 'LT12V', actually I was basing the design on a Holden ute, but Lego makes everything look the same....so I guess it could also be a Ford. I'm going to be designing a range of tray assemblies that can sit on the back of the chassis. Keep an eye out shortly for fresh pictures. Avalonia Forever ! Quote
bootz Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Took my advice, eh? It looks good. I like that you didn't fit it with a bed either. Us Americans are typically teased with the HSV Maloo and the FPV Pursuit and the like, so it's easy to forget that you guys use these as real trucks, not just muscle cars. That said, I agree with 12V, I'm not big on the 6 wide cars. 4 wide seems more natural to me, perhaps because it's what I grew up with. Maybe I'll turn the Bolt Interceptor into a ute, the girlfriend has work so I have a few free hours haha. Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 19, 2011 Author Posted November 19, 2011 Thanks 'bootz', now I might disappoint you now dude, I have fitted a tray on the back, but wait to I get some pictures up.....I consider it my best tradie vehicle ever ! Taking photos tomorrow, so keep an eye out then for those pic's ! Quote

There's something so cool about a large sedan turned into a mini dumptruck. Quote

Wait for the pictures everyone ! Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Neat Ute 'lt'. I think this design is the winner over the previous design. What kind of boxes do you have in mind for this? Quote
ER0L Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Absolutely great! Now this is a very clean and neat design. I don't care what type it looks like if the shape is as well balanced as this. Keep it up LT Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 21, 2011 Author Posted November 21, 2011 Thanks for the comments 'LGG' and now as I promised..... How did I do with the additions eh ? More things to come....keep an eye on the forum ! Avalonia Forever ! Quote
Xyver Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 That's nice work, the tradie tray on the back really sets it off. Its always weird seing a cab-chassis driving around, lots of possibilities with it now though. Any reason why you have the smaller wheels at the back? It sort of makes it look like a 4x4 at the front but a 4x2 at the back, though I'm assuming its just to make it easier for the tray. I attempted to make a Holden Ute the other day. Looks nice in the dark grey, but I don't have any doors/side panels of that colour so its not quite finished yet. Quote

Well, thank you for your comments 'Xyver', now the reason for the different wheels....exposed rear axle and the front wheel's actually fit flush to the sides of the wheel arches. I tried using the rear wheels for the front, and found the arches vs. wheels were way out and looked a bit silly, so we have what we now have ! Brick On Drive On ! Quote
Dr Rod Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Nice, I like the "naked" and final version. Does it have a spare tyre? Quote

Thanks 'Dr Rod', oh....spare tyre....not needed - he just goes to the local Ford Dealer - they have the Michelin Tyre agency for the region ! I'm planning an ETSA ute next.....let there be light ! jonwil Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Nice UTE, looks just like the sort of thing a plumber would use. Quote

Thanks 'jonwil', his name is Bob Hatfield, his parents ran a plumbing business and when he was born was given the name from a popular TV show plumber ! I'll try and start work on that second ute today (but I must setup and photograph my town again as I promised days ago ). Avalonia Forever ! Quote

Capn Frank Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 What a utiful coupé utility vehicle. I think the closest recent vehicle we Americans have to an UTE is the Subaru Baja, which makes sense. I think El Camino is the coolest looking ute ever. Lightningtiger, do you know if Australia had El Caminos? Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 21, 2011 Author Posted November 21, 2011 Thanks 'LT12V' and 'Phred' for your comments, now on the El Camino issue this might answer your question 'Phred'. General Motors manufactured and marketed "utility" coupe-pickup models in Australia as early as the mid 1930s. These Aussie "utes" typically combined the styling of a five-window coupe body with an integrated pickup box. GM's export organization offered a Chevrolet utility as late as 1952. In Mexico, the El Camino was sold as the Chevrolet Conquistador. In South Africa and later Middle East, rebadged Australian Holdens were sold, including the Holden Commodore utility as the Chevrolet El Camino and later the Chevrolet Lumina ute. GM Holden still produces a ute in Australia. A historic fact is the ute is an Australian invention, Ford though not GM at the suggestion of a farmer's wife to the Ford factory in Geelong, Victoria in the early 1930's. More ute's to come.....I feel a muster in the future of my town ! Quote
meyerc13 Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Very nice looking truck. I don't think I've seen that technique with the sideways door used before. Any idea if that is a 'legal' connection under LEGO's design rules, or does it put stress on the pieces? In one of your pictures, it almost looks like one of the bricks is being pushed away. Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 22, 2011 Author Posted November 22, 2011 Thanks 'meyerc13' for your comments, I'm using 1x1 tech bricks for the hinges - stud into one and 1.5 tech pin at the other. I'm still planning on the next ute, today I was working on a post station to join my standard Lego city sets. Keep watching ! Avalonia Forever ! Quote
bootz Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 (edited) Great looking rear on the ute. I think I may try a Falcon XB in this scale, even though it will look out of place in my town. Edited November 23, 2011 by bootz Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 23, 2011 Author Posted November 23, 2011 An XB ? You mean one of these...........might be hard to get the angles plus headlights right ? I wish you luck 'bootz', I'll try and start on ute number two today. Avalonia Forever ! Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 23, 2011 Author Posted November 23, 2011 Oh, I see....try this 'bootz'....a pair like this.... Though I think they might have been XC's. Quote
