Why doesn't Lego tap BSG for a license. Is there something about having other scifi themes? They have had Aliens, Dinos and what not, Is LEGO to be only exclusively SW? Even with one shots like a classic viper and a MK II or MK VII viper, the sets would undoubted do well. I miss the smaller one vehicle with two characters--pilot and ground crew guy w/accessories. LEGO could even do a large GALACTICA with a RAG TAG FLEET. Will LEGO ever pursue this license?

Probably not. You make an interesting point, though; while I've long argued vehicles aren't necessary for a successful series, TLG does tend to like vehicles for sets... and that's about ALL you'd get with BSG.

SW and the NASA Discovery series are the only licensed space themes they've done. As long as SW is successful, don't look for another licensed space theme.

BSG's time has come and gone, so there's not much reason for anyone to reach out for marketing on this. The only reason people have been clamoring for Lord of the Rings is because there's two new tightly related movies coming out.

Lastly, there is an existing thread for "dream licenses," this should be there, and you'll likely find a lot of BSG discussion there, although there's a lot to look through.

This was your first post, you should look around a little before starting new discussions.

Actually Fred, I did look around and did not see anything related to the BSG theme only thread. You shouldnt assume I didnt look. I know there are dream licenses, but my post specifically points to BSG and why, if for any reason, Lego doesnt pick up the license, possible contract violation with SW maybe? I dont know, so I figured I would ask. Obviously SW has done well for LEGO, Mega Bloks has Halo and is doing quite well, coming out with bigger sets and there are only video games to back them up. BSG has had a cult following since the 1970s when it came out. LEGO could do both TOS BSG and TNS BSG, allowing for fans from both camps to enjoy. One shots or limited sets would also be an interesting idea in investigate.

I understand folks not caring for a post on yet another BSG, but I did use eurobrick's search and after going thru about 5 pages worth of threads, I did not see any related to the info that I wanted. I dont like it when people repeat themes either, but usually if its a low post count, I let it slide, because really its no big deal. If you dont like my thread or my topic, then feel free to ignore it. Im a fan of Lego and BSG, heard this was a nice community. Figured I would start with something people know and enjoy.

I think a BSG license has two big strikes against it:

1) There is no new, current content. The show has been off the air for several years. TLC has typically tried to tie their licensed products with new movies. Star Wars sets initially came out along with "Phantom Menance," Indy sets came out along with "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," Pirates of the Caribbean sets came out along with "Fountain of Youth," and so forth. With no forthcoming BSG content (either movie or TV show), there's nothing to tie new products to.

2) The subject matter on BSG is inappropriate for TLC's target audience. BSG was a dark, gritty, and deeply cynical show. I can't imagine TLC making a set where Roslin airlocks a Cylon traitor, or where Colonel Tigh sends a suicide bomber to blow up a Cylon facility, or where Starbuck gets hammered and f-cks Apollo.

Even so ... a Lego Galactica would be awesome.

Oh, and welcome to Eurobricks!!

I'll just answer this because its a long time dream for me.

The MAIN reason for not doing a BSG license theme is because it is an adult show with adult themes and language (at least the newer version). TLG is a company that's main focus is children, and they avoid anything that may be inappropriate for children (that is one of the main reasons that they stayed away from realistic guns). If you have noticed, none of the licensed products have had a mature or R-rated relation. Actually, to be honest I am quite surprised that they agreed to do licenses for pg-13 films and material (My personal opinion is that it strongly had to do with the fact that the last Star Wars film was rated for a more adult audience and they were already deep into the license to let go at that point so they decided to give in).

Secondly, the old series is just that, too old. TLG tends to stick with licenses that are relevant currently, and BSG (even the new series) is not a relevant show.

On the other hand, with the new movie being made (hopefully it actually goes as planned and doesn't fall apart) BSG might once again be relevant. The problem still, is whether the new movie would be ok content wise for children. And secondly, TLG would probably not want to take a license for a single film, and looking at the TV series, the above problems come up again.

I'd personally LOVE to see it happen, but then again, I'd love to see TLG take on any other sci-fi space series, or even make up their own, that felt more realistic than most of their space themes.

On the bright side, there are still people out there making amazing creations on their own. My wish, that they put their stuff up on CUUSOO and win.

For example, the astounding creations here.

EDIT: Seems Joebot beat me to it  eh, I'll post this anyway. (Its different enough, right?)

As mentioned already, the first and foremost reason is that the TV show is "old". Any show or movie that isn't "current" is already old for making it a Lego theme. Star Wars is the exception, due to a massive amount of fans around the world (which actually even predates the second trilogy) that no other sci-fi franchise can compare with, perhaps with the exception of Star Trek.

I also agree that BSG is really not for children or even teenagers. Star Wars, Indiana Jones and LoTR are not for small children, but are fine for 12+ or even a little younger. And as much as I loved to watch the BSG series and appreciated its visuals, it's probably too much "realistic" (i.e. not fancy, not colourful) and too much "human" (no monsters except the centurions) for designing really attractive Lego sets.

I believe that rather than BSG, another sci-fi series I liked in the past would have made a much better Lego theme: Babylon 5. It had a few (but not too many) visually-compelling alien races to turn into minifigs, and many spaceships were fancy and colourful enough. But it was made at least 10 years too early for Lego.

I agree with much of what has been said here, but as a side note, why isn't this in the Dream LEGO Licenses topic? If we had a separate topic for everything that would make a good theme, the forums would be swamped. I don't think things like this should get their own threads unless there's been some evidence that such a theme may be in the works.

Of course, if the topic diversified to discuss MOCs as well, instead of just an official theme, it'd be more palatable. That said, has anyone seen any good BSG MOCS?

I don't watch the show, but I did come across a pretty good Cylon Raider a few weeks ago:

This is by Mark Kelso, who also made the 231-stud-long Invisible Hand. I was impressed by how well the rounded shape of the Raider was achieved with SNOT.

From what I understood there's yet another BSG reboot in the works that presumably has no ties to the "classic"-Lorne-Greene-series or the (superior! scnr) SyFy-series (which is awesome! scnrII). If that turns out to be PG-13 or lower rated movie, we might get lucky. A nice Viper vs. Raider set? Appetising thought!

Until that day comes (or not) I'll be content watching all those sexy Viper models people come up with.

Be well all!
