I finished off my 1st MOC tank engine last night. Initially I had wanted to make a smaller engine but did not want to have a seperate wagon for the battery box. So I had to go with one of the larger express tank engines. Looking through my railway books at the pictures I choose the 326 Bessborough by DE Marsh of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway. The main reason for this was the short round pokey out boiler bit with the big blocky square bit that could be used to hide all the power functions gubbins.

Never having done a MOC train before and not being that into Technics as a child or AFOL, I was not that sure about the gearing. I decided to go with the basic gearing used on the Emerald Night but had to modify it a bit, moving it along one axle to give room to fit everything actually into the engine. I also had to hide the XL motor so it needed to be a 7 stud wide build to do that.

To start with all I had was a black and white photo of the engine in my book to work from and I copied it as best i could. However I do realise that I have made a few alterations and it is not an exact replica, but this is what it is based on. I have photographed it next to my Emerald Night. I have also had it running pulling my three passenger coaches around the track and it works just fine. I managed to fit lights in the front as well. Initially I was not sure of the colour for this engine, but decied to go with the dark green to match the EN. I later found out that in fact the original Bessborough was a kind of sick yellow colour and from what I see looked awful in that shade. (Good job I only had a black & white photo or I would have been put off.) Not sure what colour it was painted after the war, but dark green seems to have been a Southern Railway colour from what I can remember anyway. I got some gold letters from a shop in town for the LRTS, they are a little glittery but that is all I could find. I used the original engines no 326 as it inspired my MOC afterall so it seemed only right.

I've attached some photos.

Whilst in this thread perhaps some people with more experience and know-how could answer this following question for me? I had also looked building a 4-4-0 tender engine but for some reason I could not get just four of those large wheels to run properly, they kept locking. I had them off set correctly but they would not go more than two turns. I built them on a frame just to get the gearing right but could not see why? As soon as i added the other two and had six large wheels they ran perfectly. Suggestions as to why are welcome as I want to build this configuration in the future?

Nice MOC!

I've seen a similar problem when a friend tried to motorise a TS3 loco. It seemed to be something to do with friction in curves and removing the drive bands from one side fixed it.
