Hobbes Posted September 19, 2006 Author Posted September 19, 2006 It is not the first time that the minifigs can't go to the uper level, just look the new hospital! And how do they do to enter in cars without doors, and... It is that the lego spirit, not preftect but so sweet! I agree with the upper levels. But I don't like the missing doors. Heck, doors were already here in the early 1980s! So, bring 'em back! Quote
gylman Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 Incredibly, for an old fart, I like the modern airport building in 7894 the best. Open concept, lots of glass, and I love that revolving door. However, the stupid airplane is utterly useless, fit only for the parts bin, and so overall the set itself gives far less play and value for hte money compared to the classic century skyway, which I voted for. I would happily buy several copies of the 7894 set without the airplane, priced at some fair cost. Quote
Hobbes Posted September 19, 2006 Author Posted September 19, 2006 I would happily buy several copies of the 7894 set without the airplane, priced at some fair cost. My thoughts exactly. The other day at TRU I saw Playmobil's airport. They use the modular approach and sell seperate smaller sets: Playmobil Airport Theme In the end an airport with one main building, a tower and a plane is more expensive than a one-set airport, but hat way gives you a lot more flexibility for a big airport. LEGO it would be even more modular. Kinda ironic Playmobil uses that concept... Quote
Hobbes Posted September 21, 2006 Author Posted September 21, 2006 Two weeks have passed and EB's citizens have decided. And with 18 votes over 9 votes it was a clear decision. I hereby declare EB's favorite airport: 6597 Century Skyway / 10159 LEGO City Airport I wouldn't really call it a classic set since I consider the classic lines to be 1980s lines but it has the "classic spirit". 6392, a true classic, came in second with 9 votes, 6396 and 7894 both received 3 votes each. Another defeat for the new sets. Topic unpinned. Voting's still possible but won't be taken into account anymore. Quote
alex54 Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 another good EB choice! And the new sets always the last Quote
WhiteFang Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 This is a poll that was done 2 years ago. Well, I have dug out one of the interesting polls that was done in Eurobricks. Actually, I was doing a search on 10159 LEGO City Airport review. Then, I bumped into this poll. I am thinking of getting a MISB set of this airport. Because I am not very happy with the current 7894 Airport due to the lack of tarmac, airstrip, helicopter, mini-figs and etc. I know that Eurobricks had concluded a winner. Clearly, my vote went to 6597 Century Skyway / 10159 LEGO City Airport. How about our new members? What do they think about this poll? Quote
Klaus-Dieter Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 (edited) That's a very interesting poll, Hobbes! I voted for 6597 Century Skyway/10159 LEGO City Airport because it's simply  . I really like this big freight helicopter with the forklift, the plane with the "suitcases car " and the gangway, the garage with rolling gates and the little tank truck and the great interior! The two older airports were nice, too , but the interiors were very little and untenanted . Klaus-Dieter Edited June 2, 2008 by Klaus-Dieter Quote
Lockt Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 My Lego City was missing an airport for a very long time. Ok, I have the airplane of the 80s, I have helicopters from the 80/90s but never a place for them to get to (except the emergency helicopters with landing platforms on police stations, hospitals and fire brigade/ships). I am truly sorry I missed the airfields in my 'dark years' with the landing strips. So I stettled with the latest airport: 7894. The building is nice in my city, even combined with a lot of classic buildings. In its height its just as out of scale as the creator houses, hospital and numerous other new buildings are. For me that building blends in nicely. Like stated before, the airplane is the real trouble. Since it has the looks of a small commercial jet, it is to much in scale with real life instead of the rest of lego town. To bad you need its size to make it fit on the passenger bridge to enter the plane. My old 80s planes doesnt fit on that one. Overall I dont think the set is terrible and the building fits in nicely... Still, back to the poll, I drewl when I see the winner of this poll: 6597 Century Skyway/10159 LEGO City Airport. I think on one day I will add this one to my collection since it has everything an airport needs, especially the landing strip! Quote
Adam Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Tough choice. They all look cool, but I had to vote for #4 because it has THE BEST plane. Unfortunately, the airport itself isn't the best one. Quote
The Cobra Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I never owned any of these sets. My pick is 6597 Century Skyway. I don't like the big cargo copter, but everything else is great. Quote
Stash2Sixx Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I voted for 6392. I remember actually going to TRU to buy this set because it was the first large scale set I ever bought with my own money. Ah, memories! Quote
commanderbly42 Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 (edited) What about that Jack Stone set, 4620 A.I.R. Operations H.Q.? While not a scratch on the other four, I think that it at least deserves a mention. Anyhow, I think that 6597 Century Skyway is my favourite and that is the one that I voted for. CP5670 Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 (edited) I added another vote for the Century Skyway. It does everything pretty well and has a large variety of other vehicles in addition to the plane. I got the original when it came out and picked up the 10159 legend recently as well. (although I don't know why they changed one of the baseplates to that odd looking one, as it's not used in any other set) That being said, I have always found all of the official airports to be somewhat lacking due to their buildings. The buildings have always been too small even by Lego standards, even though all the sets came with excellent planes and other vehicles. The recent 7894 one continues this theme. Even when I was younger, I remember modifying the Century Skyway building to make it bigger numerous times over the years. Edited June 3, 2008 by CP5670 Quote
M'Kyuun Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 I always wanted the Century Skyway airport as a kid, but my LEGO acquisition was limited to birthdays and Christmas, so I had to pick and choose, and Space always won. So when this saw re-release, I snapped one up, and I have to say it's a great set with lots of realistic features. The new City airport was kinda disappointing, but then I think the building was sacrificed to put the new plane in there, since the large plane parts are more expensive to produce. Personally, I like the new bigger, more realistic planes, as I always thought the 4 wide planes, cars, and trucks were a bit too small. Still, I think the new airport would have been better served by including a small plane, helicopter, a few more play features, and base plates, with the large passenger planes sold separately, but easily integratable. This way, everyone would be happy, as long as the new base plates were made to accommodate the larger planes, and additional plates could be bought off SAH to expand the runway as necessary. Just had a thought (it happens occasionally): the new plates could also be made to double as City road plates that could accomodate 8 wide vehicles, with sticker sheets or a clever paint job to turn it into a 4-laner for 4-wide vehicles.
